  • A quick inventory of my plants for 2024. Some have made it into the garden already and some new ones have come home with me.

What a beautiful haul! I am always so impressed with folks who can over winter or start seeds.
I looked at a couple of places for a wicked witch coleus, but couldn't find one. So, i had to settle for a "dipped in wine". I think I need to try and snag one earlier next year.

Yeah I start my shopping early for that very reason. Plants sell out fast especially when it's an early, warm spring. Dipped in Wine is a great coleus too!

I love what you are doing. Can't wait to see it all plated up. I'm in your area. How do you know when Gerten's has a clearance sale?

Thanks! Gerten's has a clearance section all season in the back corner past the evergreens. It can be hit or miss but often I find at least one good plant to take home. Some plants are stressed or misshapen, some are mislabeled or missing tags, but often there are perfect healthy plants out there too. Maybe they are just overstock or discontinued? I haven't seen anything suffering from disease or insects, though. They must dispose of those.
For annuals I order wholesale in January through my uncle. He has a Gerten's connection so I'm lucky. They do occasional sales during the season but nothing huge. Sign up for their rewards program and they'll mail you coupons and you earn points you can redeem.

@@laurelrosegardens6454 Thanks for the tip. I never knew there was a clearance section back there. I will be visiting that soon! I am a member of the rewards program so I do get the coupons and some discounts. Thanks.

Since my last reply I went to Gerten's and found the clearance section. They didn't have anything I needed but it is good to know it is there. After that I stopped at Lowes to check out their clearance section. They had many plants but the real treasure was in the dumpster! I saw several 2.5 qt containers of coleus $8.48 each and they were in good condition. I asked if I could have them and she said normally they don't give them away but that she wouldn't stop me. So I have 4 new 2.5 qt coleus - for free!

Oh dang, I've never checked the dumpster at Lowe's! That's a bummer they would throw away good plants like that. But score for you!

What soil do you start your seeds in?

My favorite seed starting mix is by Coast of Maine but I've used others that are good too. Burpee and Black Gold among them. Often I mix it with regular potting soil to make it go further and just pick out any larger sticks or chunks.
