Exploring Scott Farm Orchard and Trying Their Delicious Apple Cider -- ”Weekends With Yankee”
Is anything more quintessentially New England than an heirloom apple orchard? In this season one segment from “Weekends with Yankee” (episode 105), we’re at Scott Farm Orchard in the picturesque Connecticut River Valley town of Dummerston, Vermont. Notable for being the filming location of "Cider House Rules" and the former residence of author Rudyard Kipling, the orchard is a haven for apple enthusiasts. Amy and Richard join self-proclaimed apple curator Ezekiel Goodband to learn about the varieties of apples, how to taste for ripeness, and the process behind the best cider. But beyond exquisite quality and flavor, we learn about the history and traditions of the farm and its cultural significance to the region, which could be the ripest lesson of all.

When you see the process you can understand that artists make a huge investment in their craft like time and supplies, and deserve every nickel, dime, and penny they ask for when selling their work.

We had stone walls surrounding and dividing the pastures and fields of our family farm in north central Pennsylvania. They were crudely built by generations of the men of my family from the rocks encountered and heaved up from the ground by the plow and frost. The farm passed out of the family when my dad decided not to accept it and it was sold. 85 acres with 150 years of family blood, sweat and toil lost to strangers. I remember well walking the pastures and orchard with the cousins and talking about the work that went into those walls...I'm now a senior myself and it still makes me want to cry when I think what we lost because my father had so little respect for history and family.

It was a Huron corruption of Anglais, the French word for the English. Anglais became Yengeez, which became Yankees.

There are claims that this etymology has been rejected, but I haven't seen any legitimate evidence for the rejection. On the other hand, I haven't seen any direct evidence for it either, only circumstantial evidence. But comparing the development of other words, such as Buccaneer, and Barbecue, it still seems the most likely development of the term. But, logical observation and comparative deduction doesn't mean you can't be dead wrong.
