it's always wild to me that people diminish or ignore technical awards cause there's certain set design, lighting and costume choices from plays I saw a decade ago that I still think about today. It can enhance the story and viewing experience so much.

CHIP ZEIN!!!!! YES!!! He deserves to win!
Too bad you haven't seen The Wiz. Lots of issues with that show (that I saw in LA), but you have missed the performances of Nichelle Lewis as Dorothy, Avery Wilson as the Scarecrow, Phillip Johnson Richardson as the Tin Man, Kyle Ramar Freeman as the Cowardly Lion, Deborah Cox’s Glinda, and Melody A. Betts as Aunt Em and later doubles as evil witch Evillene, and of course, Wayne Brady as The Wiz.
I think Here Lies Love might be stiffed because of the musicians union issue, just like Funny Girl was mostly stiffed because of Beanie.

Very much anticipating the Tony nominations. Really hoping for ties so we get 6 nominations in some categories. Won’t be able to follow it live.
I want Suffs to do well, as well as Merrily. I also expect The Outsiders to do well. Agree Stereophonic should do well. It would be great if Chip Zien got nominated!

I just saw on Broadway Lempicka and the next day i saw Water For Elephants. I am astounded how much i liked Lempicka AND how indifferent i felt about Water For Elephants. I think Lempicka is for younger people (the same people who are keeping Hadestown open) I think what we need are younger theater credics who actually love the theater. I hope in ten years the Menier Chocolate factory will do a revival of Lempicka and then Broadway & West End will appreciate it

I've seen most of the musicals and will see the rest (if they are still open) in June. Honestly -- ILLINOISE deserves every nomination and win it can gather (I saw the show both at the Armory and the St. James and will go again in June). The choreo is stunning, as is the sound, lighting and set. The richness that the new orchestrations bring to Sufjan Steven's music and the vocal and band performances were just amazing. The entire ensemble was beautiful to watch, but Ricky Ubeda and Ben Cook brought a lump to my throat. "We celebrate our sense of each other,
We have a lot to give one another."

I haven’t seen Cabaret yet, but I’m on team Merrily for Best Revival. That show is just SO GOOD!
I’m a little surprised neither of you mentioned Gatsby as a possibility for Best Choreography. It’s traditional, but so well written & beautifully performed. I haven’t seen Illinoise yet, so I’ll have to bow to your superior knowledge on that one for now.
For Best Musical my heart is with Suffs & Water for Elephants. I adored both shows.

Lovely breakdown! thank you guys for sitting through all that theater - I was looking back at what I have seen and I thought it was a substantial amount but now realize HOW MANY shows have actually opened, OH BOY. I’ll just say on Costumes - for me one of the top offenders in Lempicka were the costumes, the ensemble with clip-on-taffeta accents and some of Eden’s more signature looks that though impressively designed looked uncomfortable to wear and not the most flattering, and on Merrily - a great friend of mine whose been in wardrobe on Broadway and the Met, etc for decades, was going on and on how inaccurate some of those period choices were in that show, and how unflattering the fit was on Lesley’s outfits, even considering the character, enlightening for me! (And if it gets nominated for set I will riot, that production is great In spite of that high school production set).

Mickey Jo-forgive my intrusrion, but I just have to fawn on you a bit. Last week, I sat through your review of The Notebook-a show I had not really planned on seeing. Then I heard what you said, so I figured it was a great way to see Maryanne Plunket again (I adore her), and with the rave from you, I went. OMG. (Note, I'm a reformed theatre critic myself, so your words do carry some weight with me.) I was blown away by The Notebook. I went in figuring it was going to be some maudlin claptrap (with a Nicholas Sparks pedigree, it's an easy assumption to make). But I said to my friend (who had shoved me into see some real claptrap, Hell's Kitchen, a show I hated from beginning to end except for a couple of performances and NOT the leads, plus I don't like Alicia Keys), "If Mickey Jo is raving about it, how bad can it be?" I was absolutely blown away (almost as much as I was blown away by Here Lies Love-but let's not go there for now). So thank you for giving it the Mickey Jo Seal of Approval (is that a thing?). Just thought I'd let you know some of us to heed your advice.

    2 Noms I didn't hear mentioned:
    1) I know you all never saw it but I hope Once Upon a One More Time gets a nom for choreography. That show was DEEPLY flawed but the choreographers and dancers were phenomenal. There are rehearsal videos on YT for anyone curious.
    2) The set in I Need That was very cool (though very anxiety-inducing) and a huge part of the story.
Both at risk of being forgotten I think.

OUAOMT was not deeply flawed at all, people decided to hate it just because. At least it had a beautiful story unlike Hell's kitchen that has no plot but people love it. The musical will comeback one day and people will be like "oh wait, this was not bad at all".

I don't think OUaOMT will get a choreography nomination cause it can be seen as unoriginal, just copying the dancing in Britney's videos. If that show does manage any nominations, it'll most likely be for Jennifer Simard & possibly Justin Guarini (though he's more of a long shot).

    • @ThexImperfectionist
      @ThexImperfectionist Před měsícem

@@pablog5965 I saw it, and I disagree. The cast was great but the story was clumsily executed and so cheesy at times I rolled my eyes in the theatre. It benefited tremendously from all the details of Britney's conservatorship becoming public between when the show was originally planned to be staged and when it finally was. It made the story feel more poignant and personal to Britney if not to the characters. It was fun but the book left a lot to be desired for me.

My hot take and I will die on that hill is that I have seen Appropriate a large number of times and TBH Sarah Paulson really isn't that good. This is coming from someone who really rates her as a TV actress and was surprised by my experience, but i found her understudy at the Hayes far better in the role. The material admittedly doesn't give her the best to work with. IMO its an average play with truly excellent performances. She's probably a shoe in for the Tony though judging by how everyone seems to be wetting themselves over her on social media. TBH the standout adult performances in Appropriate were Corey, Michael and Natalie. And why oh why oh why does Michael Esper always get overlooked in shows? It's like the Oliviers for Glass Menagerie where everyone else except him got nominated and he played the main role in it!!

For those who've been to several of them, what are the Broadway theaters with the best bathrooms? I've heard women are in a bind in many of them due to age/design of the buildings. Have you ever thought twice about a show due to something like that, or is it just an annoyance?

    • @AKMorehouse

During intermission the bathrooms are crazy at every theater, to try avoid it I usually go straight to the bathroom when I enter the theater just before the show. Correct! The show, however, is spelt and pronounced Illinoise 🙂

Illinoise will probably win best musical. I saw it yesterday and really didn't care for it. If it were up to me I'd give best musical to Notebook or Hells Kitchen. I think Merrily is basically a lock for best revival and Stereophonic for best play.
