Ironically, Puss in Boots:The Last Wish actually had way more references to fairytales and Disney callbacks without being too annoying about it. Magic nanny bag, poison apples, walking broom, Jiminy Cricket, heck even a cameo of Cinderella’s glass slipper, all present and were fun Easter Eggs to find.
Bonus for Perrito being the ‘animal sidekick’ that is actually developed well and doesn’t detract from the scene like Valentino the goat did. Plus, MAGIC WISHING STAR being front and focus and shows off its immense power even without granting a single wish. So failure on Wish right there.
And I do love the shoutout to Trolls 3 😂 That movie played with nostalgia (early American boy bands) much better and had a banger soundtrack that still lives for free in my brain (and I don’t even charge it rent 😉). While I’m more into the protagonists than Velvet and Veneer, I do love how ‘extra’ they are as villains and their spaghetti body designs allows a lot of room for creativity and expression.
The viewer can also see how much more impactful their actions have on the characters. Along with the obvious height difference, there’s such a coldness with Velvet whenever she steals Floyd’s and the other’s essence and displays such a blatant disregard for them every time she interacts with them. Excess shaking, overusing the spray, amused when they attempt to bargain for their release, she’s really a despicable character and is soooo vain and selfish 😂
That’s the level of horridness King Magnifico needed to be! Honestly, if one were to pit Velvet and King Magnifico together, she would totally wipe the floor with him verbally and he probably wouldn’t be a able to get a spell in cause she would steal whatever is available and easy to grab and take him by surprise. 😂

The Wish was so bad that many suspected that the movie was written and generated by AI. However, this is apparently not the case, instead the film was re-written and re-edited many times before it took its final shape. For example, Asha's romance with the star boy and the queen's villainess were unfortunately elements that didn't pass the approval of Disney's jury of sensitivity readers. And while in some cases sensitivity readers can be useful, such as in consulting, in this case its use ate away a lot from the film. However, I would still be interested to know what the jury's reasons for these changes were, because it is important data and part of the film's development history.

@CarrieTooTired definitely! It also makes Magnifico a bigger threat and links him and Amaya to the main characters in a natural way. It gives the story higher stakes, especially for starboy, making the end of the movie much more believable. There's an animatic made by Ariel Samuel about the end, where they put star boy in. It fixed the whole scene and complimented the song in a much better way!

@@luizaraposo2320 Stealing a star also doesn’t take away Magnifico’s agency as a character like an evil book possessing him does. The first one is an active choice he made to gain unimaginable power, but the second one seems to happen to him like he’s Gollum drawn to his “precious,” which could still be really interesting but the devil’s in the details and there was virtually no progression getting him from “well-meaning leader who wants to do right by his kingdom” to “power-hungry, mustache-twirling supervillain.”
In the end I kind of felt bad for him getting locked up in the mirror when as far as I was aware, he was a good king made the victim of a magical curse. The same could be said for Gollum and getting possessed by the ring but at least he actually did truly heinous things to justify being a villain but all Magnifico did was make a few people sad, I guess? Honestly, King Triton acted more villainous than him when he trashed Ariel’s grotto (and he’s not supposed to be a villain).

@colbystearns5066 That's a really good point! It felt to me that they put the book part cause they didn't have a good excuse to make him a villain, and there wasn't enough time in the movie. Idk. It just felt lazy and unfair. For me, it actually makes the queen look like a twist villain who took the opportunity to get the throne just for her.

@@luizaraposo2320It’s fascinating how Queen Amaya was originally meant to be a villain, then was turned into a hero but they forgot to take out the parts where she’s scheming like a villain with the frickin’ magic hand oil(!!!). I’m amazed hardly anyone brings that up in all of the reviews I’ve seen because it’s so infuriating and contrived.
Like did Magnifico ever know about that stuff but just chose not to use it because he’s an idiot who wanted to turn evil or merely forgot to apply it or did he really not know anything about it and Amaya hid it from behind his back knowing he’d fall victim to the book’s curse and she’d be there to take over the kingdom from him? This feels like the movie that keeps on giving with how much wrong there is with it.

