I have been researching backpacks lately. I wanted a backpack large enough to carry my QRP portable radio equipment for either POTA or SOTA activations. Would've gone 2UZ. Awesome build regardless 👌
At the time know one was swapping with the 2UZ, now Jason at Trail tailor is swapping the 2UZ . Thanks for watching !
There is a bug in iFTX that it will not take 5 watts in the settings. The log can also not edited if you should forget to set the band. But it is cool to only use one cable between QMX and iPhone. It even works without a cable with transceivers with a mic and a speaker so that the iPhone/TRX can pick up the signals.
That’s what I was thinking (bug) about the setting not taking the 5watt input value. Thanks for the heads up on not being able to edit the QSO bands if on the wrong frequency.
I’ve tried using iFTx on firmware v18. It cuts in and out of transmit about once per second in the 15 second cycle. Are all the settings in your QMX default except for VOX being set to On? Also, when SSB is implemented you won’t need to carry a mic, there is always built in mic in the QMX.
Im running iFTX on QMX PCB REV 2 firmware v17. All my settings are default with exceptions to my preferred CW settings. I turn VOX off when operating CW. Oh I forgot about the Electret microphone when I built the kit. Probably the easiest component to install on this build. I also have tested on my IPAD and works well using the lighting to usb camera adapter.
Thanks for the follow up of firmware and settings. I might try doing a factory reset on the QMX, only turn the VOX on and see what happens. I really want iFTx and the QMX to work together. Thanks for checking that the iPad works.
@@32532jfbk You bet 👍🏻 ! Glad to be of assistance. For now I am not updating my firmware since the QMX is working well.
Actually just purchased my QMX in the last few days, and I'm going to use either my iPhone or My iPad with iFTX. My iPad actually has a USB-C port so hopefully I can use just a single cable to the QMX. This is an excellent video and very timely! I hope you try this again and get some contacts recorded. Many thanks - Gary G7TOK.
TNX Gary G7TOK. Glad the video was helpful. I have another portable ops gear testing video coming soon with CW and FT8 QSOs
@Threlly iFTx works well on my IPAD, no issues to date.
Everyone with a QMX will want to watch this video at some point. Great explanation, and thanks for showing how it’s done! 73, KD7DTS
TNX KD7DTS !!! QMX is an awesome qrp rig as will as iFTx app. Both couple to each other perfectly for FT8/FT4 operations.
have you looked into lowepro camera backpacks? they have a good selection at a better price, in my opinion. thanks for the video
Yes was looking at the PRO 55L , which is ~the same price as the F-stop. The Pro-55L carry case for my radio equipment was way too small for what I was looking for. Tnx for the suggestion and watching .
Interesting. I have never tried FT8. I just got a QMX, so I many have to give it a try. 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
QRP Labs are engineering fantastic radios packed with options as well as the price. I thought it was just really cool to have the ability to run FT8 on your iPhone coupled to the QMX.
I love the organizational features on that bag. But the price! Yow!
I really like how this bag organizes equipment which is a huge plus in my book . However the price is a major issue with me. $499 is a bit steep. I will be testing over the next week and giving my honest opinion about the performance of the pack.
Nice pack! I have an issue with bags as well. My wife has a term for it that I will not use here LOL! It will be interesting to see how the pack works out for you. I would like to hear your long term opinion on the PD power banks. 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
😆 i definitely be giving an update on this pack . So far the 21aH power pack has been flawless since January 2024.
I had to pause the video when you said about the price of the bag. 🤣 Nice detail description of what you got inside. 😊
😁 😆 I am sure I change the what goes where in the pack after a few activations, plus I have other radios too that will change the inside of the case dramatically. I like that the case is easy to change for different size pieces of equipment .
Love those little Kifaru pullouts...I need to pick some up and those I can actually afford!
The Kifaru pullout bags are fantastic and well designed. I have had these for ~6years and not a tear or issue with the zippers! Highly recommend them for easy access pullouts .
...... enabler........ hihi.... Doug, you know I have an affliction for bags.. Thanks for the video.
You and me both! I have issues ,HIHI !
Tim is great! Nice that you caught him.
Hey, this is a great radio. I bought one because I didn't trust myself to build it. I am a new subscriber. The clouds were nice, but I would rather just see you operating the radio. Thanks for sharing the activation. All the best, and 73s via W3CT.
