Ballet has been doing proshots for decades and it hasn't k1led the art. Musical theatre's refusal of it is pig headed and idiotic. It gives you advertising! It gives everybody involved extra revenue! It preserves the performances of every actor, including he ones not famous enough to go on tv! There is literally NO downside!

There's ONE "downside", and its an insanity that only exists in the minds of elitest assholes: if you provide proshots, The Poors will experience theatre, and these assholes think that theatre should only be experienced by people able to pay the in person ticket price + expenses to actually get there. They genuinely despise the thought of anyone financially unable to do that geting to have the same thing they do but in an accessible way. Its irrational, honestly hateful snobbery of the highest level. And when you're so snobbish that the BALLET INDUSTRY looks grounded and humble in comparison, you have truly gone through the looking glass and cannot be saved.

See also the success of NT Live for… 15? years now, and more recently NT at Home. If anything it's kept me more engaged with theatre in the periods I can't be there physically (*gestures vaguely at 2020* but not only that), so will be more keen to go to something when I *am* able.

Hi MickeyJo! The Play That Goes Wrong was filmed in Chicago for two days back in 2022 after their limited reunion run in the UK. Some fans were able to see it when they were in Chicago and confirmed that it was filmed. However, when asked at stagedoor, Jonathan Sayer said that the proshot will not be released until after tptgw finishes, which as you said, will mostly be a very long time

I'm so happy to hear this. I missed out on the chance to see the original cast the first time and when they did it recently, it was too far away. I've seen other casts do it and I'm a big fan of the recorded version of Peter Pan and the other BBC stuff they did. I feel lucky that I live in London and can watch TPTGW whenever I want to but I really want to watch the original cast do it. I also missed out on watching The Comedy About a Bank Robbery and it sucks that there's no way to experience that now.

@@joevictor53 I mean, I'm pretty sure Bloomsbury still sells copies of the script for Bank Robbery, so that's one way to experience it.
As for the original show, it has a bit of an improv aspect to it, so I don't think a proshot of it would harm it too much, if it were released while the stage versions are still running.

Shows get recorded for archives as well - I've seen a couple of shows where there's been filming going on and been told "No, just for the archives, not public". One of those times was kinda - well, the tech to my untrained eye looked like decent hobbyist kit, but another was definitely professional shot! I was also at the Rocky Horror recording with David Bedella, that was a lot of camera crew from my angle!
Producers need to... *ahem* update their outlook on the value of proshot recordings! The success and longevity of the shows where recordings are easily available speaks for itself, a good recording encourages sales not suppresses them!
My favourite proshot DVD that I treasure is Boy George's Taboo - it feels like a licensed bootleg, puts you right into the immersive environment. It wouldn't work for all shows but one with no fourth wall like Taboo, it's amazing. Plus the cast was fantastic, the music is wonderful... It was the kind of show that you almost had to experience in person, but the pro-shot makes a very good second!
Also, I may be showing my age, but this is the kind of topic where I REALLY value physical media! I want DVDs! I want to hold the show in my hands and know I can watch it again whenever I want, not held to ransom by streaming services!

I cannot stress how much I NEED Pro-Shots of plays and musicals, especially when going to London/NYC/seeing the tours is not an option.
I do believe the momentum for Pro-Shot releases dropped after the troubled recording of Diana on Netflix and the closure of Come From Away but I hope Waitress and TLBT might help it gain momentum again.
I think another problem is the marketing of it, streaming platforms don't usually go as hard on marketing as cinematic releases do, so unless you're already aware of it, you probably won't notice it happening, it also ties to the whole Mean Girls musical movie thing and how people are usually a lot colder towards musicals.

I really wish they'd release the Between the Lines proshot -- I loved that show.

    • @callalily3994

If you look on Arielle Jacobs' CZcams page, she posted a bunch of videos for many of the songs from Between the Line, and the videos with them definitely use clips from the proshot. (They're not the same as the promotional footage of some of those same songs that was released while the show was still running -- all of that footage was filmed with a swing playing Allie, but the videos that she posted have the principal cast.)
I'd definitely recommend watching the video for "A Whole New Story." I saw that show shortly after I watched your reaction video to the Cinderella concept album, and I remember thinking, "This is what he meant with that comment about 'I want to go on a journey' in that video." It's just a great example of character development through a song, and Arielle, who had been playing that character in workshops for something like five years by that point, portrays that brilliantly. (She was probably a bit too old to play a teenager by the time it got to Off-Broadway -- you saw her as Imelda Marcos about a year later -- but I'm glad that they kept her in the show anyway, because she was fantastic in that role.)

