Hi Dave. I picked this idea up from a Hornady video entitled, "Your groups are too small." You should watch it. The idea is that the larger groups will tell you more about how the rifle, ammo, and shooter are actually performing. And mean radius is more important than extreme spread. They have a video on that too. Thanks for watching, my friend.

    • @davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009

@@EverydayReloadingandShooting Yes, I watched it and far be it for me to disagree with the professional ballisticians. But 20 shot groups with larger bore rifles seems excessive but with lower pressure cartridges such as the .223/556 the 20-100 shot tests they recommend seems prudent. But just not for me when human error, barrel/chamber heat and powder fouling are more likely culprits of shot inconsistency when shooting that many rounds in one string. Besides the expense these days of components.

Interesting test, Dennis. But the barrels are likely different? Out of curiosity, did you let the barrel cool between shots? Also, you started with a clean barrel for each rifle I assume. My 223 Wylde bolt rifle likes Open Tip Match or BTHP rounds more than FMJ rounds. So we know that every rifle can like some bullets more than others. Instead of using the same ammo, why don't you test with each rifle's favorite ammo? It's just me giving you a hard time again LOL...

I’m having no good results with CFE223 & .223/5.56. This morning at the range, I shot 2 5-round groups using new Lapua brass, hand weighed charges of 24.8gr and 25.2gr CFE223 with Sierra 65gr Gameking. Bullets seated with Redding competition seating dies and lightly crimped. Standard deviation of 37.6 and 36.8. Extreme spread of 91.5fps and 87.5fps. Previous range sessions had standard deviation from a low of 9.6 to a high of 57.8… all with CFE223 and 62gr to 65gr bullets. Ruger mini14 with 16.5 barrel. Using the same Garmin chrony, my 10mm handloads using Power Pistol and 155gr XTP consistently show standard deviation of around 5 on 5 shot groups.

Used a RCBS "small base" die, and fully resized the cases. Removed the "primer crimp", scraped the primer pocket with a Lyman tool, and soaked the cases in one quart of distilled water and 1/2 teaspoon of Acetic Acid power I bought at WalMart (for one hour). Then shook the cases dry in a plastic colander, and put them in the oven at 350 degrees F for 1/2 hour. That is lot of work, but it got good results.

The Tikka is a T3x Lite in 270Win, so they don't really compare. So I found your comparison interesting. I did change the stock on my 6.5CM to the Magpul Hunter stock. If you have to make sure torque is set perfectly, you have a sick rifle. Probably a bedding issue. Also, most guys are only shooting 3 shot groups. 10 and 20 shot groups will tell a lot more about the shooter, rifle and load, than anything else will. I wouldn't expect stellar accuracy/precision with the bullet in this video. Grab some Sierra matchkings, or Hornady V-max or ELD match bullets, if you want to see what it will really do. Good video though. Tikka's will generally outshoot most production rifles, and even a lot of custom builds. Velocity too low for 75gn bullet. Optimal velocity and accuracy will likely be in that 2800fps range assuming 8-twist barrel. Consider moving up powder charge or selecting another power.

All my loads have been w H4350 or W760 using Hornady ELD Match projectiles. With 4350, 40.5g (and Ive tried from 38 to 40.8), I was recently able to get a 3-shot down to .338". Will move to 5 shot groups now that I have found a happy spot. Velocity was 2708 from a 26" barrel. Just recently found some Berger Hybrids 140g and look forward to trying those out. All brass was Hornady large rifle fired once then annealed which dropped my SD's by 1/2 to 1/3 of rounds without annealing. Just used a drill and propane torch counting to four. With better equipment, I pretty sure annealing would have resulted in more uniformity, but it's nice to try something out inexpensively before burning big bucks. Good luck!
