How Emily transformed her sleep by accepting insomnia & committing to meaningful daily actions (#60)
Ready to get your life back from insomnia? Learn more about my sleep coaching programs at insomniacoach.com
Emily’s insomnia struggle began around four months after the birth of her baby. Even though her daughter was sleeping well, Emily was finding it really difficult to fall asleep. She started to get nervous and anxious as her level of exhaustion intensified.
When the medication prescribed by her doctor didn’t work, Emily started to get really concerned. She started researching solutions but found that the more she tried to fix her sleep, the more difficult it became and the more stressful things got.
Emily’s anxiety intensified to the point where the arrival of bedtime would lead to a racing heart and a sense of panic. It felt like her body was preparing for a marathon while she wanted to get a good night of sleep so she could be the mother she wanted to be for her daughter.
Emily’s transformation began when she changed her approach to sleep and her response to insomnia.
She reduced the amount of time she allotted for sleep to more closely match the amount of sleep she was getting on an average night. She started to do something more pleasant whenever she found herself struggling with being awake at night.
She stopped calculating the amount of sleep she was getting each night and she began to look at sleep with less judgement and more neutrality.
Instead of trying to fight or avoid her racing heart and the anxiety, she surrendered to them - she acknowledged their presence and allowed them to exist.
And, she committed to doing things that mattered, even after difficult nights and even when she felt exhausted.
Emily surrendered to whatever might happen each night - and this freed her from the pressure she was putting on herself to generate a certain amount or type of sleep and allowed her to move away from the struggle that came from trying to control her thoughts and feelings.
Today, Emily goes to bed sometime around 11 at night and wakes naturally around seven in the morning. Sleep is no longer a concern or a focus. Her focus now is on living the life she wants to live.

Hello Coach Reed. I have a question: what should we do if we have the opposite problem, as in, we often wake up BEFORE our final out-of-bed time? When I set a time for myself to be awake, my body seems to anticipate it and instead wakes up 15-20 minutes earlier. Should I try to train my body out of this habit my staying in bed until the appropriate time, or should I go with the flow and just get up, even if that's earlier than expected?

Wow, great video. I get this on and off, but damn last night was the most intense. I got up, feeling like I couldn't breathe/panic setting in. I was ready to wake up my brother to take me to the hospital incase I passed out. I figured it was anxiety, but it weird that I was so relaxed before going to bed. My gf came over, and we hung out for an hour or 2 before I finally fell asleep. But honestly, letting go of the worry of losing sleep is one step. You'll be tired the next day, but you'll be okay. The falling asleep is the hard part, being tired is easier

Hello Coach Reed. Thank you so much for your videos. I used Sleep Restriction Therapy and CBT to help me beat insomnia 8 years ago, but unfortunately, it's now back with a vengeance! I've been engaging in all sorts of safety behaviors and sleep rituals to try and manage it, but thankfully, your videos reminded me of the right strategies and more importantly, the right mindset for overcoming this obstacle once again. The truth is, I know I can do great things even with little sleep. In fact, the year I struggled with insomnia in college was the year I ended up on the Dean's List at my university! It was also the year I found God, and I have many positive memories of the peace and joy I was blessed with that year despite my struggle with insomnia. Like you say in your videos, it's totally possible to live a fulfilling life according to your values regardless of how much sleep we get at night! Well, my recent bout with insomnia made me forget all of that! Thank God I found your videos. I was up until 4AM last night, but after watching them, I stopped lying miserably in bed and got up and did some light lesson planning and recreational writing. Despite the fact that I only got a couple hours of sleep, I'm actually eager to see what I can accomplish today. I do have one question, if you don't mind: I now teach elementary schoolers or more specifically, summer camp at the moment since school is currently out for the summer. The thing that causes a lot of my sleep anxiety at the moment is the thought that not getting enough sleep will make me grumpy and sluggish in the classroom, which will lead to a less positive experience for my students. Do you have any stories or words of advice for someone who is not so worried about productivity as she is about personality when fatigued? Thank you again for the work you do. Have a wonderful day!

Hello Martin. Since CBT-i is a short term solution, is ACT the long term one ? Should we be practicing it all along ? Because lets say CBT-i works by improving your sleep short term and then make you worry less, this doesn’t tackle the root issue which is the anxiety during a bad night or a speed bump. Which means that when they happen again, we’re going to spiral back. Do you recommend always putting this ‘band-aid’ in periods of bad sleep or tackling the deeply rooted issue which for me & many, is fear of not sleeping. Thanks!

But could the issues be also loud noises? Cause there are frogs squeaking next our home at midnight.

I usually fall asleep fine. But once in a while (usually when im extra tired) right as im about to fall asleep, i forget to breathe. Its always after exhaling, i just dont inhale again, like its too much effort or something, and after a few seconds, i realize it and get woken up with racing heart. This will happen 100 times before i can actually fall asleep. From what i can read online, apnea is when youre already asleep and you stop breathing. This is clearly before i fall asleep. Im right about to fall asleep and im aware that ive stopped. Its awful

This was really helpful. Despite my SO saying maybe you're focusing and honing in on how much you aren't sleeping or feel like you aren't, is the cause of this whole thing. Maybe just focus on each task one at a time and just check off your to-do list, and then instead of trying to sleep, just try to enjoy quiet relaxation. I think this is anxiety gone rampant, and me giving it the power to do so 😅

this is 100% incorrect thete are well studied and documentedhealth.implications of insomnia. treating it like its nothing can be dangerous. neuro chemical, heart, bpregulation have all been linked to it as well as changes in.brain.structure with long term insomnia, aswell asdepression, anxiety and in some cases psychosis

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts - and yet, there is no scientific study that has found chronic insomnia *causes* any specific health problem. Links and associations and maybes and mights are not causations - and interpreting them as such can create more fear, more sleep disruption, and more difficulty. It can also be helpful to consider that insomnia is not the same thing as sleep deprivation: czcams.com/video/_dPWDYW-YgE/video.html
