Don't Kill Your Friends On The First Day Skiing - Walk the Walk stories ep. 3 - Lyngen
Stortinden, Lyngen Alps, Northern Norway. An absolutely iconic peak, and one of the first mountains that catches ones eyes upon arrival in this majestic chain of mountains.
When Lovisa and Ebba visited in the middle of April, this region was hit by a strong high pressure, with high temperatures and quickly melting snow, making finding good skiing quite the challenge. On the first day of the trip, the crew went for the biggest mission they could find in search of powder, but it wouldn't come without its obstacles, like making some of the most exposed turns of the winter above the thousand-meter Stortinden North face.
Filming by Sofia and Jacob Wester, additional footage by Lovisa Rosengren and Emil Granöö

Episode 4 of Parts Of Us was in a way not really meant to happen. After a couple of wild weeks in Norway, with steep and gnarly descents all over the Jostedalen region, it was time to take a breather. AROUND THE BEND - SURF AND SKI IN NORWAY
Whats shown on this video goes against all basic avalanche security notions and guidelines. Everybody is free to do what they want but if you are a public characther with a big fanbase there is some responsibility coming along with it. Comparing this tipe of risk to surfing is not accurate, since very very few people with low skills would ever go int 15 ft surf, because theid got scared right from the beach. Avalanches are a different thing since many intermediate to advance skiers could get away skiing slopes that could kill the should an avalanche trigger. The problem with avalanche risk is that it is way more deceiving than others, and I think we should help people understand this.
And someone who has been involved in at least a dozen avalanches, I find that people love to play the blame game and call people stupid etc etc. At the end of the day it's your choice with your life. If you do that a slope had a 1% chance that avalanche and if an avalanche you had a 1% chance of dying would you ski the slope? What if it was 2% what if it was 5% what if was point 5%. The art of Snow science is guessing what are the chances that this rips and then you as a person have to decide whether it's worth skiing that slope. Also if he's been a pro skier for multiple decades and made only one mistake I'd say is track records pretty good

Nice! Hopefully I can make it back to Lyngen soon aswell... Just love it up north! How do your legs cope with skating wide skis? My legs are completely toast after skating with my 108s for a few meters when i didn't have enough speed for a short uphill ^^
Haha, yeah, its not optimal, i dont mind it if the snow is form enough though. On this day we skated back in the icy lake below with a strong tailwind so it was actually not a biggie at all :)

The last day looked amazing!
You have to risk it to get the biscuit. Being a skydiver, motocross rider and pilot it only gets fun when there’s risk.
Look out for the detail…. When the snow condition change was recognised what was he meant to do? Stop… traverse across away from location??? Isn’t it to late by that point. Slufff could take you out if your not bias to left or right.
This must have been a life changing experience.
Great!
Your ego is bigger than all those faces combined lmfao
The ego is an illusion, Denny. We're all only random collections of thoughts and emotions, different from day to day, bundled together into a story we tell ourselves about what we are in order to navigate the world.
29:19 Don't Eat the Yellow Snow
Dont do it
Avalanches do not care about your skill level. Bad video.
inanimate objects such as moving piles of snow don't care about anything, sir.
Close to landing on a rock? Is it just the angle?
Haha yeah, the plan was actually to hit ut much smaller and to the skiers right but i think i was so busy thinking about the lower part of the run i kind of blacked out in the first few seconds 😅
The lesson that you should take is, that you‘re actively ignoring avy-risk-science and that riding with that kind of risk is on the deadly edge. I think you‘re addicted by the rush and the kick. It‘s still your decision, but you have to clearify under every video, that you‘re willing to risk your life for the rush and the shot.
wouldnt that be something, every video starts with a disclaimer "I am willing to risk my life for these shots". I think you're onto something, might drive more clicks.
@@JacobWesterSki I don‘t see your point, that would only be so, if you put it directly on the thumbnail, which you are doing. A small disclaimer, that you aren‘t sticking to general avalanche-risk management to protect young shredders of doing the same wouldnt‘d be so bad
Skipping the avalanche-talk; can we talk about the music at 4:30? Love, love, love it! 💗 What song is it?? Where can I listen?
Shoulda Shazam'ed right away: Den Minsta Av Segrar (Crussen remix) 🎵
Its a good one! I recommend listening to the original by 1900, and also all their other stuff which is equally amazing!
Wow Jacob and Sofia, this was an amazing film. I see Niko has been inspiring some others with his eco-friendly approach to skiing. I think it makes the films just that more amazing seeing the process of the bootpacking to and from the mountains. The shots at 12:34 and on were too good, the avalanche just dumping over the features with those insane airs out of the lines.
Thank you for your kind words! :)
It warms my heart knowing that people are still out there earning their turns. 👍 Props!!!
Thank you!
@@JacobWesterSki 🤘for what it's worth my local ski area is in a national park and back in my day you could buy a single ride lift ticket for five bucks and take a wild ride down the backside of the mountain they cut for the world cup back in the thirties( I'm sure you still can, but not for five bucks). The front side is tiny it's the most east coast mountain in the whole Sierra Nevada. Guess my mountian? Also it's a national park so you can show up and hike it and they can't say shit cause you own it.
Good stuff, that is a lot of switchbacks

