How I’m Reducing the Wait Between Flushes | Rose Garden Tour | David Austin Roses

Taking cut flowers from my roses has always been something I’ve loathed to do. I prefer to leave my flowers in the garden regardless of weather and I leave the flowers on the roses until they need deadheading. However there is a downside to this and that is the time gap between flushes. Several of my roses will be effectively naked of colour for some time awaiting second flush. It’s clear the r...

First of all I am not claiming to be an expert. But over the last few years I have learnt a few things, and I will continue to learn. One of the things that I see often is young roses needing a drink. It’s very difficult to explain and a complex issue involving many factors. In this video I try and show you something that I forced onto one of my roses. Deliberately dehydrating it. Then showing ...

Well this is my visit to the home of Kordes roses in northern Germany. As I mention at the start of the video, half of my brain was thinking about the long drive home after my car started to play up! Beautiful roses Jay Jay. Sweet Honey will recover, they are very resilient and that variety is very strong. Next year it will be back above 5 feet no problem. Your Porcelain Parfuma looking lovely, thank you so much for mine, so lovely of you, she is resting after first flush. I can see she's very happy. I'm just thinking where to plant her at the moment, so for now she's in her pot. Olivia Rose Austin I put in early this year as a bare root she's full of flower again on 2nd flush, I love your Olivia at the front of your garden. That's why I wanted to get her because she was so pretty and seemed a really good bloomer for you. I'm very impressed with how quickly mine has repeated and this flush is definitely stronger & more upright blooms than 1st flush was. Kiss Me Kate is very pretty, a lovely colour ! Lilac Wine is amazing it just shows you how resilient they are, maybe it gets well fed with the compost etc that's giving it a good mulch ! Seanie looks so chilled I love his bed in the garden he is so handsome, such a lovely face 🐶Thanks for the tour, lovely garden and beautiful roses, the scent must be fabulous right now👃

    Hello, lovely gardener---I'm a little late getting to the video tho' I've had it on my Watch List---been some crazy busy times here in the U.S. the last few days. I am so sorry about your Cadfael being disappointing! As I am discovering, he HATES the heat, likes cool weather & sun---now where will we be finding that? I bought a bunch of cheap beach umbrellas with the pointy poles to stick into the sand---on sale at end-of-season last year. It's ridiculous but it did help to stick a couple into some of the pots when we had a 10-day heat wave of about 40 degrees! He'll be back! Most of your roses are looking marvelous, and dear Seanie, having ice cream & a nap in the sun! That's the life! P.S.---I'm sure he would have eaten that sandwich for you!

    I noted quite a few times you said 'I don't know where this one is going to go yet' and it reminded me of myself. I buy roses and sometimes think they are going to go, in a certain place but then I start to change my mind and become very indecisive. I then worry that I am going to plant in the wrong place and then have to move them again! I am like this with other plants too - it sounds ridiculous I know but I think I just want it all to look perfect in my mind. Thanks for the video.

    Hi Jay. My Poet's Wife is about 7 years old. For the first few years it was very floppy & had to be supported, but now it has some good thick older canes at the base which I leave about 12" long when I prune in the spring, then the new growth comes from there as well as the graft area at the base. She is now a beautiful upright shrub, a great addition to my garden as she seems to flower whilst a lot of other roses are between flushes.

    @hollymolly4036 Před 3 dny

    Thank you for the update, I really want to get a Poet's Wife for the next year, the flowers were massive at David Austin's shop, but I went for Charles Darwin this year and they are even bigger and smell is divine. Not criticising, but maybe there is too litle space in between your planted roses to my personal preference, do not think it is beneficial to those from different species. Some old gardeners only plant near the same breed maybe for a reason...I think positioning and space for roses are paramount. We have a coastal climate and tiny garden, our problem is rust and leaf-cutter bees this year, along with caterpillars. Although I want more and more roses, I find it unfair to compromise space/light and air for those that already there. And having roses even in huge pots for years..I would feel guilty, like keeping puppies in the crate). Also not sure that aestetics of too long empty stems with heads somewhere on the tops as I noticed in many ppl's pots is something I like. So yeah, just indulge myself in watching videos of lucky guys with big gardens and big roses varieties instead and dreaming of having bigger space to play with in the future..

