- Nerd vs. 7 tornadoes. Who will win?
What started as a simple desire to see cool storms got carried away and I ended up getting chased down the prairie by a huge tornado.

I know this is quite different from my usual content on this channel, but it was simply too cool not to share. I hope you guys like it!
I should probably have given more background on why I ended up in the middle of this tornado outbreak lol. I've been a life long weather enthusiast, and more recently, I've gotten into storm chasing. In the days leading up to August 9, there was a decent signal on the weather forecast models for tornadoes in northern IL.
More often than not, forecasts like these just don't pan out. Occasionally they can be spectacular though, so I was willing to make the trip in case something cool happened. What unfolded that afternoon blew every chaser's wildest expectations. EVERY storm was spinning, and so many of them had TEXTBOOK supercell structure! It was the experience of a lifetime for a weather nerd!
I want to thank B. Dean Berry for all the storm chasing equipment recommendations, Mike Brady for all the advice he gave me when I first started chasing, as well as all of the members of the StormTrack community for their knowledge and analysis over the years. Oh yeah, all the meteorologists at the SPC and NWS are awesome too. :D - Věda a technologie

I have come to the conclusion that this man is clinically insane and has no regard for self preservation. Absolutely wonderful content.
If he had no regard for self-preservation he would already be dead, he's just willing to risk his life for the joy of chasing a tornado or building death rays that should not exist for any reason whatsoever.
There is a certain kind of person that just can't enjoy things that most humans would enjoy because their mind is so far ahead of ours in terms of functionality, they need to be out in the real world hunting down monstrous death traps made by nature or they need to be creating death traps of their own to feel any meaningful amount of joy for any prolonged amount of time. Styrofirmly fits in this category of human
He’d be dead if he had no idea of it, he just knows his limits, and I’m sure he knew he would survive this.

There’s no way to fully know with weather patterns, but he definitely knows enough to have a higher chance of survival than someone who doesn’t know as much in the same position.

The fast-forward driving shots give an incredibly visceral sense of scale on those storms. You can tell right where it is, how big, and where it's moving. The tornado goes from a video backdrop to a tangible entity.

I already do and it’s called a dog.
OHMYGOD WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PERSON!!! LOOK AT THAT SMILE, UNBELIEVABLE
My eyes may be tricking me (because I’m watching this at 1:30 am) but tornado number 3 appeared to be anticyclonic. Which is INCREDIBLY dangerous as they’re super unpredictable in their movement and are typically the sister of a larger cyclonic tornado that is either on the ground nearby or about to come down. The phenomenon has claimed the lives of storm chasers before. I’ve never seen one in person, but I know when I do chase my friends and I tend to focus on the tornado in front of us, which is a practice I definitely need to break.
Tornadoes are dangerous as is, but the anticyclonic tornadoes are prone to switching direction in a split second and they’re typically extremely quick. In December of 2021 there was an incredible tornado (we missed) up in Minnesota I believe that had a forward speed of over 100 mph. If my memory serves me, 103 mph. My friends wanted to chase it, but as we had just returned from chasing the mayfield tornado and intercepting quite a few in Tennessee and driving straight back to texas in a 39 hour period, it was off the books for us. Also, my minivan may run at 120 mph, but the roads have curves, and a 100+mph tornado will take shortcuts.
