    Hello Laurel, lovely garden, thank you for sharing. Just wondering, do you lay a landscape fabric down first before you mulch?

    • @laurelrosegardens6454
      @laurelrosegardens6454 Před 2 hodinami

      Thank you! No, I don't use any landscape fabric in my gardens, only compost and mulch. Landscape fabric is not very healthy for soil or plants so I avoid it entirely.

    I’m a pot of plants person as well. I like how versatile it is. I can change up my combinations and displays thru out the growing season. Most of mine have a single variety in it with 2-3 plants that are the same. This gives me a big bold statement of foliage and /or colour to play with.

    Hi! I recently found your channel and I love your videos! I have a question for you about the overwintering - do you let the frost get them outside before moving them into the garage or do they harden off okay inside?

    • @laurelrosegardens6454
      @laurelrosegardens6454 Před 2 dny

      Thank you! It depends on how much time/energy I have to get things done around hard frost time. I usually leave them out until they start going dormant. Sometimes I get them in the shed before they die back all the way and sometimes I can't get to it until later. If there is risk of temps getting below 15 degrees or so I do try to get them in the shed to keep the roots safe. They can probably take much lower temps but I prefer not to risk it.

      Thank you! So far the beetles have not attacked either of those plants but you never know. It seems like they pick a different favorite to swarm every year. I have heard they release something like pheromones when they find something they like and that attracts more beetles to the plant. I don't plant sunpatiens anymore because they ALWAYS go after those.

  • @sarahperryman4499
    @sarahperryman4499 Před 8 dny

    Regarding your echinacea, examine for mites vs aster yellow. It's possible you have mites and do not need to remove the entire plant. They look similar, but I am reading a better sign for aster yellows is yellowing and browning of the foliage / stem, not just relying on visual changes to the blooms only to make the diagnosis. I believe if it is mites then you only need to remove the bloom, not the entire plant.

    • @laurelrosegardens6454
      @laurelrosegardens6454 Před 8 dny

      I have battled mites on that patch of echinacea before and treated them by continuous deadheading of affected blooms. I also lost one of the original plants to aster yellows a few years back. It was stunted and deformed while the others grew well so I pulled it out. The green blown-out look of the seed head is what worries me on that flower. Those plants self-seed prolifically and there are lots of new seedlings coming up constantly so I decided to pull it out just to be safe. I can't even tell one is missing now! 🙂

      That is Kintzley's Ghost Honeysuckle and I planted it in 2019. It got big very fast. For 2 years I had a hanging basket on the laundry pole it is climbing but the 3rd year the basket got engulfed. I think any honeysuckle can get aphids but I suspect mine was stessed after several years of drought. The aphids don't seem as bad this year so I'm hopeful I can get rid of them. Bobo is a great plant and I've been very impressed by Opening Act so far! Thanks for watching, I appreciate it! 😊

    Beautiful plant selections and containers, they are the bees knees. We have four flowerbeds, fifty two containers of perennials in the front garden and six containers of African daisies on the front windowsills. My wife has no interest in gardening and tells me it looks like a mini garden centre. I feed the containers once a week with tomato feed and use a watering can to water them. I mulch the flowerbeds in spring with homemade compost and add a handful of fish blood and bone to each plant. We have had a rainy summer so far this year and I have only had to water the flowerbeds with a watering can three times this summer.

    Lol, yes, needed to fertilize earlier when the rains wouldn’t quit. I switched to granular and as soon as it dried up a bit I gave them a liquid boost. Right now, the mosquitoes are so bad near any vegetation I can’t do anything. Planted most of fall garden and basically threw the seeds when it got so intolerable. I am hearing more vids mentioning mosquitoes, but here Z5a, WI there is no way anyone could be out there near vegetation without a hazmat suit on. It’s depressing and I’m on the edge with trying a fog spray. We have 2 bug zappers on 24/7 that we clean daily. I have hostas that were here over a decade ago and it’s been the worst time to remove as it keeps popping up even into the grass. It is a basic green with lavender flowers. The only way I can enjoy my flowers is through pictures. Thx for the tour, your flowers look very nice.

      Ugh the mosquitoes are epic this year. The extremely mild winter we had started increasing their numbers then the cool and rainy spring and summer has caused a nightmare population boom. I think I'll end up buying a bug suit to survive. I want to enjoy the cool evenings outside still! My sister in Texas says people think mosquitos are bad down there but when she comes up here they're 10 times worse. Aren't we lucky!