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay Před 2 dny

      Hi holy, spacing is difficult. Your words obviously put you on strong ground and sadly I am on weak ground. Most of my roses are closer to each other than I would like. It can restrict the growth and can be false economy cutting some of these roses back that little bit more, rather than see them flourish fully I get that. The spread of disease is also more likely in a crowded rose bed. So it’s not ideal and like I say obviously it puts me on weak ground. This is of course something I can’t argue against. But… I’ve seen many rose beds crowded with different varieties much more crowded than mine and with even narrower spacing. And I’m talking mature roses fully grown and succeeded. The rootstock despite the variety is all the same beneath the soil in the uk perhaps this helps. I’m not and have never advised people plant as closely as I do, but if a time comes I decide something is too crowded or a rose can’t fulfil its potential I have the option of moving or removing something. In an ideal world we would all have many acres of garden and plant 4 feet apart but it’s not an ideal world in which we live. I’ve seen some rose beds look fantastic planted much closer than mine I know it can work. And with a passion for roses it’s the road I’ve gone down. But like anything it’s something I can change in future by removing some IF need be. At the moment I’m happy especially if I had some more Companion planting in my naked beds. :)

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay Před 3 dny

      Hi guy, I’ve just popped out to have a check and you might be right. However the spots are burning their way through and a couple of leaves yellowing. Certainly when I plucked the leaves off before there was a fair amount of yellowing. It may well be a healthy rose but I honestly think just occasionally a rose can misbehave if it gets infected from something or somehow and then it will spread even to a healthy rose especially now we’re edging to the latter part of the season.

  • @hungariancottageadventure77

    Looking great hopefully your Sweet Honey will fully recover, to be fair that rose in the stinging nettle patch is probabaly in a prime position, you said you were throwing food waste there and nettles are a sign the soil is full of nurients, iI guess nettles also draw nutrients up to feed the rose as well.

    0:11 Everyone must have the Poet's Wife. The fragrance is strong old rose with definite grapefruit scent. Several years ago I wanted a David Austin Darwin rose, it was not available, so I got a Poet's Wife instead. I suspect that she is much above and beyond Darwin. A generous amount of quartering also. To have a Poet's Wife in hand is to have a handful of the finest perfume. I inhale her perfume deeply, then exhale it out of my mouth several times so that my sinuses are thoroughly saturated with her perfume. I also suspect that there is some as yet, not discovered aromatherapy thing going on there. My Poet's Wife is the only one of my roses under shade trees far enough away from her so as to not rob her of moisture and nutrients, so she is not nearly as affected by the "dwarism" of intense sunshine, also intense sun/heat evaporates the fragrance out of the roses. So my PW is not nearly as adversely affected by excess sun and heat. 2:26 Yes, I prefer non grafted roses, but for readers, the reason that many roses are grafted is because on their own roots, they remain, weak, spindly, disappointing, but when grafted to a robust rootstock, they will show fine , strong preformance. So, we would like the longevity of non grafted, but performance would be very weak for many of them. We are growing gorgeous freaks that never existed in nature because their weak, recessive genetics, would not endure their natural environment.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay Před 3 dny

      Hi Ralph, yes with hindsight my poets wife with its ability to take part shade maybe I should have planted her elsewhere leaving that prime real estate for another rose. It’s something I’m half considering for future but it’s doing well there just now. It’s taken a little while so no plans to move just yet. Yea they say grafted perform better but from my experience I see same results. Might take a few years to get to a newly purchased potted rose size and strength, but beyond that I can’t tell them apart from behaviour or performance.