It should've been taken more seriously even with Ansel Elgort (who was miscast even if he wasn't a creeper).

The only things "extra" that wasn't mentioned is that rumor was Disney is the one to have the rights to Between The Lines. With them structuring Disney+ with Hulu content who knows what their plan is but I feel it's something they will dust off the shelf just a matter of when. I feel Frozen won't be released until maybe a bit closer to Frozen 3 to help fill the gap & also hold off until it's done touring the US. Girl From The North Country I feel will depend on the film as to who releases it but I think it's going to be a BroadwayHD pick up if I had to guess. HBO & Jersey Boys I feel may be a lost cause & that scares me because it's something that would have done very well for them. Six is still a mega blockbuster so I feel they locked in the filming with the original Queens just to have it done & won't touch it for at least a few years.

As someone who is a theatre fan & a Jonas brothers fan(Nick is how I became a fan of theatre tbh) I've been waiting for an update on when Jersey Boys is coming. I met Andy Karl in Melbourne in Feb after Groundhog Day but I blanked and forgot to mention/ask about it😂
I know a few Jonas brother fans got to see jersey boys pro shot as Nick invited some fans but yeah they have only said it's great no actual spoilers or anything big I don't know how many saw it but probably only a hand full of people. This was like 2 years ago maybe. I tweet about this pro shot every few weeks😂

There was a partial live audience with a blue screen for more to be added in later (this was back when they were very strict about covid vaccinations). The JB pro shot is my white whale! So many great alumni in it and even Michael Urie as Bob Crewe. The fact that both Jonas and Urie (names known to non-theatre people) are in it and yet it still hovers in the ether is WILD to me.

I saw Operation Mincemeat on December 18th and there were camera crews in both boxes filming the show. Now, I believe this was just for b-roll footage for the 2-minute documentary that appeared on the Big Night of Musicals TV show in January. HOWEVER....... footage of the entire show could well be out there

I was at both Aladdin in 2019 and SIX in 2022! Very cool experience both times. Aladdin filmed their pro-shot after the final public performance with a mix of cast from around the world. SIX filmed the week after the pro-shot, across four days as i went to a show on the Wednesday, where the public ballot was for the end of the week. Very excited to see both in the future.

Proshots make so much sense because people can discover a show and fall in love with it, I watched Newsies on Disney plus during Covid and fell in love with the show and knew I had to go see it when it came to London. I would never have done that without the proshot! And so many people don’t have access to the west end or broadway so having recordings opens it up to a wider audience

Mr. Saturday Night was released on the Broadway HD Streaming Platform. It's very good. The Emojiland was also released on that platform for a time - as I didn't like the show I didn't watch it.
PS Just wanted to let you know how much I love your videos. Your passion for theatre is so refreshing and infectious! Keep up the good work! I only wish I was closer to London so that I could come see you live! Good luck with that as well. I've been a professional performer my entire life and was lucky enough to study at CalArts & AMDA NY (a million years ago - well the 80s). I spent my 20s in NYC and go back all the time as I'm a Tony voter - so I must. Heheheeh. Hugs to Aaron. M'wah - M. 💋❤

You are so right! All people should have access to these shows not just those in London etc. One problem is that companies are trying to destroy hard media and force everyone on to streaming - then charge them a fortune. The fabulous new movie All of Us Strangers won’t have a DVD release because of Disney and thus its potential audience is massively restricted.

@@MickeyJoTheatre The Hamburg version was made to tour, or at least be efficiently transferred to other German cities like Oberhausen, hence its "flat" proscenium (like the USA/Australia tour), truncated ice bridge, and mini ice stairs (that were removed from the production and repurposed for TV promotional performances, and replaced with the "full" ice stairs we see in the London production). The official Frozen London Instagram account has responded to a few comments saying that they do not intend to tour the show, but I can't help but wonder why they can't at least tour the Australia tour set, if not the Hamburg set?

I hope pro shots just become part of the production in stage musicals. I know there would be a lot legally to work out but if its just part of the process it would become easier and an expected step. Wishful thinking perhaps but I'd rather support the artists involved rather than seeking out 'slim tutorials' of shows no longer running.
