  • In the early series the Trio are joined by four regular characters; Sid and Ivy, the owners of the local café and Compo’s next-door neighbours, Nora and Wally Batty. Join me in the Yorkshire countryside and re-trace their parts in this record-breaking TV sitcom.
    The year 2023 marks 50 years since the pilot and first series of “Last of the Summer Wine” were broadcast. This series of videos is filmed in many of the well-known, and some less well-known, locations seen in the programme.

      It was much better in later episodes. I often wonder if tv designers thought people would not notice fake exteriors, or would accept them, like you do with all scenery in a theatre, where nothing is real. Of course the camera technology has improved, so it's easier to spot if something is not real. The best example is Clegg's home, in later series they use a combination of photo-realistic background and set elements like the stone wall and gravel path. The lighting helps too, as it's darker inside Clegg's compared to outside.

    Wally's last onscreen remark from the episode "When you Take a Good Gite, Yorkshire Tastes Terrible". Nora says she could never marry a German, to which Wally replies, "You never even tried!" before getting manhandled back inside.

    Another wonderful video! I recall some later episodes (Christmas episodes?) had brief scenes where Nora and Ivy were together, reminiscing fondly about their late husbands. Nice to think that this was Roy Clarke's way of honoring John & Joe by mentioning their characters. Of course, this is in contrast to the coffee-clatch meetings where no man (dead or alive) was immune from criticism from the ladies, lol.

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  Před rokem

      If director/producer Alan Bell realised that he show would be shorter than the planned running time, Roy Clarke would write a short scene, usually for Ivy and Nora, to fill up the time!

    • @MrDannyDetail
      @MrDannyDetail Před rokem +2

      I seem to remember a later episode, and probably actually a coffee morning scene, where the other ladies are having some moan or other about husbands, and Nora responds with a word or phrase with an 'r' in and prounces the 'r' in the back of the roof of her mouth in the way that Wally would have done (because Joe Gladwin was unable to pronounce his 'r's and devised his own way around it) and Ivy reacts to her with a little affectionate/sympathetic smile to acknowledge that she got the reference even if the other ladies in the room couldn't have done due to arriving in the area later on. It probably was scripted, but could just as easily have been an ad-libbed moment by Kathy and Jane.

    Never could figure out the layout of Ivy’s back kitchen but from the door to the counter, she can’t have had mind more than three feet of space between one wall and another before it back onto the brick wall of the alley!

      Hi Edward - that's a bit of tv cheating! I do mention it in my Location Trivia video: czcams.com/video/fWRWP9tyWug/video.html - there are many examples where the crew have "cheated" ... some locations are not what they might seem!

    Yet another well researched and delightful video Leigh, I wondered if you would pick up on Wally being referred to as Harold in the pilot :) Also in the pilot, while Kathy Staff’s character is hanging out the washing, another lady is seen coming out of what will become Nora’s house with a basket full of washing and you never see which front door is Kathy’s ?

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  Před rokem +1

      Thanks! Pilot shows are often never aired, they're like a trial run, but as the "pilot" was really an episode of the “Comedy Playhouse” series, we got to see it. When it was decided to make a series refinements were made, just like would happen with an un-seen pilot. I don't think much thought went in to who lived where, but that they just wanted to have a some women doing chores to berate compo. There are some great un-seen pilots, like Lilly Savage presenting "The Generation Game"!

    I live the reaction of Compo flirting with married women by the husbands is normally a "Rather him than me, good luck to him surviving" with absolute trust in their wives.

    Thank you for your "Whatever happened to ....." explanations. I always wondered what happened to Ivy's snd Norah's husbands. I did think they "died" to get some peace and quiet from their shewish wives. 😊

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  Před 8 měsíci

      I do think it is a shame that some characters "vanish" with no explanation. I think it is understandable that if the actor passes away, that killing off the character is not always ideal, so that usually means they are forgotten and never or rarely mentioned again. In the case of Sid, Ivy specifically remembers him in "Just A Small Funeral"; the original PC2 (Tony Capstick) is said to have transferred to Huddersfield; and Smiler, according to Tom, is said to have "disappeared". Compo couldn't just vanish; as probably the best known, most loved character, people would have felt cheated if Bill Owen's passing was not specifically referred to. As it happened, despite the trilogy of episodes being written in a hurry and existing scripts being re-worked, the loss of Compo was brilliantly handled with sincerity and humour. A very difficult pair of emotions to combine.
