    Hi Cat. I need help with my chronic back pain. It’s sciatica mixed with other low back pain, and I want to move through this to be pain free. I’m in Asheville (and we know many of the same folks, Laura D, Heather Miller, Adena, and more. Plus I produce Beat Church!). Are you doing the back pain class? I am doing some of your trigger point therapy, but I’m not pain free yet and could use your personal help. I look forward to hearing from you.

    • @CatMatlock

      Sugar contributes to inflammation, yes, as we discuss in the interview. To lower inflammation in general so that histamine doesn't overwhelm the system one of the first things to remove is sugar.

    what do you mean, "it just released".. what does that feel like?

    • @CatMatlock
      @CatMatlock Před 4 dny

      It feels less painful. Trigger points are chronically held tension and they always have a little bath of inflammation around them, so they hurt when you press on them. When you do this, take a few deep breaths. If it doesn’t feel better, try again later in the day or the next day. You are training your body, “When I press here, you let go.” If not immediate, soon your body will “get it” and let it go, and feel better! If it’s not working, try pressing more gently a few times, just enough so that it feels important. Breathe deeply and relax your body. If you are tense, it won’t be able to release. I hope that’s helpful!

    Anything for bilateral sciatica?

    • @CatMatlock
      @CatMatlock Před 17 dny

      Hmmm... that's very unusual to have it on both sides, which makes me think it's one of two things: 1- either your pelvis is tucked under so much that both sides of the sciatic nerve are being pinched due to excessive tucking. You'd need to release belly, hamstrings, and glute max first before doing anything else. 2- it's not true sciatica but bilateral trigger points in the glute min muscles, which is often related to too much crossing of the legs and tension in the inner thighs. Release adductors of the inner thighs first, then the outer hips, glute min.

    So if I habitually stand with weight on my left leg will it cause pain to the left SI joint? I've had left SI joint pain for a couple years. Somewhat under control after strengthening deep core muscles but I still feel it. No fun. Thank you Cat. Very informative.

    • @CatMatlock
      @CatMatlock Před 20 dny

      Hi Eileen. The short answer is that ... it depends. SI joint pain can come from the quadratus lumborum in the lower back or it can come from the gluteus medius in the butt/pelvis. Typically muscles that are pulled LONG are the ones crying out in pain. So if you're standing off to the left and the pain is on the left, that's probably from glute med. If you're standing to the right and it's on the left, that's probably quadratus lumborum. Hope that helps!

      You're welcome! One thing to consider is WHY you're having those trigger points. If this treatment stops working, you'll want to expand the areas you are treating: work on the other side of the body as well, check and see if you have one hip (leg) higher (longer) than the other, watch how you stand and check your posture, etc. And I"m glad this helped and hope it stays gone! It may take a week or so to stay gone (if no other conditions are present) so stick with it.

    Is this good to do if these muscles are just hard as rocks and tighten up on all my runs?

      Yes yes. Here's the thing, though. Release the calves a bit as well. Then do this outer shin work. It's all related. And when we use our muscles, that can activate tension and trigger points. It's great to do some rolling right after your run. Run, roll, stretch.

      @@nc8186 Did you also do some release work in the calves? I'm also wondering what type of ball you used. If the ball is too firm, anywhere in the body you use it, it can be too much pressure. Yes always do a little bit and then do some movement. Keep me posted. Keep moving! Keep releasing around the area. Check tibialis anterior as well. You might not have hurt the nerve at all. You most likely aggravated the trigger points without releasing the other parts of the system: calves, a little bit of hamstrings, tibialis anterior also.
