The reason I’m interested is because as an HVAC tech, I cross paths with a lot of this stuff in BUILDING AUTOMATION SYSTEMS, also find it in the BUILDING SYSTEMS as in FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS and general BUILDING SECURITY SYSTEMS and ENERGY CONSUMPTION MONITORING …

Hey man i'm studying for my comptia a+ exam right now, are you using your certs for a job? I'm a trucker looking to move to a work from home career if i can. Wondering whats your thoughts on what to look for to start that up. Btw i think we have similar backgrounds in tech before taking the plunge to getting certs.

I've witnessed numerous individuals successfully transition from entirely different career paths into the tech industry, and I want to assure you that you can do it, too! I believe certifications play a significant role in this journey, but perhaps not for the reasons you might initially think.
When you come from a background quite different from tech, investing your time learning something new and then going the extra mile to become certified sends a powerful message to potential employers. They see someone who is not only capable of self-driven learning but also someone who possesses a genuine passion for technology and personal growth. Additionally, having those certifications provides tangible evidence of your newfound knowledge.
A+ is a great certification. It's an excellent choice to demonstrate your foundational tech skills. Once you have conquered A+, I would consider Security+. It's worth noting that Security+ is often required for certain levels of security clearance, making it a strategic choice for expanding your career opportunities.
Remember, your journey into the tech industry is possible and filled with opportunities for growth and success. Embrace the learning process, showcase your passion, and keep pursuing your goals - you've got this!

After getting this certification can you skip A + and go straight to Network + ?

    • @ITLumberjack

Yes you can! CompTIA doesn’t require you to take any of their certification in any particular order. The order they give is basically a suggestion. My first CompTIA certification was Network+.

@@ITLumberjack but where did you get your iT foundation knowledge? Were you already working in IT?
I am due to take the ITF soon but I don’t want to waste any more time. My goal is cybersecurity.

I had more than a decade of experience before taking a certification test. With that said experience doesn’t always equal a pass. It does help with troubleshooting but it doesn’t always help with knowing the terminology required to pass.
If something in cybersecurity is your goal, I would consider going straight to Security+ after the ITF+. It’s a certification that the DoD requires for security clearance and it is (in my opinion) the most valuable of the main CompTIA trio. If you feel like you have a gap in your knowledge base, you can always go back and get A+ and Network+.
The Security+ will also give you a better understanding of what pathway with in cybersecurity that you would want to pursue. Cybersecurity is a very broad and it will give you a 30,000ft view of what is out there.
