  • This is an update on my mums garden and yes it’s been neglected. No watering, no feed, no mulch, no weeding. The roses have been left abandoned yet despite that some of them singing a fine tune indeed.
    They were pruned in January that’s it.
    I was gonna just take a photo of Emily bronte but I think her performance alone deserved a video. Outstanding under such conditions.

    Interesting video and few points to take away. I always cover all boarders soils ( edge to edge) with bark. All roses in pots also have soil top covered with bark. It keep lid on the weeds and helps retain soil moisture. Yes, it is bit extra work when it comes to feed / mulch but I find it worth extra work.

      Indeed Raj I always put mulch down normally. The past year I have gone with a plant based organic mulch which seems to work very well. But this year I just didn’t get round to it at my mums. :(

    Hi JayJay! Good to see your Mamas’ garden. As soon as you clear the weeds and feed them, the roses I’m sure will look much better. I wish one day my sons will also take care of my roses. A lovely evening to you!🌹

    Amazing how resilient they are. Your Mum's roses look great even with the weeds for company. I'm sure it's looking wonderful now you've spent some time there. Weeds are so persistent, we can't get away from them as soon as you turn your back they pop right up again ! Hope you took it easy and didn't hurt your back. Emily looking spectacular too. Hope your Mum is doing well.

      Compared to humans, nature is amazing, is resilient . No matter how hard we try to destroy it little by little.. she is strong and forgiving compared to humans..

    Hi Jay Jay, Good to see the roses, some looking really good, and with your care and attention I guess they'll respond. Getting rid of the 'companion' plants will help too. I'm sure by the time you've finised the garden will look wonderful and your Mum will be over the moon. I'm not sure that your Mum's garden is exactly on your doorstep.

    I'm there with you Jay Jay! I spent a few hours yesterday weeding - they seem to be shooting up much faster than the roses! It's the ones next to the stems of the rose that are the greatest challenge - trying to avoid getting your hand ripped apart. And when you have three rows of roses and you have to negotiate your way through the first two rows to tackle the weeds at the back with limited room to manoeuvre - that's not much fun, but not an issue you are facing there. As you say, a few hits and a few misses with your mum's roses, but a tidy-up and a feed will work wonders, and it's still very early in the season, so still time for them to shine. Don't beat yourself up - and yes, you should feel proud, you are doing the best you can under the circumstances!

      You’re right there nik. I did stab myself in the finger tip just off to the side by the finger nail. Very painful! My own fault for not wearing gloves. I’m hoping to get it finished Saturday but my back was telling me enough. Don’t you go overdoing it either. Most important thing I’ve learnt in gardening… listen to your body. When things start to ache it’s time to stop.

    Hi Jay, I follow David Austin advice and it works well. Prune, feed and mulch. The mulch placed in Spring prevents the weeds surrounding the rose even in late Spring to Summer and my roses are full of bud and now coming into flower. Proof of the pudding is roses in containers where weeds are zero.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Marilyn, yes sound advice. I did try and point out I just didn’t have the time to do that at my mums. I pruned but that was about it. In my own garden I did, but my mums I don’t see her as often as I’d like and I just didn’t have the time :(

    Gardens are hard work and the weeds seem to come from nowhere. It's bad enough managing one garden let alone two. You do a great job and your mum's roses look lovely with loads of buds.

  • @vintagelady1

    So nice to be hearing your "lovely viewers" greeting again! Mercy me, Emily Bronte has gone absolutely mad with buds---I say she's doing it for your mum, who is clearly trying hard but fighting a losing battle against the weeds---join the club, Jay's Mum, you are not alone!! But I can't wait to see what Emily will look like all flushed out, you must put your Mum's chair where ahe can sit in her garden & admire this gift. I know you are doing your best too! My rose garden got started for real 2 days ago---excavator tore up the weeds & grass & St. John's Wort ( ugh, ugly invasive stuff!). Now there is a big patch of dirt (clay) that will get filled in & have a retaining wall & lovely not-clay soil filled in, & I'll plant in the fall when it cools down. Late in life to finally be getting my rose garden but better late than never, as I'm sure your Mum would agree. Tell her hello from another Vintage Lady & I wish you both well.

