TV comedy and drama has always fascinated me, so join me as I delve in to the history of the shows and people who have been responsible for some of the most ionic, and even rarely seen programmes and series.

The story of “Last of the Summer Wine” | Summer Wine Decanted
I very much enjoyed watching last of the Summer wine on PBS in the U.S. Very sad when Compo died. It was like losing a member of my extended family.
Hi Chip. It was even difficult filming the shots about Compo's passing, especially as were were in the locations used in the show.
Hello there just want to say thank you very much for all the videos of laughter the Summer Wine made. They are well written brilliantly presented well researched most of all thoroughly fascinating. If there was a DVD of all your episodes you've made Daphne include them in my Summer Wine collection. As they are on CZcams you are restricted on what you can include in your episodes if they were made for not on CZcams. You could have elaborated more by including clips from Last of the Summer Wine episodes possibly behind the scenes and also clips of the actors and actresses show their other works. But for me I'm just glad you've made these for a Summer Wine buff. Also the music that you have included at the beginning of the episodes absolutely beautiful can you tell me please who that is playing thank you. Hope you don't mind me messaging you all the best.
Thank you Scott, pleased you are enjoying the videos. A couple of the videos do include brief clips, which is generally allowed as "fair use" in documentary and commentary videos, but when I do that the BBC get all the advertising revenue from the video. I commissioned the music which is composed and performed by Augusto Diniz linktr.ee/augustodiniz
I’ve being binge watching/listening to your videos over the last few days, a great listen! I really liked Billy as a character, his comments about the wife & wife’s sister always cracked me up (too close to home maybe 😂) Billy, Clegg & Trully for me was a really enjoyable overlooked line up in later years
Thanks, Ezza! Billy had some good lines and was a bit of a clown, so he covered the middle-ground between quiet sensible Clegg and Officious Truly!
Grew up with foggy as the third man, never liked seymor but in later life watching repeats I really like Truly
Hi Ezza, before watching every episode, many times, for research, Foggy was the third man I knew best. I've grown to like Blamire, and never had a problem with Truly!
Yet again another interesting video much appreciated all the best
Thanks again, Peter!
Thanks for another great video all the best to you
Thank you Peter, pleased you're enjoying the videos.
Hey Leigh when watched what’s Santa bought for Nora Clegg door knocks he said I wonder who that could be he said the same line in Wallace and Gromit the wrong trousers in 1993 3 years after that’s clever
Well spotted! Peter did sometimes wander in to a more obviously northern accent!
Hey Leigh i just watched getting Barry higher in the world I noticed that Barry white car looked familiar to Elizabeth white car in keeping up appearances
Barry was driving a 1978, Austin Morris Maxi; Elizabeth had a 1989 Austin Metro. Same make, different models.
Very enjoyable video 👍
Thanks, Onyx, pleased you enjoyed it!
That Ladies Coffee Circle Might put you Off Marriage.
It didn't put Barry off and he was press-ganged in to attending a couple of times!
Excellent video. Great to hear the back story of some of those wonderful actors.
Thank you, pleased you enjoyed it.
Hey Leigh I watched when Edie and Roz was chatting that was sweet them two Edie says it’s furniture day Roz furniture day what’s that when it’s at home 🤣 Edie is the day I do the furniture 🤣
What is odd is, although Roz had many men-friends, she was brought up with the same values as Edie, and does look after her own home. Even when I was young (1960s) Monday was still washday!
I'll think you'll find the unidentified man in going to Gordon's wedding is the person out of Emmerdale the actor Eric Pollard
Did you mean Julie's unidentified boyfriend? Eric Pollard is a character in Emmerdale, played by Chris Chittell.
….Fred Dibnah…a ‘no nonsense Yorkshire Man’ 😱….he was born in Bolton wasn’t he 🤔😊
I think I'm allowed the odd slip in over 7 hours of video scripts!
@@upstagedbyadog …absolutely 👌….no malice intended…love the video 😊
You missed Das Welly Boot where Wesley "borrows" Barry's Maxi's engine for the boat their restoring which Foggy promptly remarks "too much engine Wesley" Barry can't believe he's managed to loose a whole engine,,, trying to convince Brenda until at the end of the episode it quickly returns..
