What started as a simple desire for a better microwave got carried away and I ended up converting it into a 700W laser oven!

In this video I attempted to modify my microwave to cook better by upgrading the magnetron power supply. Switching from a half wave voltage doubler to the full wave circuit allowed me to double the power and then some, but I eventually ended up frying the magnetron.
I ended up gutting the original parts and added my own bank of high power blue laser diode arrays. The new oven draws about 2kW of power, and about 700W of that makes it out as laser light. I cooked a bunch of different foods with it like smores, steak, toast, and several others.
Cooking food with lasers is one of the most requested experiments I try on this channel, so this laser oven should satisfy those desires quite nicely. The effects on food are interesting to say the least. Lots of things burn under the blue light, adding a "smoky" flavor. Yummy.

I've burnt chocolate before trying to melt it and make chocolate dipped strawberries one time. For some reason it tasted wayyy better than just normal melted chocolate, and I haven't been able to replicate it since. That char is something special on certain food groups.
Anything with sugars in it could be caramelized, so you probably did something like that accidentally.

At my university back in the day there was a dude building a RF based microwave oven out of SiC electronics. So in steed of a magnetron it had a SiC RF transmitter. It was quite a bit more efficient and also fairly light. The SiC circuitry was prototypes but i would guess they would not be cheap

Same, especially after seeing one explode up close. They had the cover off for...reasons(?), and a CRX dashboard (complete with all kinds of metal bracing on the back) that was propped up in the corner somehow fell into it. I'm not an electrician, so I don't know exactly what all happened, but 2/3 of the main bar that the breakers attach to was vaporized in about 3 seconds.
Ngl, I would feel much safer handling uranium fuel rods that I do messing with electricity, you generally don't get a do-over.

X-Rays are ionizing radiation that penetrate solid matter and can harm bystanders. Blue/Ultraviolet lasers and microwave radiation are easily contained and non-ionizing.
William Osman isn't exposing himself for long periods of time, and at most he's catching the sidelobe emissions of the X-Ray tube, so it's not that great an exposure, but it's far more risky than working with lasers.

He at least legitimately understood the danger and built a Faraday cage around it, and used a proper tool to change the power output.