    Great surprise. I planted Gertrude Jekyll as a bare root last autumn so it was nice to see it in bloom at your mums. Also I had already decided to purchase Emily Bronté next autumn along with another which I haven't yet chosen. I was hoping to see a picture of the cleared garden.....thanks for sharing Jay Jay 😊

    Oh my, a lot of weeding to do JayJay. As for that vine weed really cant abide it, it crept in from my neighbour, and on that side of the garden its a constant pain to dig up the roots . On the bright side your mum's Emily Bronte looks amazing, its gonna be such a fantastic display when its blooming, i only got a Emily bare root late in the season, so im not expecting much this year, i hear emily does not bloom a lot first year anyway.
    Im sure that after you finish with your mums garden its gonna look great, that you will bring those roses right back. Look forward to seeing the fruits as i am sure your mum is:)

    Very useful information, to see what roses thrive best on a bit of neglect. My Alnwick Rose hedge has always been somewhat neglected-not a lot of watering, a feed or two a year, planted in a bright, exposed location under the scorching Summer sun-but it has always thrived, and I think it’s just a rose that prefers to be left to do its own thing, mostly. I’ve heard reviews from gardeners who try to pamper it like other roses and it seems not to do so well for them.
    Try to enjoy the weeding. Therapeutic, I sometimes find it-to get lost in a task in the garden and let the stress melt away.

    Wow…what a Stunner….but Clay soil keeps moisture and Nutrients forever, it just makes a problem when dried out….I couldn’t do without any, I have very loose red Sand with Rocks underneath 😢 ….i envy that soil, much easier to keep Roses there…My Mom had Dementia as well and I know how exhausting it is to provide care for them….❤❤

    My husband has mentioned adding Emily Bronte, and seeing all those buds makes me want to order it. 😆 I wonder if that unnamed Austin is Mary Rose? I've not seen it in person but I've been researching strongly scented roses and this one came up. 😃

    @vorong2ru Před 3 měsíci +1

    wow that Emily bronte is prolific! mine gave me only 10 buds for this flush in its second year... I'd probably wait until they finish blooming before feeding as they just won't need the food on this stage. Why don't you just mulch around those roses with woodchips or something to avoid all the weeding?

    Could you put some bark down when you have weeded? I just bought two bags of SylvaBark mini bark from Crocus, it could keep the weeds down. I love the look of the bark in pots, I previously used Strulch but that always looked a mess.

      Hi there, the past year or so I’ve used an organic plant based mulch which has been very good..But it’s expensive. I will put something down once weeded yes.

  • @rareandwonderfull

    Not proud of the weeds. Here in Ohio, when weather/soil is dry springtime, I must weed with high speed and energy, because wet springtime weather keeps soil wet for so long, with heavy , clinging mud on tools. So, those of us in such climates understand how quickly weeds can get out of hand, long days+soggy soil=rapid weed growth. 0:19 Wow! All of those buds, in 2 weeks or less, that is going to be impressive masses of bloom! 0:53, my entire 60+ years, we eat dandelions, they have 2x the beta carotene that carrots have. Boil them tender, them put in a bit of vinegar, water and salt, very good tasting. Once they bloom, they are too tough to eat. 2:25 For 30 years i have a Japanese made garden hoe, the blade is half moon shape, 3 to 4 inches wide, I keep it razor sharp, then I go out and I can shear the weeds of very rapidly, and the narrow blade fits perfectly into narrow spaces. I sharpen it at the power grinder every time that I use it because keeping it razor sharp = rapid progress through weeds. 3:02 To me it looks like slug/snail damage. Critical plants, I must go around with flashlight and old 1950's garden shears at midnight and snip every slug halfway through, this reduces damage by 90%, the remaining 10% of damage occurs while I sleep at night.
