Master the Dyneema Eye Splice with a Thimble
If the eye in your dyneema splice is going to have a lot of friction you can always add a thimble to help strengthen the eye.
There are two ways for you master the eye splice with a thimble depending if one end of your dyneema is fix or not. Both splices work equally as well with the first splice being the easier of the two to master.
Inserting a Thimble into the eye of your splice is not required but a neat option to avoid wear and tear on the rope part of the splice.
If you want to give this a go but don't have the tools of the trade to give it a go yourself you can pick up everything you need with the product links below.

Fender Knots: Part 4 - Highwayman's Hitch
Hi there, i am thinking of replacing part of the standing rigging on my 22 foot sailing boat from stainless steel to dyneema. I was thinking of the 2 lowers and backstay. My question is, would those eye splices be strong enough for the job, please. Best regards Oz from England.
If you get the right diameter of dyneema it will be more than strong enough. In many case the rope can have a higher breaking load than traditional wire. I have a j109 which is 36 foot long and I use dyneema for my back stay. The J1019 has a mast head kite so the loads can be high. The only point to consider is that dyneema will stretch as the rope beds in. This is why many still choose metal rigging for the lowers. You could always tighten the splice if it did stretch
Excellent tutorial.
Thanks for stopping by. Glad you found it useful 👍
DO THIS: Fast forwards so you cant see.....
Now we’re is the fun in that, all you will end up seeing is the frayed ends in your sheets and halyards.
Just found your channel. Great footage of the 109! I'll be following. Of course you have to overtire the chute in time...which is a lot easier said than done when it's blowing like that! Greetings from the USA: czcams.com/video/47SrSghqHVg/video.htmlsi=3WOEhG5xvJ_ufLb4
Over trimming the main to offset the spin heeling the boat in that direction has saved us from death roll gybes many times on boats up to this size..seems about 40 ft loa. Also over trimming the chute helps too..which is just the opposite of what most people do…it is the symmetric chute that is overpowered and heels the boat to a point that the rudder loses control and the gybe occurs out of control. Over trimming it usually depowers it as well. It has to be done in time though
All good points, for symmetric kite over trimming is one of the best ways to avoid a death roll.
Never pour water into acid. But pour acid into water.
This is why comments are great. A couple of viewers picked this up, great advice and an enhancement to the published content 👍
BEST guidance tutorial that I've seen. Batter than mtg. Instructions!....(i've spliced parachute lines with small fids for 40+ years, but BIG Fids are a handful) THANK YOU for walking through the process.
Thanks for stopping by and for the fabulous feedback. Looks like this video will take your big FID work to the next level !!!!!
I did this once, don't ask me how I did it, but I did. You have to give up reasoning what's going on and just doggedly follow the video. Professional eye splicers will not do this with a rope that has been under stress it's just too tightly bound.
100% on the old rope, it make it really hard, even for those who have done it multiple time. Congratulations for doggedly following the video and glad that it helped you get their. Trust me when I say it gets easier the more you do it and understand how it all works !
Excellent
Glad you found our content valuable 👍

Good job wow, now i need a pump😊
Our old milking pump got there slowly. With a new one and a warmer environment you can make a big impact !
O.k.,now show me how the machine made do it.
Hmmm, interesting question which I don’t know the answer to. Looks like it is time for a research project.
why
Because it is cleaner and stronger than making a loop with a knot. Plus it looks cool 😎
Great instructional video but much too difficult for me.
Thanks for the feedback. If you ever get the urge to give it a go you know where to come to master it 👍
What is this sorcery?!
Sorcery in its purest form.
Will this work with Bungie rope?
I guess it would work as long as it is constructed in the same way. That is double braid. Further to that you need to be able to feed the braids in between on another while ch may be tricky if the inner core is 100% rubber
@@BottomUPBoats I really appreciate your help. Great video. I will see what I can find that's specific to Bungie rope.
