How do we code bidirectional RCD requirements??? Safe isolation - Skills shortage and loadsssss more
Covering the safe isolation super rod survey, EICR coding of unidirectional devices on bidirectional circuits, is there a skills shortage?
Plus we catch up with what Richard, Craig and myself have been doing.
We also discus Craigs idea to support lecturers directly around the UK (love this btw). Richard shares an exciting learning lounge and ESF link up and we answer a listeners question on the 2396 course.

Can anyone explain why the asshats from the EAS have deemed the C&G 2330 as an insufficient qualification. It was the follow on course from the 2360. It was the only qualification for electrical installation at the time. I hold this qualification along with the old 2391with over 15 years of experience. I can piss all over most other (qualified with other versions of C&G) electricians on our firm in terms of technical and practical knowledge and ability. And yet I am now classed as unqualified by these nob heads, purely down to the fact that the only course available at the time is now classed as insufficient There must be hundreds if not thousands of time served apprenticed "fully qualified" electricians now handicapped with a worthless qualification decided by some pen pushing know nothing.

I think people often forget that the RCD is often there for only additional protection. If the RCD doesn't function ADS and double insulation will still exist.

That was informative. My training was 2002, before the internet really got started, before CZcams and what the heck was Amazon. Visiting my local book shop, ordering Brian Scaddam and anything else just to gain some knowledge ready for the exams. These days there is a wealth of information online, that apprentices should be flying through exams and have one hell of a head start. College's should make this channel mandatory viewing.

I don't think the issue is with this course's pass rate at all, I believe the issue arises with most other courses where you're guaranteed to pass if you pay your money and turn up. I'm a semi retired spark who has undertaken a part time position as a QS and I'm continuously appalled at certifications that are presented to me. The level of obtain knowledge is pathetic by a very large number of electricians out there, as Jamie said the courses have been dumbed down, the collages and uni's over the last 10-20yrs has just been interested in getting bums on seats for money. So they have taught them how to pass the test/ course, not taught them about the concept and requirement of electricity and the electrical industry.

Great pod cast that generates loads of questions. I’ll rewatch it and ask some later. I’m wondering about if there has been any mapping exercises from 2365/5357 to the T-level? How can it be electrical and cut 2 years off an apprenticeship if there is limited science and the work experience doesn’t have to be electrical - just construction? If there is no health and safety j it how can that be APL across to an apprenticeship? I did rhe EAL level 2 and city and guilds are refusing to accept it on my apprenticeship. How are the working hours allocated - is it a 35 day block in the summer holidays or days here and there? Is it the same employer? How can there be no requirement for grade C maths and English if it’s claimed to be an A level standard based around engineering. Scary that they’ve decided they need to develop a ‘step up to T levels’. Is that a damning indictment of FE or the standard of learners at this age and stage. Nice to hear Walsall are adding stuff and making it better, but there will be loads of providers who won’t. Worrying that everyone seems to have some reservations about the introduction. Seems they weee forced out into the education space, with no allowance for current successful pathways to be continued.

Health & safety policy in big companies is stop apprentices getting involved. It puts mental health issues on the apprentices and their mentors as they do not develop the skills need to pass the AM2s and complete their portfolio. Also the portfolios there seems no benefit for the colleges to get the apprentices through this. It just costs the colleges money. These are young person lives, I find it so frustrating and upsetting . Having apprentices in big companies seems a tax relief and a LinkedIn PR dream. We need good sparks for the future infrastructure of this country and it seems training and apprentices are just business. I love the work you are doing Mark and hopefully with more persons involved things will improve.

Hello chaps, Firstly, thank you so much for the content. This has been incredibly helpful; particularly stuff relating to advice for joining the industry via non-traditional routes (adult training). I’m a highly motivated, determined individual currently looking to complete my initial training, and then go on to build my NVQ portfolio. Coming from a financial services compliance background, I am well-versed in gathering evidence of this nature across a range of different methods (videos, photos, written summary). I am based in Leeds and more than happy to travel for up to 3 hours per day (1.5 hours each way) to work onsite. I am currently self employed as a HGV driver and am free to pick my own hours each week (I mainly work on weekends, as the pay is better). I am looking for electricians who can offer a range of work, to enable me to complete the majority of the evidence requirements for the NVQ. I am looking to work 2/3 days per week for minimum wage. If any of you gents require an extra pair of hands and think I may be of use, please let me know. Thanks, James

I am coming back to it after quite a few years, i need to get it done but without any support i feel completely lost. The assessor is very lax and not supportive either. Good video. I’ve Just sat and passed my 2391-052 Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing today and found the trickiest bit was how the questions are worded. It really tests your knowledge as nearly every question is worded differently to what you revise in the many mock papers, IET Exam prep book and online sample tests. The one thing I’d say is if you’re not too sure of an answer there is a good chance you’ll be able to find an answer or very good clue in GN3, Onsite or the BS7671 Wiring Regs. 2391 is much harder than the 18th Edition exam which was piece of cake compared to this. I’m glad I don’t need to sit this again. How bad is the AM2?
