J109 tight reaching with Code Zero

  • It is always fun to deploy a new sail for the first time, nothing can replace the sound of the fist flap before you sheet it in and get going. The only down side is that those flaps are the start of the process which knocks it out of shape and will ultimately lead to you needing a new one at some point in the future.
We don't expect the new Code Zero for our J109 to be deployed many times, when it does we should be lightening fast. This could give us the best of both worlds, a sail that will last for many years that stays fast when we do use it.
We are looking forward to seeing how the structured luff technology from Doyle sails works on the J109 Code Zero, with the bob stay fitted to the bow sprit we should be able to crank on the pressure on the luff which should give us both speed and hight for the those tight reaching legs.
The bottom up boats Redline racing team is working hard to get to grips with the new J109 and hopes you are enjoying the footage we are sharing as we learn along the way. We hope to bring you more footage of the Code Zero in race trim our initial play tells us we should be lightening quick when we get to use this sail in anger....

With this sail we can get tight as 80/90 TWA in 8 knots of wind even slightly higher TWA with an inhaul handibilly. Above 12knots you need to be a lot lower, when the pressure is consistently above 12 it s better to switch to a reaching kite.

@@BottomUPBoats Interesting - I sail Sabre 28 using code zero with torsion cable as a jib. I can get as close as 60.

We can get a little higher in less than 8 knots, 60 would be a push for us. All depends on the cut of the sail and how fine the entry is.

@@BottomUPBoats 60 is an absolute max for me, and not efficient.

@@bessarion1771 sounds like we are not too far off the mark.

Too many people standing up and weight not centralized. 😮

True if we were racing. This was the first time we put this sail up. Lots of walking about to look at things and figure out the setup.