Fantastic review!
Great video! Was surprised at how far away Sofia stayed to shoot it. Somehow would have expected her to stay closer to the face. And don't know how she does nothing for 4,5 h without just sleeping (I would then just oversleep and miss the shot ^^). When ski touring in Lyngen, the group wanted to do an additional face in the light. But my fitness in general is pretty bad. So after the first 1200m and 400m descent i let them go since they returned the same way around. I brought my DSLR with a 28-300mm lens and just did some pictures of Zastrugis and snow being blown across them etc. until they reached the still lit part of that face. So i photographed them. One of those photos is still hanging on my wall... So there I only had to wait for ~1h before getting to shoot them. But 4.5h - no chance... Short side note: Do you use the same edit across different platforms and different uses? Just thought that if you place the recommended video in the end card always in the bottom left corner, that the sponsor logo probably should be moved up a bit for the youtube videos. This might mean that you need to make 2 different versions if you use those for other purposes aswell.
Thank you! Sofia usually comes with us a lot closer to the line or even up the opposite side of the valley to get a better view, but in this case the valley was so tight and the sides so steep, that had she been any closer we wouldn't have been able to talk on the radio due to the cliff being in the way. I agree that so many hours just waiting is pretty wild, and i'm always impressed by her patience, haha! thanks for that sidenote, I changed the end screen :)
@@JacobWesterSki ok, that makes sense. Didn't think about the radio.
fantastic job capturing the moment, sofia!

Inspired by the best 👊🏼🥳
I lost a great friend last year in a slide. He was on guided cat trip and the guide took them to part of the mountain that was unsafe. Things can change quickly up there.
So sorry to hear about it. Even with a guide youre never safe out there.
Did you maniacs just ski a boulder field? For real?
If you have to you have to 🤷🏼
@JacobWesterSki you skied the rocks like you were ballroom dancing. Do you even take your skis off? Or can you do everything in them? I wanna see you do video of you guys in your skis all day doing normal stuff. 😆
Sometimes you do have to take them off yes, but most of the time keeping them on equals less work. As long as there’s a bit of snow on top of the rocks you can kind of wiggle your way down!
Cool video! never mind the haters, you’re not saying everyone should live like you, and I think explaining and taking lessons from what happened and sharing that is super valuable. Totally unrelated questions, what Radio do you use? Doesn’t look like the classical BCA? Also what are your shoes? Cheers
Thank you! We use Topcom radios, a lot cheaper than the BCAs and they work super well!
Shoes as in ski boots? Rossignol AllTracks!
@@JacobWesterSki Yeah ski boots sorry! In french we say shoes :D. Merci!
THAT is the 'B' footage 😆😆 incredible
Amazing
In my opinion, you make your own choices and decide your risk tolerance. And that’s all. Obviously, you pay your bill if things don’t go as planned, but it’s just a part of the game. Otherwise, don’t you make snow testing or just don’t show them in your videos?.
I agree! Of course we test the snow by digging pits and spotting weak layers. I haven’t included the process in my videos simply because we’re not trained professionals (not ski guides), and that kind of info can be found on many other channels made by the proper pros!
I do feel you’re glamorizing avalanches to a degree. But you don’t seem to really deny that. The footage is very impressive and I think people like you that push these limits and document it well could push snow science forward. Do you think “surviving” will continue to push your risk tolerance? Ever see you feeling that your luck has run out and dialing it back? If you do it long enough you’ll eventually have a life altering or ending event, which you seem fine with.
Not fine with it at all. What this video doesnt show is the many times we do turn around too. It happens a lot, and i constantly go through the worst possible scenarios in my head. Made it so far (knock on wood), so hopefully doing something right?
Really great video Jacob!
Thank you Lucas!