I did mention Wesley borrowing the engine in The Pegden Family video czcams.com/video/VcPwlobxVc4/video.html
Drink your coffee ☕☕
Hey Leigh when watch keeping up appearances Rose is smiler to Marina talking about men and there men friends
At least Marina stuck to - more or less - one man!
@@upstagedbyadog yeah Rose liked Reg and Dennis lol 😆
@@Scotty19 .. there were about 20 mentioned in the show!
@@upstagedbyadog oh yeah i remember Rose mentioned Mr Crabtree to
Just a small point: In one episode, Edie refers to Seymour as "...the only boy among all us girls". Which does imply more sisters than just Ros.
I had missed that - that does seem to imply there was at least one other sister. When they grew up in the 30's families were generally much larger that nowadays.
Purely a personal perspective and based only on the first three - the best 'Third Man' for me was Cyril Blamire. He not only bore some resemblence to my late father, but shared an army background in the Royal Signals. During and after my own army service I encountered several Foggy-like fantasists whose stories, had they been true, would have earned them all a chestful of medals For my wife, her favourite character was Seymour. She spent her working life as a teacher and had met some who, like Seymour, had become teachers as a result of the Emergency Training Scheme to fill shortages in the profession after the war. Seymour has all the mannerisms of a teacher and the exaggerated gestures, too.
Thank for your interesting insights! I recently realised that I disliked Blamire for the wrong reason - Michael Bates seemed to shout too much, but I like the character more than Bates' performance. Good point about Foggy's lack of medals, you can guarantee if he was ever asked if he had any he would have said he was too modest to accept them! I wasn't aware of the Emergency Training Scheme - that would explain why he was not entirely suited to teaching! Be careful what you say about teachers, Peter my cameraman is an education professional! 😉
In about writing about an early episide, you mention the trio visiting a stately home This was Cannon Hall. I spent most Sundays in my early teens fishing in the three lakes there. Given Billy Hardcastle's supposed ancestry, it may be of interest to remember that Cannon Hall has the alleged bow of Little John. I remember seeing it there more than sixty years ago.
@@eyesopen1850 I was aware of Cannon Hall, it was one of the bits of detail that didn't make the final script. I knew Robin Hod's (supposed) grave was local, but Little john's bow is an interesting detail I'd not heard before.
Fantastic videos loved last of the somner wine shame it had to end
Hi Davy, thank you! It would have been good to see how Hobbo and the guys continued!!
Yes it would have been fun
Hey Leigh when Howard goes to see Clegg about Marina I always notice that Howard always looks out Clegg window every time lol 😆
Howard knows "she" might be looking!!
Thanks for the great information, love some of the old vehicles, some quite rare now. You work hard to gather your facts, thanks again love watching them all the best
Than you Peter! I have always been interested in Transport, but mostly the aesthetics, not the mechanical bits! Ironic, as dad was a mechanic !
Absolutely a beautiful gentle clean comedy as a fan of the sitcom and a owner of every single episode on dvd i can relate to the timeless gentle humour of this sitcom without being crude or distasteful in my humble opinion a pure classic sitcom in every sense of the word 😊
Hi Stephen, yes I totally agree. That's probably why it lasted so long!
@@upstagedbyadog yes agreed Leigh I'm in total agreement with you there it is truly a iconic sitcom best regards Leigh from Stephen 😀
Great video i do remember the late Blake Butler also appearing in one episode of The Good life where he played the part of a fruit and veg seller who i believe in the sitcom Tom Good was in competition with 😊
Yes, Blake was Ronnie Boxall, who had a small van and a very large assistant!
Hey Leigh when I watch Seymour years with Clegg and Compo I noticed the crowd have some light laughter in the crowd some light laughter
The audience reaction might sound different depending which studio they have used, there might be smaller audiences, sometimes. Also how the engineers have mixed the sound will affect how it sounds.
Foggy for me love Brian wild
He does generally seem to be the favourite Third man!
The choral rendition of the _Summer Wine_ theme at the end of ‘Whoops’ (Season 5, Episode 9), is sublimely beautiful. That might be how I’ll always remember Foggy, Compo and Cleggy, exclaiming ‘Whoops!’ by way of a novel substation for ‘Geronimo!’ as the old friends laugh together and walk away into the Christmas Eve night 🌲🍷
Well said, Edward! I think it was inspired to have the Holmfirth Choral Society sing with the theme tune for the first time. It really rounded off the episode and gave it a warm, Christmassy ending!
