    I’ve seen you mentioning growing new plants from the seeds you’ve collected from your plot. Like the turnips in this video. Now, turnips are a member of the Brassica family, and I’ve seen some other brassicas in flower on the plot if I’m not mistaken (and some may have bolted and flowered on neighbouring plots as well). Will these actually grow true? Or will these seeds turn into a surprise package of all kinds of hybrid brassicas?

    • @paulsavident
      @paulsavident Před 5 hodinami

      I've worked with fellow plotters in the past so that when we have been saving seeds nearby plotters have not let brassicas flower, and vice versa. 👍 However, there is always a chance of cross-pollination producing something horrendous, or something fabulous like when our Portuguese Cabbage and Dazzling Blue Kale crossed. 👍🤞👍

  • @tslinger21
    @tslinger21 Před dnem

    The ‘falling’ of the cinnabar moth caterpillar is actually something they do on purpose when they feel threatened. Lily beetles (and quite a few other small animals) apply the same tactics. Some even scream during their short fall, to warn their kindred of the impending danger. And their black and yellow colours are actually not camouflage but rather a warning to birds that they are poisonous. The ragwort contains a poison that the caterpillars store in their bodies over time. Ragwort is (mildly) poisonous for most animals. The bitter taste warns us not to eat it, and horses will usually not touch the plant when it grows in their field. It is dangerous for horses though when the plant ends up in their hay: the poison remains, but the bitter flavour gets drowned out.

      Buddleja davidii comes in different shapes and shades that hybridise quite happily. This could be ‘Cerise’, but might just as well be ‘Funky Fuchsia’ or just some self seeded variety. I’m sure Paul’s the only one that has a chance of knowing the answer to your question though 😉.

    What do you think about putting a single hole up on the side of the flooded plant trays and then bunging it up with a cork? That way you could just pull the cork and all the water would drain out then you just put the cork back in. Seems easier than taking all the pots out and dumping the water. Love this episode ❤

    We had almost 10 cm of rain last week tuesday after the 3.5 cm of rain on Monday. Flooding everywhere. It was like yours: went on for hours never letting up. Last time we had rain like this was July 2013. The difference is our weather is hot and humid so it's not pleasant to be working outdoors. We also had a mild, rainy winter and the lack of insects. Right now though there are thousands of tiny solitary bees collecting pollen from the dill and Anise Hyssop flowers. My plot is just bouncing with little pollinators. I grow a lot of native plants and also with my friends we have some rather extensive pollinator gardens. Last year we had many more bumblebees. Almost no butterflies this year though. We have more insects after a winter with good snow cover but that also results in more voles. This is the year of the rabbit. They like to eat crabgrass and now my baby endives. For the past three years we had bumper crops of tomatoes. Not this year. We did all the same things but the weather was too volatile and the terrible rain last week beat some of the leaves to death.

    • @paulsavident
      @paulsavident Před 4 hodinami

      The weather this year has certainly been less than helpful formour growing, and it's interesting that in terms of our subscribers it's similarly challenging around the globe. 😳

    • @gabriellakadar
      @gabriellakadar Před 3 hodinami

      @@paulsavident It was a fabulous year for lettuce. I had Kos lettuces that weighed over 1 kg. The cabbage is good. Leafy greens have been good except something skeletonized the red chard. No idea. Must be something noshing on them at night. We have Cucumber Wilt which you don't get. Next year we will grow cucumbers that are parthenogenetic (no pollination needed) and we have plans to use an old metal bed frame with springs and cover it with Lill curtains from IKEA. It's really terrible the cucumber beetles. I've learned that this problem is only in the northeast part of North America. We can't successfully grow cucumbers unless we create a structure that excludes the Cucumber beetles. It's always amazing how UK and west USA peeps can grow bumper crops of cucumbers and ours just die.
