OHMYGOD HEY!
A few weeks ago, the nominations for the 2024 Tony Awards were announce, recognising some of the best of this year's Broadway Plays and Musicals.
While the nominated shows included many worthy productions, there were still many surprising omissions including closed shows such as How to Dance in Ohio, Harmony, Here Lies Love and The Cottage and some ongoing shows such as The Great Gatsby and The Heart of Rock and Roll.
Check out which performers, creatives and productions I thought got snubbed by this year's Tony Nominations...

    I've been going to Broadway shows since my Mom started taking me as a kid. So I've seen a LOT of shows. One of the best musicals I've ever seen is HERE LIES LOVE - not only of this season, but of ANY season. I completely understand why it wasn't nominated as Best Musical. But that doesn't change the fact that it certainly should have been.

    I really need your thoughts on Lempicka ASAP. I was already in New York with tickets to see it when they announced their closing and out of the 7 shows I saw on that trip, it was not my favorite but it's the one I've thought the most about since. I keep trying to put my finger on why this show out of the many this season had the most trouble finding its audience. It wasn't perfect but I think many of the critics missed the point of the show entirely and they are not the Tony voters as you said with Cabaret. I doubt it would have had a long life but I wish it would have stayed open long enough for the intended audience to see it, and sadly most of them never did. Could better marketing have helped keep it afloat, or a Best New Musical nom, or celebrity casting (though I really believe Eden was the right person for this role)? I still wonder

    i've seen this show twice already and i am 100% going to see it again. it is all the fun of (good) rom com films but with a really great score (AND, unlike most rom coms, a 3rd act 'breakup' that didn't annoy me at all. i think 'the argument' is so well written.) sam and dujonna's chemistry and ability to command the stage on their own and as a duo is fantastic!!

      also 17:50 we disagree on this point because oh my goodness dougal is the most AuDHD character i've ever seen. endless optimism and energy? not perceiving her disinterest? very specific movie knowledge? outwardly odd (at least to robin) closeness to his mum? that boy is nottttt neurotypical at all. i mean this all positively btw. it's probably accidental but he is amazing autism + adhd representation in my opinion

  • @stuartm6069

    Tony needs to have a category, for Ensemble cast in a musical. This would have solved the problem with Suffs. It would have freed up nominations for other deserving actors and actresses. Also you could put Gutenberg in this category and Merrily We Roll along, basically shows where all the characters have more or less of equal importance to the show.

      Wow, I could not disagree more with this take! The Great Gatsby score is the most forgettable I've ever heard. (It truly was robbed of a scenic design nom though.) The Notebook, on the other hand, is chock full of beautiful, memorable songs. It's just a pity that the score as a whole doesn't serve the story particularly well.

      @owenespejo6401 Před hodinou

      @@hollymcl The Great Gatsby score certainly isn't even in my top 50 scores, but this season, where you had pop writers who know nothing about writing songs for the theater trying to write for character, this was written by two people who have had successful Broadway scores in the past-- Amelie actually being one of the great scores of the last 10 years! So it easily stood out as the best. Not that musical theatre writing tenure means everything-- Lempika might be even worse a score than Notebook!

    Can you imaging if Diane Paulus had critiqued Sara POrkalob in this way in an interview, expressing her disappointment in their acting, their choices, their relevance? After all, Diane is doing a job like Sara, Diane doesn't need to be grateful for Sara, or for any of her collaborators, she can just trash them and their work in print. No. I think it's awful. Artists and all people are entitled to opinions, but there is a difference between having opinions and trashing a show that is currently running on Broadway.

    The fact that some of the New York critics were so pissy about being confronted with something just a little out of the norm for musicals, but perfectly suited to the medium it's depicting on Cabaret, like Julia Cheng's choreography, informed by her personal work, itself a part of club culture, tells me all about the openness displayed by New York critics. There are a couple of viral clips from the show, and that audiences instinctively understand what the movement work is saying, says a lot.

    Hello! Just wanted to give a little bit of what I've learned of Romeo & Juliet doing the play with a touring Shakespeare Festival for a couple years. Romeo & Juliet doesn't necessarily have to be about a "love surpassing all ages". For instance, when Romeo speaks of Rosaline, and then switches hard-core over to being crazy into Juliet, it isn't necessarily because Juliet is so much higher above Rosaline. It may just be because Romeo is in love with love. He's an angsty, poetic, young romantic...and maybe also kind of just a horny teenager. Over the years, we've sort of adopted this idea that Romeo & Juliet is the greatest love story of all time for some reason and that they are the perfect couple, but the structure of the story doesn't necessary support that... It's written to show two young, angsty people who fall head over heals really quickly and make really dumb, brash decisions in their infatuation, finally resulting in suicide. And maybe their love does grow throughout the story, but that doesn't mean it is unmatched or even that they're a good couple. Romeo & Juliet has a lot of humor in it. In fact, when it was first performed for Elizabethian audiences, the people were so shocked and disappointed at the ending being so sad (because everyone was laughing all the way through) that Shakespeare had to add a whole monologue at the beginning of the show to literally warn the audiences, "This is a play that's going to be really funny for a while, but it'll end sad, just fyi...." There is so much crude humor in the show, and some of the characters are such larger-than-life characters...There's even a lot of humor that has been lost through the ages. For instance, the name "Tybalt" was a famous, silly cat character in Elizabethian times. So, the fact that one of the most hot-tempered characters in the show was named "Tybalt" is frankly a joke in itself. Imagine today someone like Austin Butler playing some bad-boy swordsman named "Mickey Mouse". Point being...Romeo and Juliet is full of caricatures. And Romeo & Juliet's love in itself...sudden, unreasonable, between two teenagers that really have no clue what they're doing...could as well be a caricature in itself. Peace!