Welcome and thanks for the sub!!! TNX for the suggestions and support .
Is that a real M0NKA mcHF ? or one of the AliExpress Chinesium knock-offs (I heard that some are not that bad). And which paddle are you using?
Hi Jason , this is a real M0NKA MCHF with an internal ATU . It is a fantastic QRP rig. The paddle is a TpA made by Larry N0SA, check out is QRZ page.
@@dugbohamradio thank you for your reply. I find your channel motivating to keep plugging with CW. Lucky you! I have one of Larry's latest keys. I wish he still made the one you have! The radio sounded fantastic.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who shorts my s's h's and 5's at times... ;-). Interesting. We didn't think of trying 10 Meters SSB. There was NOTHING on 10 Meters CW in Utah...
HIHI- I have a problem with sequential dits 😆. I have been calling cq on 10 meters everyday in the morning and afternoon with no luck , however I am not even able to hear the 10 meter beacon on 28.200. Hoping 10m opens up so I can get a QSO on the Radio Shack HTX-100.
That is slick! Sure beats labeling by hand!
Labeled 80 vials in 8 minutes. Sooner or later we all will be replaced by automation 😆
So sick. I took my QMX out on my first SOTA activation and forgot my battery (I did the 9v build) but luckily I had brought my MTR4B and had the 12v battery for it. I need to find a dipole setup for portable ops I’ve never used one before. 73 de KI7QCF
MTR4B is a fantastic qrp radio, just wish it high was a 40-15M.
My kind of video! Subscribed. I attended FD for the first time and got some contacts with a KX2 and QMX. Ton of fun! What key is that?
TNX for subscribing ! The Key is TPA paddle made by Larry N0SA. It is an awesome key and great to send on. Check out Larry’s QRZ page .
I would like to add that SKCC is very personal. Its very nice to hear a familiar fist and make friends. I also find using straight keys, bugs and cooties a big part of improving your skill level. Many would disagree with me and say, why not just use a paddle? You can send fast perfect code every time and probably improve your copy speed more. I'm a younger ham that never got to enjoy ham radio before iambic A or iambic B modes. Paddles don't make code, people do. SKCC is made up of many new hams and also many hams with 50 or more years experience in the hobby.
Well said EJRadio!!! I could not agree more with you on how fantastic SKCC is. I learned on a straight key with LICW and I truly enjoy it bc it is my fist and it is unique to me . Thanks for the great comment and watching .
Nice!!!!
Nice to see all the QRP rigs getting a turn during your Field Day ops! Looks like the HTX-100 was getting the job done on 10M. Too bad there were no CW stations on 10. 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
I have another QRP rig coming 😆. I could hear a CW station on 28040 in the weeds then disappeared. I couldn’t hear anything on the 10m beacon 28200 with the HTX100 or any of the other QRP rigs. I ll keep at it until I get a cw QSO on the HTX-100.
Nice way of operating CW paddles standing! 73 de Jon, VU2JO
Roger that! Always hold the paddle in my hand either standing or sitting for portable ops. TNX for watching !
@@dugbohamradio 73
Yo can you contact my dad his call sign is NG7I and we live in Washington
I have not seen one of those rigs in a long time. Great little 10M radio. Were you able to make any contacts? 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
I tried this morning and late afternoon calling cq with no takers. Could have been 10 meter band was not active or getting ready for field day. K8ARE said he could not hear me in OHIO. I did hit ZF9CW on the RBN . I’ll try again tomorrow on field day.
Great video Dugbo and nice fist. As a new CW op I am comfortable with the POTA exchange but can feel my brain cells fatigue during the longer QSOs. CW Academy helped a lot. Still not super comfortable on a straight key but this video is encouraging. My SKCC number is just collecting dust -- need to change that soon! Thanks for another good one. 73
TNX CW! SKCC is a fantastic opportunity to meet a lot of great CW operators. Looking forward to a SKCC QSO with you. 73
I love SKCC. I totally agree that it helps tremendously in getting better in CW. Plus the sked page is such a great tool too to find other ops. Nice shack too.
Totally agree! 👍🏻
Hard to hear me on that one Dugbo! I guess I need to get an amp lol.....
