  • It was 5 years after the 1871 America's before the next instalment was ready to roll, Major Charles Gifford and his yacht The Countess of Dufferin would challenge on behalf of The Royal Canadian Yacht Club.
The 1876 Cup was another of firsts, it was :-
    - The first challenge from Canada
    - The first time there was a single defender
    - The first cup where races were started under sail.
For the challenger sadly the winning streak of the New York Yacht Club continued with another white wash for the visiting boat. John S Dickerson and his all concurring yacht Madeleine narrowly defeated the challenger in the first race before destroying them by over 20 minutes in the second race.
Madeleine showed her class from start to finishes of the 1876 America's Cup leading from start to finish in both races. Solid crew work and and a well prepared yacht allowed her to easily dispatch the Canadian Challenger.
AC4 was the third defence of the cup by the New York Yacht club, in 25 years after travelling to the UK to win the first match the US have continued to cement themselves as the leader in the sport of international yacht racing.