      @@Jay_Jay Good evening Jay Jay, You do have warm summer days in England, even longer than here in Ohio since you are farther north, but still the Atlantic ocean and it's Atlantic Conveyor current put a lot of rain and clouds over you that we do not get here in Ohio. An entire week between 90 degrees and 95 degrees and more than a month of 85+ degrees. So my Poet's Wife is my only rose under shade and she does well during the heat, all of my other roses are in full sunlight all day and growth slows down, leaves and flowers smaller and fragrance quickly evaporates out. Around mid August these roses shall be more comfortable. Thank you for your reply! Ralph in Ohio

    Fantastic video mate. Poet’s wife blooming is impressive. Lady of Shallot growth more than other roses. Mine in first year and many thin canes coming out. That leaves dropping in Pomponella seems due to sudden temperature change. Got La Villa Cotta rose here. Have a good day.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay Před 3 dny

      Hi Rakesh, the leaves weren’t dropping as such I was having to pull them off but they were 100 percent dry and crispy at that stage. As were the flowering buds. It was something that happened very quickly. My first reaction was to water of course. And this just accelerated the issue. Entire stems were changing over night and within a few days entirely crispy from top to bottom. I don’t know for sure exactly what it was but I know I stopped watering and just left alone and it’s making a recovery with new growth coming through and new buds as you see. Sudden change in climate I don’t think this was the case not here in the uk. But I guess possible perhaps. When I dig around the rootball 18” or so away from the bud Union checking for throttling from other plants I saw the soil was very moist 6” or so down. This is why I decided to stop watering. It hasn’t been watered now for a good month and seems to be doing well again.

      Yeah it’s all on you countryboy it’s because of you. You will get the blame remember that:) 😂😂😂😂 haha. No this is just an experiment I know some experts say to bury the bud Union even in the uk which is usually pretty wet and damp. I do believe there is some gravity in there argument in as much as new roots will break from the stems. So overall I’m happy with the manner in which I’ve planted all my roses. A few different methods and overtime we will see how they get on. For info rose courage and the updated version of deep secret buried deep. Thanks country boy.

    Your roses are looking healthy and beautiful Jay Jay. My Lady of Shallot rose started in a pot and the following year I moved it into the garden border. Mine is actually about 5 feet tall and very upright growing with no support. It is trying to put on a second flush of blooms. It finally cooled down in Kentucky and we are finally starting to get a little rain. We are now in our normal summer temperatures of 79-89 degrees verses 95-100 of the past two months. Happy gardening, James

      @Jay_Jay Před 3 dny

      That’s awesome to hear James. My lady of shallot has taken a little while to get some decent strong stems to come up. Maybe one or two of them could do with some support I don’t think we can move away from that when the stems get high and with plenty of buds on but that’s ok. So long as they are not flopping down when a foot high. Glad to hear your getting some more seasonal weather. Best of luck

    Great garden, as always! My Penelope is floppy with thin stems and not as fragrant this year too, I suspect she loves the heat🤔 I'm trying a few tricks for basal canes this year to see what works well( from not deadheading to Epsom salt etc) . My best performer so far is dannahue- what a monster and prolific bloomer growing in almost full shade!

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay Před 3 dny

      Hi vorong, The best thing I found for new basal breaks is cutting out stems. I would love to have 10 stems coming up from the base of course but I found when you get to 5, 6 stems rising from the bud Union new basal stems are rare. Ideally I’d like 5 or 6 come January when I prune, and perhaps remove one maybe two and I would hope they get replaced in the coming growing season.

