  • Matt very kindly joins me to share his knowledge about apprenticeship standards and frameworks alongside his direct experience working towards retraining as an electrician.
We discuss his background, efforts helping with the apprentice121 facebook group and tips he has for others looking to enter industry at all levels.
We will be getting Matt back on again soon with the rest of the guys and hopefully on a regular basis going forwards.
The 5 minute segment of Matts tips is golden in my opinion.
We discuss the awesome ‪@GSHElectrical‬ and ‪@efixx‬ along with some feedback on ‪@SparkyNinja‬ online training.

Thanks again to Matt and please fire any questions over in the comments. The team will be back once Richard has finished sunning himself, Jamie has figured out his cat cable through crimper and Craig has got his 2396 results lol.

I went to uni and qualified as a psychiatric nurse in 2007. Worked with some of the most dangerous people in the country since 1998. At 40 decided to retrain after getting a bit of tax back so 3 years of night and day school on my days off. 8 years later absolutely love sparky work. Hard at the beginning getting experience but there are people that will give you a chance if your willing to graft and put yourself out there. Good luck pal.

Get out and work as a mate through an agency. All you need is your CSCS and IPAF. Much better than going cap in hand offering to volunteer for some firm for free.

It is always an option. But tbh we need to move as a collective away from agency labour. Short term and sighted thinking imho.

@@A121podcast Why? As an agency worker i get to be CIS meaning my expenses are tax deductible, i get to pick and choose when and where i work, have time off without begging for permission, and i get more money.

Its individual to us all. However lots of those seeking support via A121 are from the agency sector. Often pumped at short notice, have money deducted due to sometimes nothing, no sick pay, no pension contributions, no continuity of work, difficulty with rents/mortgages, no employers training apprentices due to limited employed staff to train them. It vicious cycle that is endemic in construction and I believe plays a huge part in the mental health issues across construction. It is great you have made it work to suit your circumstances and it has a place 100%. But it should absolutely not be the leading metric in site based employment imho. Like I say short sighted thinking for industry and towards ourselves imho. Much better to have well paid employed roles with training, health care, pension, holiday pay and most importantly employee rights beyond what CIS affords.
