  • Weather forecast doesn’t look great with strong winds set to batter us with rain. Most of the English roses in my garden won’t look better I dont think so I thought I’d do a quick video walk around before they get battered.
    As you will see still waiting on many of my kordes roses! So I’m very reluctantly calling it first flush. This particular year they really are keeping me waiting but I’m blaming the weather we’ve had this year.
    With slow rate of opening I’m guesstimating another fortnight away at this rate.

    Hi Jay Jay,
    I was very appreciative of the video you made for me a week or two ago.
    I did write a response to it but wrote it below your comment rather than below the actual video... so doubt if you saw it.
    So, in order to make sure you do see it, I'm writing it over again.
    "Thank you so much for that wonderful video. It was very kind of you. I was truly touched.
    Your Westerland rose is thriving and the flowers are sumptuously beautiful. On my screen the flowers appear to be reddish-orange but that may just be a distortion. Mine is much more orange-yellow with a hint of pink.
    Likewise, your Mme Alfred Carriere is so pretty. David Austin always used to make the point that its flowers were less well-formed than many but I like its informality.
    The reason I love it, too, is because it is so healthy and versatile and thrives in the shade. I treat it almost like a rambler and let it scramble through trees.
    Finally, the outlook from your garden is so idyllically beautiful. To look out on those fields (in NZ, they have the unromantic name of 'paddocks') with sheep and cattle grazing, must be blissful.
    And the roses that border your lane in front are breathtaking. Rampant and unrestrained - just the way roses should be.
    Your own little piece of paradise.
    Btw, I am in New Zealand, not Australia - and in the chilly, southernmost part.
    Brr .... "
    Your garden tour today was spectacular.
    Btw, such very fine hands you have. 🤭

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  Před měsícem +1

      Hi Helen and bless you. Yes Westerland I’m looking at right now. I’ve just cut the grass and sat on my lounger in the back garden. Looking at it yes orangey yellow, yellow orangey with a touch of pink I think is a great description. A lovely colour and sometimes with this particular cross over colour between the orange and yellow iPhone doesn’t always seem to get the saturation right. Mine has started to move only this year I think.
      Mme Alfred a lovely repeater, unruly flowers I think. A lovely scent. Mine is currently potted as you know with garden earth within the pot. I just want to keep an eye for a couple of years to see how it does front of house. (With me training it)
      Sorry I got your location wrong a kiwi of course. And I know you’ve told me this before. I’ll try and remember. Thank you very much. X

      Hi Cassandra. Mine are probably in their 4th year now. I had 6,7,8,9 decent canes coming up from the base area. I cut back to just 3 and on one I cut back to just 2 canes! I left those canes perhaps 13” high. The rest went back to bud Union. I got several basal breaks and this year she is flowering like never before. It worked for me. Best of luck.

  • @nikkonch
    @nikkonch Před měsícem +1

    That row of Olivia, Eustacia, Gabriel and QoS looks amazing! So many flowers! I think you are right about the weather this spring having suited DA roses - so now we will be hoping for a dull, wet spring next year too. I am wondering if cutting back my QoS would be the best course for me as well - you may have noticed that I have moved my potted QoS (still in its pot) down from the decking onto the bed below so that we could appreciate the flowers from above - having them flower above your eyeline is frustrating - cutting it back severely each year could be the answer. I am tempted to lose my Poet's Wife in favour of a taller and more compact DA rose - maybe Bring me Sunshine? - if only there was a yellow Eustacia equivalent! Sweet Honey - I think we have both learnt our lesson about moving roses at the wrong time this year - I will be extra cautious in future. Can't wait to see your surprise - the tension is building now!

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  Před měsícem

      Hi nik. Yes I think so. Cloud and lower temps. Our heating keeps coming on. Certainly several of my kordes holding back I think.
      Queen of Sweden 100 percent. All my flowers last year were at eye level. That’s not the best effect for that rose. A raised path looking down even better. But I’m over the moon I took another 6-8” off mine.
      Sweet honey I moved in January I thought I’d be ok. The problem was growth had already started due to mild winter. Growth then died back etc, diseased looking leaves and it’s still sulking as you can see. But we learn I guess. And It had to move. Cheers nik

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch Před měsícem

      @@Jay_Jay Yes, heating on. Overnight forecast for Thursday and Saturday is 5 degrees - not good for my tomatoes. On moving roses - what if our winters become so mild that there is never a dormant period? It was the non-stop rain and sodden ground that stopped me moving my two roses (Ab Fab and Margaret Merril) until it was too late - so it's probably better to move them into wet ground rather than leave it too late and growth has started. Anyway, no time to chat, I have to work on my list - the roses I see here and notice being sold online that I just have to buy. I regard it as my patriotic contribution to boosting the national economy. Think my wife will swallow that one?