    • @vorong2ru
      @vorong2ru Před 3 dny

      Yeah totally get that, in my case a few of my roses literally have one or two stems so there is just nothing to remove :) Hense why I'm trying to see if anything else is going to stimulate them... @@Jay_Jay

    Hi Jay Jay. Nice to get a full garden tour from you again - seems like ages since you did one. I think I've mentioned that my Poet's Wife has been floppy and is one I've been thinking of digging up, but your cutting back technique to encourage strong new canes and this video have persuaded me to give it another year. It does seem that some floppy DA roses (Lady of Shalott and Gabriel Oak too) tend to develop those strong upright canes after a few years of growth. Oh dear, your poor Sweet Honey - but it'll be back as good as ever next year. As you may remember I came close to losing my Ab Fab (Juila Child) due to moving it when growth had started in the mild winter - do we have to start moving our roses around in December in future? Your mentioning overwatering interested me. I am sure any expert would say I overwater in a big way - my potted roses are mainly in pots placed in saucers and nearly every evening I water the pots until they are draining into the saucers, and if I see an empty saucer I always take that as a cue to water the pot. I am sure that overwatering can kill cuttings and weak or young roses, but I can't remember ever losing an established rose.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay Před 3 dny

      Hi nik, yes the poets wife. The best thing to do is say out loud you’re going to dig her up. Just say it out loud. Perhaps tell Gav you’re going to dig her up. It’s like magic it will send up new strong growth :) I 100 percent think she likes a hard cut back but that’s just me. She’s responded very well in my garden. I’m actually hoping I see some growth from sweet honey this year but perhaps too late now. And before I forget I watched your video last night I hope I responded but as I was typing or shortly after I know my battery died I know I was falling asleep at that point as I was in bed. But I’m hoping I did respond I will check later :)

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay Před 3 dny

      Oh and regarding the watering, I think in pots with saucers I think you’ll be fine if there is drainage. Just keep topping the saucers up and a great way to water. My issue was I water with a hose. Roses in the ground I usually place a hose near to the bud Union a foot or so away, put the hose on tap and leave for a good few mins, 5 mins at least for each rose. And I do this once a month/fortnight, 10 days maybe 7 days depending on heat, weather and age of rose. I think the issue I had was the water may have got trapped there by Pomponella. If water gets trapped by clay it has now where to go. I haven’t watered her in a month now and she’s doing fine I will just have to be careful in future.

      @@Jay_Jay 😅 Is that magic incantation something you found on the DA advice pages? You'd better be careful you don't get burned as a witch (or warlock in your case - but did they burn warlocks? Did they even have warlocks in olden days?). Yes, I was thinking you would be lucky to get much out of your Sweet Honey this year - but you never know, my SH was still flowering when the frosts hit last winter, so you still have 4-5 months for something to appear.

    Audrey Wilcox, Ahhhhhhhhhh!. If you didn't laugh you'd cry. We've all done it and cut off something by mistake. I don't know if you saw D.A.Junior on Bunny Guiness's video of his garden recently, a week or so ago? He doesn't seem to dead head, it seems, until he sees a new shoot coming. It might have been on climbers, I can't remember. I'm not sure I subscribe to that but certainly a couple of my roses shoot quite readily dead headed or not. I guess every rose is different. The Maid of Kent certainly knows how to put on a show which lasts a long time. Enjoyed the video Jay Jay. Thanks and here's a tissue. Cheers! P.

      Hi Peter yes some roses they cal them self cleaning. They re-flower regardless of deadheading and occasionally pretty quickly on some varieties. But as you say roses are different and I think most rose varieties are not so efficient at re-flowering with the old flowers left on. I think most roses will re-flower regardless. But how long to wait. No I didn’t see that video of bunny’s.

    Great video, I’m after a red climber but needs to be scented-DA told me they don’t do red any more as it’s too hard a colour to keep true. The pruning method definitely works-I did it by accident as bought 2 x WOH after a visit to DA in May-the one wilted & I was told by DA to prune it back to regenerate it-hasn’t done much til this month now there’s buds on it whilst the unpruned WOH has just finished flowering so I get the pleasure of uninterrupted blooms now-fabulous. Looks as tho your toms tonic & comfrey worked as I see no black spot anywhere on your roses.😊