I always wondered how they did that. 🙃👍
Glad we could help you understand how it is done !!!
I never realised this was such an asshole of a job. Thanks Linda for sorting out all my splicing needs
Sounds like Linda is a keeper as part of your crew if she has mastered this skill and keeps you right.
I have the Ashley book of knots, and I agree with him when he says, getting more elaborate than necessary or adding more than needed to any knot 🪢 usually ends up detracting from what you're trying to accomplish.
Hard to challenge or disagree with the author of the knot bible. On the flip side if does allow us to dream up more content 😌
Nice videos
Thanks for stopping bye and leaving some feedback. Glad you liked it 👍
I will never during the rest of my life do this. However, I gave a like just because it's so good to see an expert do what he does best and explain it so beautifully.
Wow, I hope the reason for not giving it a go is down to the fact that you will never have the need to put a neap loop into the end of of a length of Double Braid Rope.... If you ever need one then my advice is give it a go..... Thanks for leaving what now ranks as the nicest comment we have ever received at Bottom Up Boats !!!!!!!!
It seems like it would be less complicated, but clearly, that's not the case. I don't think I'd ever remember that method, which means I'd have to refer back to it every time I need to do an eye splice.
Nothing wrong with that, and one of the reasons I made the video in the first place :)
Hooray, back with more cup history! Cheers
Thanks for stopping by and the feedback. This update is getting a lot of love so will try not wait as long to be back with the next instalment !
Great explanation. Also explains why it was easier to develop rocket science than to sail to the moon. 👍
With clear instructions even the impossible is possible :)
- for an imprpmptu D-splicer I like to bend some medium steel wire - twist a handle onto the sharp ends - giving one of custom length any time I need one in the bush....
This is exactly how I made my first one. With that said we think it is hard to beat one of the current retail models that work a treat. D-Splicer amzn.to/3U1vK81

@@BenTrem42 always happy to hear our videos are helping people learn a new skill. The more you do it the easier it gets.
I was taught and therefore know that last knot as a "larks 'foot' not 'head'" as it shows the action of a birds foot grasping a stick.
Had not heard that one before, thanks for sharing !
An interesting take on the story, Sold on after the round the Island race to a British Aristo, She never came close to beating her main opponents again, trailing along in forth place time and time again. The local pilot who new the waters of the race like the back of his hand and in truth was the designer of the winning strategy, a cheat or not depending on your point of view, however the shoal channel used by America to significantly shorten the course was not an option for several of the other competitors. She continued to change hands and sails over the next few years without ever improving on her poor performances. The Lebrock the elderly racing yacht that escorted America into the Solent was deliberately chosen as she was not entered for the race and her performance against the top English yachts was well understood. Americas relatively poor performance against this Yacht prompted the Southampton based pilot to approach the America and explain the problem and offer a solution, for which he received a set of drawings from Steers and funds to build a half sized replica a crude oil painting of which can be seen in Carisbrooke Castle. The other replica almost twice the size was raced without success until wrecked on the Goodwins. America was sold back to the Confederacy at the start of the Civil war and ran guns past the Norths naval blockades until scuttled when she was raised by the North and turned over to a US admiral. There are some awesome black and white photo's of America taken in later years flying a huge suit of sails and curling water at her bow in the most impressive manner, this is the Image I like to hold in my head of this boat who's history is surrounded by controversy and suffered such a sad demise at the Hands of the US navy.
Hmmm 😢😢complicated
After a couple of practice runs it is easier than it looks.
Tank's verry interesting
Anytime. Thanks for stopping by and leaving some feedback.
There is another way using a large sailmakers needle. Probably too hard for landlubbers to master!
I would love to learn more no this method
Boring
But effective is you want to learn this new skill 🤔
Very interesting, but I'll just buy what spliced lines I need. Cool vid, though!
