With the crazy colors of the Magnesium, the only thing I can think of is maybe you're putting so much energy into that you're ionizing it multiple times over, reaching 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc ionization energies. Depending on the energy. Which would each presumably have their own color, since it's another oxidation state. The only problem with this explanation is it should have happened to other metals you did it with, too. I'm sure their ionization energies weren't so high you couldn't do the same. So, I have no clue. That's just my best guess.