I had the sound split to a speaker and headphones. Headphones helped to a points. Your 1st TX (callsign) was a solid 579 and once again our QSO was vacuumed up by QSB. Only a matter of time until we have a proper solid QSO 😆😃👍🏻
Nice fist on that straight key! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
TNX Patrick!
Thanks Doug! Getting on the air makes all the difference! Its great to share the different ways we can find a path to "On the Air". Thanks for filming and sharing!
Anytime Ed! I started on a SK with LICW and recommended to join SKCC. It made a huge difference for me. I really want to encourage those who are hesitant or have key fright to just get on the air.
I absolutely love SKCC. Great bunch of ops who have no problem slowing down or repeating stuff for new ops. Fun and effective way to improve your copy!
Couldn't agree more! SKCC, POTA and SOTA are fantastic ways to get on the air, improve your CW skills and have lots of fun.
Thanks for the video, I really wanted one of these kits. sad I can't get it now.
As soon as I heard the news WA3RNC was retiring and would no longer be producing radios I ordered one quickly. The kits were gone immediately. Hope you find one on the market.
Congrats on winning the giveaway. Love the intro! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
how awesome!!
The last year has been awesome , learned Morse code got on the air doing POTA and SOTA , meeting great people who share and give back to the ham radio community especially CW OPs. If I ever reach 1K I’ll be doing the same !!!!
Sounds like Red Mountain..?
Wow , you have a repeater 6th sense. It was Palomar 147.130.
@@dugbohamradio Took a shot. Can’t hear the Palomar machines from Temecula….73
WOW! that Blue sure does pop!
Sure does ! Blue Really looks great with the Yaesu FT-65 HT!
Congrats! I love my signal sticks. I have them on all my ht's.
Great Antenna for an HT , especially when I can wrapped up the antenna on itself while I’m hiking a summit and the antenna will not snag on anything on the trail.
Dididididahdah?
Doing my best! Not perfect 👍🏻 TNX for watching .
@dugbohamradio you're doing good, just slow down. Accuracy trumps speed every time!
@@Mike_N6MST great pro tip and advice Mike. 👍🏻 I need to slow down to a rather than running high speed.
My favorite straight key is a Navy Flameproof. That Putkeeg Navy style knob is a great discovery. Now I can retrofit my other straight keys. Thanks for sharing! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
😂 HIHI , Ed you have the best stories, I love them!!! Thanks!
now you tell me!!?? I drilled a hole in a poker chip and put it under the original knob..... took me 3 hours and $150 bucks at the casino.. but finnaly won a $5 chip... Love it thanks Doug!
Fine looking TS-830!
TNX @qrplife. TS-830s is a fantastic radio. I have the narrow CW filters installed which makes this radio awesome on receive. Absolutely love this radio. Once you do it a few times it is easy to tuneup when switching bands. I specially use this radio for SKCC sprintathons. Also thanks for watching!
Love that TR-35! You were lucky to pick one up. Nice fist on the straight key! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
I checked after I ordered my TR-35 and they were sold out. Glad I got one and build with no issues . Thanks for watching and support !!!
Excellent Build Doug! perfect video for copy practice. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Ed!!! So far I’m very impressed with the TR-35 especially when you build a kit and it works, HIHI.
Getting used to my new radio, but one question…What does the F2/SNAP button do?
Sorry found it - must have not noticed first time though. Thx
Great! Glad the video helped you with the menu system. Good luck on the air !
@@dugbohamradioi found, when using CW the ‘peak’ filter gets a much clearer reception. -hope this helps. You video is awsome. I hope you do more on this. Keep up the great work.
@@sandyjohnston9457 I plan on doing another video with better quality video with my GH5 camera , plus I have an ATU installed and want to show that function as well.

Great job ... the drone shots with the CW in the background were very cool.
Thank you very much 😊!!! I think is much better to have other footage of the surrounding scenery rather than just me sending morse code . Glad you enjoyed!
It sure is beautiful up there! Looks like a place the FJ62 would love! Amazing drone footage! Enjoyed the activation. 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
This is a great summit to activate. Oak tree for shade and comfortable sitting. FJ62 has a fuel pump issue that I am addressing , spend more time tinkering and fixing than driving, LOL. Thanks for the watching and the support. Dugbo