Never could figure out the layout of Ivy’s back kitchen but from the door to the counter, she can’t have had mind more than three feet of space between one wall and another before it back onto the brick wall of the alley!
Hi Edward - that's a bit of tv cheating! I do mention it in my Location Trivia video: czcams.com/video/fWRWP9tyWug/video.html - there are many examples where the crew have "cheated" ... some locations are not what they might seem!
It’s a shame that Hobo, Alvin and Entwistle couldn’t have had a few more seasons - it all became increasingly eclectic and slapdash after Foggy departed for the final time but when Hobo arrived on scene there was suddenly a simultaneously fresh and yet very classic energy with this new and basically unplanned trio but sadly it wasn’t to be 😔
Hi Edward, while a lot of people didn't like the Hobbo character, but he was only just getting going. Roy Clarke had a difficult job to introduce a new charter to keep up the momentum of the earlier Trios.
Nice one always enjoy your videos many thanks .it was a great series watched every one .I loved homefirth visited twice beautiful place
Thanks Peter! From memory we went to Holmfirth about 15 times over the period of about a year, for 2-3 days each time! Although we're usually rushing about to get filming done, not much time to enjoy the surroundings!
Ms. Davenport's assessment of "The Whole Modern World" is Spot On.

Glad you enjoyed the video Peter!
I'm enjoying these Leigh. I've watched MOST of "LOTSW". I'm catching up though. I'm American and although we had a Few British shows here like "Keeping Up Appearances" and "Are You Being Served" it's only in the last decade, thanks to the Internet, that I discovered "Last".
Hi Pontiac, pleased you're enjoying the videos!
Howard is one of Fave Characters.
He must get credit for persistence!
Wally Batty is one of my fave Characters.
He may be downtrodden, but he sometimes gets his own back on Nora!
My thoughts on Russ abbots portrayal of hobbo in last of the summer wine was rather other the top and whilst not being unkind to the late Bill Owen Peter Sallis and the late Brian Wilde was not a patch on the original characters of Compo Clegg and Foggy Dewhirst my honest opinion was the same of Bill Owens real life son Tom Owen though he did quite a good job of stepping in to the shoes as the long lost son of Compo Simmonite he just didn't have the same sparkle as his late father Bill Owen but I also liked how Michael Aldridge played the part of Seymour Uttherswhaite so well the retired headmaster in the sitcom i found that the late Michael Aldridge was well written for the part of retired headmaster Seymour Utterswhaite and they seemed to work well together in the comic timing
I think the Hobbo character would have evolved in time, but he didn't get the chance! Seymour was more sympathetic to the others than Foggy was, perhaps that's what made the difference.
I love the information it must take you alot of time collecting the facts. Thanks again for the series love watching them, all the best to you
Thank you Peter! The entire project took about 2 years, to research, write, film and edit.
My favourite third man was blamire😂
I have grown to like him more, I just think Michael Bates shouted a bit too much!
@@upstagedbyadog never could take to foggy or Seymour don't like it when foggy speaks cleggs name and then when it comes to compo he says "that man" it really winds me up LOL 😂

... and it's not like there weren't 20 other crew members available to just sit in a chair with a drink!
Looks mighty cold there
It was cold, but more to the point some of the roads were blocked, which delayed our journey and made some of our locations inaccessible!!
@@upstagedbyadog I bet that was annoying, that's the trouble with Yorkshire it does get a fair bit of snow
@@peterclark9677 It was annoying doing a three-point turn on a narrow, snow covered road, with a steep drop on one side! It was a long day, but in retrospect, it was fun - sort of!
I've been to to the village twice a beautiful part of the world ,there was a museum there, worth a visit .another great video cheers

Hi Leigh when watched the love mobile when Smiler with tandem outside Auntie Wainwright shop I noticed people was watching down the street there
At least it is a fairly quiet road. I have recently watched episodes of "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em" and "Til Death us do Part" and in some of the location shots in a town centre, there are dozens of people on the pavement on the opposite side of the road, obviously watching what is going on!
