Uncovering The Cycle: IAPMD's Interview with Shalene Gupta
"Most days, Shalene Gupta was the person she’d always aspired to be. She was hardworking, excelled at work, and had a long-term boyfriend who she desperately loved.
Then, every month like clockwork, it all came crashing down..."
In her groundbreaking new book, The Cycle, Shalene shares her personal journey with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, and her simultaneous quest to understand the collective pain of those who suffer and the societal forces at play.
In this FREE webinar, Shalene sits down with IAPMD to discuss her experiences researching and writing The Cycle, as well as navigating her health and relationships with PMDD. We'll chat about the writing process, turning pain into action, and lessons learned along the way.

ABOUT THE CYCLE
"The Cycle uncovers a hidden epidemic, delivering the definitive portrait of a widespread chronic illness most people haven’t even heard of. From a historical overview of feminist debates, to on-the-ground interviews and a searing critique of menstrual stigma, Shalene Gupta lays out how disregard for this disorder has left too many people scrambling for appropriate healthcare. Deeply researched, movingly intimate, and refreshingly hopeful, this book is essential reading for any curious reader, especially those navigating a world ill-equipped to support their health."

My wife has PMDD. She self diagnosed realising it was cyclical, discovered that other women suffer with it, and takes Quetiapine on the really bad days. Day 10 before her period is when it kicks in and in the 2 to 3 days leading up to her period it can get extreme - hallucinations, psychosis, suicidal ideation, extreme paranoid and suspicion. When she's in the down phase she exercises far too much, won't eat, loes weight, becomes very masculine, dominant. For years i thought she had Borderline personality disorder - but it cycled and didn't fit. She was diagnosed bipolar but again it's cyclical. Antidepressants are horrible for her - they put her in an emotional straightjacket. I listened to a podcast by Andrew Huberman and decided to try her on Magnesium Threonate, L-Theanine, Apigenin. This has had a MASSIVE effect. It's not perfect, it really has a lot to do with how much isn't dealt with in her life in the pre ovulation period of her cycle. But the supplements have severely lessened her symptoms, and made it much easier for her to not listen to the negative thoughts. I'm a member of a 12 step fellowship - I'm no Saint and put her through a lot of hell. She's working the Steps now with a sponsor and this is dealing with the comorbid aspects. I'm going to try 5-HTP with her and see if this could be another adjunct to her treatment. I thank the Universe that PMDD is again being recognised after being driven out of western medicine for 100 years, and that we have brave people standing up against stigma and bullying, willing to admit that PMDD is REAL and debilitating to those women who suffer as my wife has. I'm so thankful that I have been shown ways to help her. I have the woman i love with all my heart back. Yes it's hard. But i know what's going on now, i know it's not my fault, i know how it works in her, and I've fallen more in love with her because of it. Thank you for this video - i got a lot of good information from it. Please don't stop what you are doing.

I don't know if there are studies to support this, but my personal anecdote: I have found that taking calcium, magnesium, and the b vitamins help immensely with the irritability, rage, sensitivity, and panic/anxiety. I didn't notice a change with the calcium/magnesium until I had taken it consistently for a month, but the b vitamins work within 24 hours of taking them. This, again, is just my personal experience after my physician recommended taking Optivite PMT. I am careful not to take over the recommended amounts, but I have found it cheaper to buy just those vitamins than the Optivite PMT, plus the Optivite PMT seemed to make me too keyed up.

What a difficult but important speech! Thank you! I'm so sorry you've been through it. It's such a relief to know it isn't me. I've been trying to take control of it, my therapy sessions help all the days except those 4-6 prementrual days. On those days it's like it isn't me, I am extremely fatigued, hypersensitive, depressed, I can't speak. I understand tomorrow is the next day, it always passes, but sometimes it's really unbearable, it's a torture. When I try to explain how I feel, I don't know how to do it, because ithose symptoms don't sound serious or as torturing as they feel. Yet there is hope.

Thank you for helping me not feel alone with this. Every month I start panicking when I feel the PMDD coming on because I’m terrified of my own thoughts and fear the overwhelming dread building. It’s as though I’m not myself and I can’t control what comes over me. I just want to be able to sleep until it’s over. I’m ashamed and hope no one sees me during this time. I don’t want my daughter to remember me as this humiliating person that takes me over one week each month. This suddenly started as I became perimenopausal and I continue to struggle every month to figure out how to make this stop. I don’t feel like anyone understands how crazy and mentally I’ll I feel when I try to explain. I can’t believe how little this is spoke about. So thank you for going n youtube with your story and thank you for saying just wait one more day because you are right, it usually does pass. We just need someone to believe us with a hug and tell us to hold on, it WILL be ok.❤️
