    Thank you very much for this tutorial. I discovered a few years ago that the WSUS server updates were not being approved like they should have been from the outside vendor. So I disabled it, and kind of forgot about it. This forced me to remote in weekly to each of the workstations on the domain if the powershell cmdlet failed to update the workstations or to ensure that the updates were actually installed and applied, which takes away time from other work I have to do. I'm a Paramedic. Ask me about emergency medical services and I can help you out. So last month I decided it was time to set up a homelab and start figuring stuff out on my own. I've been the de facto IT person at work for a few years now, figured it was time to take the dive. So with this in my back pocket, once I know it is working on my homelab, I will delve into it for work to hopefully make my IT related load lighter. Again thank you!

      If your friends arnt on your local LAN then they won’t be able to join unless you open up ports to allow that traffic in. I would do some research on port forwarding and how to secure the server using something like an access control list.

    Awesome and clear vid but, as a beginner, I seem to be missing something. We set the VLANS on the USG. Got it. What now? Am I correct in understanding that the instruction to a client as to which DHCP scope to get IP from is done by setting a proper vlan on the port the client device is wired to?

    • @ITLumberjack
      @ITLumberjack Před 4 měsíci

      @deezee1570 I think I understand your question. If this doesn't answer it, let me know and we will try again! VLANs and subnets are concepts in networking that often work together to organize and manage network traffic efficiently. A VLAN operates at Layer 2 of the OSI model and provides a logical separation of networks at the data link layer, allowing you to segment network traffic without requiring multiple physical networks. On the other hand, subnets operate at Layer 3 (the network layer) and are used to divide a larger network into smaller, manageable parts...subnets. Each subnet is associated with a specific IP address range. Typically, you would assign one subnet per VLAN to keep network organization straightforward and secure. For instance, if you have two subnets, say 10.10.0.0/24 and 10.20.0.0/24, you would ideally place them in separate VLANs to isolate their traffic at the data link layer. When it comes to assigning IP addresses dynamically, a DHCP server comes into play. The server allocates IP addresses to devices from a specific range, known as a DHCP scope. However, the DHCP server operates at Layer 3 and does not directly interact with VLANs. Instead, it assigns IP addresses based on the subnet from which a request was received. If a DHCP server is on a different subnet than the client requesting an IP address, a DHCP Relay Agent is used. This agent forwards the client's request from the client's subnet to the DHCP server. The server then determines the appropriate IP address for the client based on the subnet from which the request originated, ensuring the client receives an IP address that matches its subnet. This setup allows network administrators to efficiently manage network resources, ensuring devices can communicate effectively while maintaining organizational and security requirements.

    Was there a reason why you wanted to keep the Network+? I mean if you are experienced, i really see no value in an entry-level certification that was meant for gaining foundational knowledge. Most compita certs are for people just starting out or to fill in gaps of foundational knowledge and concepts that maybe missing before achieving more advanced associate and professional level Certifications.

    • @ITLumberjack
      @ITLumberjack Před 5 měsíci

      Good question! So I originally took it the first time when I didn't have any experience. The second time I took it after I had a CCNA. When I took it the second time I had not been in a testing center in quiet a while and I was set to take my CCNP Switch exam a few weeks later. The testing center I was going to was new and I wanted to get familiar with the environment and there check in process. I personally do not like surprises so I felt like if I can go in and take an exam like Network+ and pass it, it will give me a boost of confidence as well as to familiarize myself with the environment. Lastly it kind of annoyed me that I had both an active A+ and Security+ and not a Network+. I know that someone may fine my justification of this silly (and I completely understand) but at the time I felt that it was the best choice for me in helping me pass my CCNP Switch.

      @@ITLumberjack oh ok that makes sense. Not sure if you knew about this but according to CompTIA any higher certifications you obtained or renews would automatically renew your A+ and Network+. So if you gotten the Security+ recently that should of had renewed the Network+. Also when did they get rid of the online testing? According to CompTIA they still do online proctor exams. I plan on sitting for both my Network+ and RHCSA this year. I wok with RHEL in my current role now that I have some experience under my belt.

      @@eman0828 I did know about the renewals if you take higher certification. I took the Network+ in 2013 and I didn't take another CompTIA test until 2020 or 2021 so my Network+ lapsed. I probably could have submitted my CCENT and CCNA in for CEs for renewal but I didnt. As for online vs in person, I prefer in person. I have had some not so plesant experiences with online exams thru Pearson. Also at my current job, the Pearson testing center is only a few minutes away so its pretty easy for me to get over there and take an exam. Good luck on your Network+ and RHCSA! • @ITLumberjack
      @ITLumberjack Před 6 měsíci

      I had more than a decade of experience before taking a certification test. With that said experience doesn’t always equal a pass. It does help with troubleshooting but it doesn’t always help with knowing the terminology required to pass. If something in cybersecurity is your goal, I would consider going straight to Security+ after the ITF+. It’s a certification that the DoD requires for security clearance and it is (in my opinion) the most valuable of the main CompTIA trio. If you feel like you have a gap in your knowledge base, you can always go back and get A+ and Network+. The Security+ will also give you a better understanding of what pathway with in cybersecurity that you would want to pursue. Cybersecurity is a very broad and it will give you a 30,000ft view of what is out there.

    I passed the CompTia A+ and Network + over 25 years ago. Just enrolled in WGU for a degree IT and studying for CompTIA exams in 2024. Being 60 years old, it is ruff but hanging in there.

    So after this steps this win19 server is used like a volume license server? I can have a volume license for Office2021 and distribute it to other pcs or vms? And final question after activating volume license can the server be in offline environment or it needs to be connected to internet?