Where is the fun in that 😝 I am sure you would feel differently after competing your first home made one 👍
@@BottomUPBoats Yeah, true. If I needed many I'd take the time for sure. I can, however, easily splice ski rope 😎
@@Nitrox4me planning to do demo's in 3 and 5 strand rope which sailors use of docking lines. From memory I think they will be similar.
The last step is the hardest. It takes brute strength. A rubber mallet and a lot of cursing are helpful. It’s not accomplished in minutes, at least not by me!
If this was your first one well done. Cursing and a rubber mallet are great additions. I avoid the cursing to remain add friendly on CZcams 😜 The title was worded to hook you and make viewers believe they could give it a go. Even if it took you 3 hours that is still 180 minutes 🤔 Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience !!!!
I was taught the loop way as a kid but I understood later that was for old twisted type line…not braided like we have now
💯same story for me growing up hence the video 👍
My cousin was doing that at age 6. Now an old man, he is splicing giant wire ropes for his tugboats.
A different process for wire but still a great skill that gives the best results. I wish I had learnt how to do this at 6 years old !!!
@@BottomUPBoats My cousin could pull the cotter pins from his tricycle and take off the rear wheels when we were 3 years old. We are 73 now and I never caught up to him mechanically.
I do slings for the mechanics I work with. HD Mechanics. A lot of 3/4 ans 1 inch. At the last step I come out of the main line about 3 inches from the base of the loop/eye. I never take any of the ropes innards as you do and as I finish there are 3 layers of rope at that union. Far superior splice. Harder to do but these guys are animals with there slings. Setting a thimble is a good one to show as well.
Thanks for sharing I will check both of these out an schedule them for future release !!!!
@@BottomUPBoats Awesome. 1 inch dual braid is no slack dtuff and puting in a eye splice can often need a come along to get that last bit done but It really is worth it. 2 on a eye splice can hold a D8G thack frame. I have seen the line reduce itself down to a 7/16 th and not fail. Love that stuff eh.
Excellent idea to use the contrasting green coloured marker
:) setup all the lighting to record and started to find out that my red one had dried out. Sadly the kids only had green in the pencil cases :(
Thank you . I have actually made my own long reins for training my horse. So much better learning a new skill. Thanks again
Love it !!!! 100% agreed that learning new skills is what life is all about. Thanks to CZcams for creating a platform that makes anything possible !!
Yo. Wtf. I dont work with ropes anymore. But co2 and water hoses. Cant wait to try this tomorrow.
Hoses can have similar twist principles so may benefit from this. Interested to see how you get on
So the secret is magic!
Watch the video a dozen times and you too will be able to pull a Rabbit out of your hat and make your first splice
What is the strength compared to the rope itself?
It will be almost the same as the rope on it's own. This is one of the primary reasons for splicing as you only loose a few % points, unlike a knot like a bowline where the same loop will cost you 30 to 40% percent depending on how it is tied.
Try like 180 min?
180 mins is still minutes...... With a couple of test runs these can be completed in less than 20 minutes with the right tools and rope.
(Asking for a friend) if you need a loop, why not tie a figure-8 or overhand on a bite?
Knots reduce the breaking strain of the line and can create bumps which sheet and halyards can get caught on when the are in use on your boat. The splice maintains the breaking strain of the rope and is neater.... Plus it looks cook :)
@BottomUPBoats makes sense. Thanks for sharing this & I also enjoyed your soft shackle video 📹.

I've seen a couple videos on this, but your description is fantastic. Thank you. Can you recommend a splice tool for 5/8" line? I'll probably grab a set of the Selma/RONSTAN, but it says it only goes up to 9/16". I kinda think that 5/8 must be close enough for this work, but curious what you would suggest?
I have a set of these and thing they will cover the rope size you are going for. There is always variation I the spacing between the core and the cover. Depending on this you often need to go up or down a size. If you purchase from my links and get stuck you can always make a home made D-Splicer from an old bit of wire. Don’t think it will come to that, if it does drop us a line and we can talk you through how to do it 👍