Louse Odier is almost defoliated so don’t add that to your collection. My David Austin climber generous gardener, however, is flowering better than ever and appears to be disease resistant. Oh my, your garden is absolutely fulsome! The D.A.s are in their glory & your Kordes roses will be close behind I'm sure---I find many of them are a little later than the D.A. crowd. Sorry about the sulky transplants---did you have roses in that bed before & if so, could it be rose transplant disease? Cadfael is a fussy old boy sometimes---my old one has already bloomed but has suckers; the 3 new ones are lush & just coming into bud. Tomorrow we start what I believe will be real summer weather---it rained yesterday---I ran around sticking beach umbrellas into the roses that were in full bloom to protect them---good my roses are in the back yard right now or the neighbors would probably called the asylum! I have black spot, too, for pretty much the first time, but I notice that the new growth isn't getting it, just the leaves that Someone (me) didn't strip in the fall. I'll do better next year. Maybe. Enjoy your lovely First Flush A, then First Flush B when it comes along in a week or 2---twice blessed!

    Yes, my Eustacia Vye spent the winter in her massive, terracotta pot in the 45 degree room, so she bloomed early, her first flush has passed, she is in her third year and the fragrance is above and beyond, strong, old rose with perhaps a bit of menthol undernote. Unique to Eustacia is that faint, golden glow in the center. Everyone must have Eusatica Vye, she will NOT disappoint. You appear to be up on high ground? That solves many disease problems, being up out of the cool, humid, valley night air with feeds diseases with it's moisture.
    Many years ago, I noticed that potted roses are prone to "stalling out" and never regaining top performance. Finally, I decided to mix the lowest 30% of the potting mix with a generous amount of rich garden soil, The upper 2/3rds just perlite potting mix in order to reduce weight and make root penetration easy and water penetration as well. This seems to have given my potted roses more steady performance and longevity. Also, I add tiny amounts of epsom salts which is magnesium sulphate to my fertilizing water, because chlorophyll IS made of magnesium, this appears to have also strengthened the potted roses. 3:24 Be thankful for the wind, it dries leaves off discouraging blackspot and such like.
    4:53 Oh yea! Before you mentioned my name I was excited by that old, Victorian cabbage rose form. The ball/mummify easily in constant wet weather, but we love them enormously for their sentimental, old , vintage form. 5:08 She has the same green tint as my Pashmina Veranda, possibly similar ancestors. 5:05 Yes, Pashmina flowers also stay on for a very long time, looking rather weary by the time that they fall off!😄😄 6:22 Wow! Gorgeous orange sherbet color, they look delicious!
    7:44 Exactly he same as my Poet's Wife, I have her in partial shade for 4 years now so that her blooms do not fade under intense summer sun, but she has quite lax canes, wide reaching, despite my covering her this winter, 20% of her got sunscald and died, so her form is bedraggled, but her fragrance is wonderful, strong old rose with definite garpefruit under notes. She is a MUST HAVE. I did not want her, I wanted Darwin, which was sold out, so I got the Poet's Wife and I suspect that she is far superior to Darwin, I give her a 9.5 out of 10, ten being perfect, simply because nothing is really perfect and also, just in case i find the perfect 10😆 7:55 Yes, just today I tied her up, about 2 weeks past due, but my huge vegetable garden has been getting a lot of time/attention.
    8:33 Strong summer sunshine DOES cause all roses to fade, when autumn arrives, they no longer fade.
    14:44 Last year my Earth Angle was pathetic because I neglected to cover her during January/February, this winter I covered her and she is looking very nice, exquisite cabbage form rose, strong old rose scent with definite grapefruit fragrance notes, a MUST HAVE rose for those who love old, romantic, Victorian cabbage rose form. I Rate her among the very best of roses, also, never any downy mildew, never any blackspot. 16:43 Yes, I love the English cottage garden with it's mix of flowers, and it must have verticality also from tall Oriental lilies, delphiniums and lupines, the English cottage garden is that perfect balance between annoying chaos and boring regimentality. It looks natural, but it is ni fact planned. In my opinion, the English cottage garden is soul meltingly beautiful, a sentimental sight, suggestive of former times when life was less crazy. 18:37 Yes, the globular roses it seems must have dry weather to cause the petals to dry, and therefor contract/shrink in order for the rose to open up. A fun thing that I have done from time to time is to make a short viseo for social media of my thumb rolling back the outer petals, then one compression id released, the rose practically pops open very quickly, It appears to me that David Austin does not venture outside of the bounds of modern buyer acceptability, whereas Kordes, is much less cautious about that, in short Austin is more about commercial viability whereas Kordes is pure art, unfettered by commercial viability. Now, Austin is not wholly given to profitability, because if they were, they would be selling all of the mediocrities that many rose sellers offer. But Kordes really is more for the rose connoisser who is willing to contend with troubles than the general public. And if we shut any troubles out of our lives, we shall be excluding much wonder and beauty. 20:13 Hmmm, that grain field beside of you, could herbicide drift account for some of the bud formation trouble?? 21:25 I thought long and hard about getting a Desdemona, I was not sure if quality would be there. I always go for high petal count, if that is low, then so is my interest.
    Your mention of "spicy" reminds me that my White Licorice rose is beginning to bloom, the one and only reason that I bought it was for it's definite anise seed fragrance, it does have a slight turpentine undernote, which is not pleasant, but overal, it's anise seed/licorice scent is fascinating, otherwise it is a mediocre rose.
    WellI had had no intention of writing a chapter for a book, but the subject is fascinating, and your garden is lovely, so.... Thank you for helping us to decide what to buy , what not to buy, so much better than the salesperson who has no objectivity but to sell. Well, thenk you for sharing, these are the good old days, when January arrives, we shall know that.

