NOUVELLES VUES - Jacob Wester Skiing the Steepest Lines in Sweden

- Riksgränsen is a small Swedish ski resort right on the border of Norway, in the far north of the country. A mythical place, forever immortalized in the history books of freeskiing - many stories have been written, filmed and photographed here, aiming to capture the very soul of this wild lifestyle.
For many years, Jacob has made a pilgrimage here in the spring, to take advantage of the many hours of light, culminating in the end of May with a never-setting sun, allowing for some truly unique skiing opportunities. While the playful ski resort has been the perfect place to build jumps and take laps with friends on the ski lifts, over the years the neighbouring peaks and their steep freeride lines have been calling for attention. With steep faces in every direction, many above serious exposure, these ideas have remained dreams, until the spring of 2021, when an exceptional window of opportunity arrived. For a few weeks, the area was blessed with some of the best freeride conditions in modern times, and after thinking about these distant walls for so long, it was finally time to have a closer look.
Equipped with a tent, some food, and a toboggan full of camera gear, Jacob and his wife, Sofia, set out on a series of camping missions closer to these looming peaks. Carefully balancing the line between an obsession with the goal, and the well-founded fear of pushing it too far, the two documented a truly unique experience. What waited in these valleys surpassed even their wildest fantasies about what serious freeride skiing in Sweden could be.

I've seen productions like this in the past; but made with a pretty big crew, helicopters for the aerial view and for the lift-ups, lots of money in the budget. And then I see Nouvelles Vues, amazing production, made by a young couple who went on a winter camping trip only by themselves. Big mountain lines approached in a ski mountaineering style and filmed with their own camera gear. Amazing job, guys! Chapeau!

Good looking lines! You seemed to share at least one with Antti Autti's latest episode where he was at the same area. Personally been more on Narvik region, but cool to see there's still alot to do around rigsgränsen as well. So far we've done just few from the road.
Yes, good eye, Antti and Tom revisited the big spine just a few days after we shot this. They did get it in better snow though so I am a bit jealous :)

Thank you Mattia! Yes, I was alone on most of them except the smaller zone where we had a crew out. Was also joined on the big spine by swiss freestyle skier Valentin Morel. He has a shot of it in the new Harlaut Apparel video, pretty impressive for his first big line!

True, low above sea level, but several of the lines are still a 1km vert ascent :)
En av de få positiva sakerna med Covid är att man fått se mer filmer från våra svenska berg och även själv prioriterat att göra några av de där åken man alltid pratat om men inte kommit sig för eftersom det alltid fanns något annat runt hörnet som lockade mer . I vilket fall, underbar film, fint filmat, grym åkning, och den första skidfilm jag sett med Kite som musik, strålande. Var ni på konserten på Operan?
Det gäller att se det från den ljusa sidan helt enkelt :)