    Hello Jay, I garden in the US. I live in Frankfort, Kentucky which is US growing zone 6B. I just found your channel and subscribed. I love your roses! I grow David Austin roses. I have Sophy's Rose, Molineux, and Boscobel in pots. I also have Gabriel Oak, Gertrude Jekyll, Darcey Bussell, Lady of Shalott, and Teasing Georgia in the ground. We in my area had a very wet Spring right when my roses had their first flush. Due to that now many of my roses are covered with Blackspot and rust. I'm only using Neem oil spray weekly with not many good results. Should I just cut them back hoping they put more fresh foliage now that we are getting into the summer dryer season? Thanks, and happy gardening from Kentucky, James

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  Před měsícem +1

      Hi there and welcome. Yes if your roses already have blackspot you have two choices.
      1. leave alone and just accept the blackspot. It won’t affect flowering they say.
      The problem with this is if you have many roses (especially in close proximity) it will likely spread even to healthy roses.
      Last year was bad in my garden and I ended up giving up and eventually just left the blackspot run riot. I literally stopped worrying about it.
      The alternative is to pluck all the infected leaves off and burn them, or dispose of them. This can be time consuming but better to get in as early as possible. Even if you have to defoliate a rose completely its foilage will grow back and it doesn’t actually take as long as you might think. leaves will grow back and they will be healthy.
      Neem oil I’m told does work but wasn’t very effective for me. But great at getting rid of aphids.
      I try to not have roses that are unhealthy and Darcy bussells for me was an unhealthy rose: so I got rid dispite it’s beauty. If your trying to avoid blackspot it’s better to get in before the infection starts. Once it’s started you pluck or accept. I hear chemicals can treat it but I don’t go down that route.
      Best of luck

      Hi there, my experience says you won’t get the flowers of David Austin roses to stay upright facing. The only rose that I have that does that is queen of Sweden. You may wish to ask them if they have other varieties upward facing.
      The best you can hope for is to allow a couple of years for the roots to stengthen, ensure they have a good feed without overfeeding, and perhaps ongoing fortnightly liquid feed. The best I see in my garden is majority of flowers on the rose nodding forward gently. With the occasional upright flower and occasional downward facing flower. When you dead head go back down to a part of the stem that has a decent amount of firmness. This is my limited experience with David Austin roses. Cheers

So I’d like to know how old are your roses along the road and the ones just inside you said are new but how old? Do you fertilize monthly? New roses do you water or do you get that much rain? Hi there and thank you. The roses in the lane are mainly 4 years old now. (Couple of newer ones you didn’t see in this video).
      The roses in the new bed, this will be there first full summer but some of them saw some of last summer when they were potted.
      My David Austin’s this year are doing noticeably well I think. But if we had high temps I’m sure they would be shattering after a couple of days max and my other European roses would be doing better, so it’s swings and round abouts I think. In a few weeks I expect things to swing around again.
      The answer is more roses to hedge your bets :)
      Yes my roses all got fed this year. All got mulched. And now I am applying a fortnightly foilier feed. And a fortnightly organic root feed.
      I’m very happy with this mix. But the spray feed I need to watch as even though it’s environmentally friendly it appears to have burnt some of my roses. Mainly the kordes roses in fact. Jay Jay, apart from Queen of Sweden, which would you say are the most upright DA roses?

      Hi bill. I wouldn’t say any DA rose that I own is upright flowering (other than queen of Sweden) but my Gertrude in the back garden grown as a shrub will often have upright flowers. (Tonight most are facing upright in fact.)
      Gabriel oak can have a decent proportion upright facing. Carolyn knight same.
      Princess Alexandra of Kent when in flower usually has a lovely upright flower here and there.
      From the da I have that’s all I can say. Most DA nod forward or downward. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

      No, that’s interesting thank you. I agree Gabriel is a good strong upright rose. Maybe over the years they’ll grow a bit stronger. Thanks again! 🌹

    Hi, I believe that you removed Sweet Honey. Can I ask what problems you had with it? Thanks

      Hi there, I moved sweet honey because she grew too big. So I moved her to a better spot. She is now at the back fence. I didn’t experience any issues with her.