Okay, hear me out: If Evil Magnifico wanted to mess with Asha, hurt her in the finale in front of everyone, instead of dragging HER up onto the stage, drag her *Sabino* up there (instead of her or with her) like a perversion of the Wish-granting ceremony Asha wanted for his 100th birthday the whole time. Really rub salt in the wound that Magnifico will NEVER grant Sabino's Wish.
And Asha looks at Sabino and says something like "Saba, I never should have tried to get your wish granted... (gasp, whaaat?) I wanted to become Magnifico's apprentice to help you because... *you are my greatest inspiration!* But you don't need *me* to grant your wish. You don't need _HIM_ (Magnifico) to grant your wish either. *_You,_** Only YOU, can make **_YOUR_** wish come true! ... and you've already showed me you can."*_ And Asha's gentle peptalk is what prompts SABINO to sing the reprise to the people and INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION CROWD TO TAKE THEIR WISHES BACK, demonstrating that everyone has the power in them to try and make their wish come true, and the best way to help guide someone to their dream is with understanding and support, (not just handwavy cheat magic.)

About the scene you missed: it was a scene where Amalia prepared a "potion" for Magnifico. He used it (along with some chants in Latin) to create a sort of "rope of light" to drag down the star from the sky. It was quite dramatic.
In the scene, he fails and has an outburst of rage and frustration where he attempts to eat wishes out of spite. There was a really cool interaction between him and Amalia, who was trying to calm him down and stop him from devouring three wishes:
A: "this is your favourite cook's wish!"
    KM: "There are other cooks".
A: "This is your best guard's...and please, this is my mother's!"
KM: "Well, in that case..."(Magnifico tries to sneak it)
    A:"Please, be serious!"

I'm 89% sure that the spiderverse screwed Wish over. No fault of its own. It was just too good. Also there's no fairy tale to retell. The foundation of all the classics is that they are retelling a story. Even the Lion King is just Hamlet with some african myths mixed in. The key ingredient in the disney formula is to dust off an old fairy tale to make the base.
Edit: I found one. The Six Ravens/swans because it includes 7 siblings and the main character is the daughter. She gets help from a star.

spider-verse’s success definitely changed the animation game, but I think the animation style in wish was a strong case of “interesting ideas, bad execution”- they probably didn’t want to do a drastic change for the “average moviegoer” to not recognize it as a “disney movie” 🤪 i think disney’s talents are capable enough to create a fairytale (from the deleted scenes we got at least), but the bottom line is that the higher ups didn’t care- they clearly just wanted something really quick and safe w/ enough sparkles to make people want to watch other disney movies afterwards 😞

The problem isn't that pop music artists can't do music for Disney movies. The problem is that they SHOULD make their music more THEATRICAL because it's basically animated theatre.
And also depends in the context.
F.e Treasure Planet having more of a rock sound makes sense because the ambient isn't "magic fairytale" it's sci-fi and steampunk.
And Elton John didn't made pop for The Lion King. He did what the movie needed.
The problem is that these NEW SONGWRITERS think more of the song itself than how it integrates with the whole product.

My question is. Why couldn't Starboy been a human, shapeshifter, AND mute. Humans don't have to talk. It would've separated him from genie, if that's what they were worried about. It could even be a callback to the little mermaid, SINCE THEY LOVE THEIR CALLBACKS, THEY COULD'VE LEANED INTO THAT. Imagine the potential of a mute magical character speaking through so many magical means. A call back to kiss the girl, maybe??? (like Asha falls first and wants to express it to him but can't for whatever reason, and he wants to tell her he likes her too but doesn't really know what to do about love because he's not use to being a human, etc etc) What if Magnifico captured Starboy and locked him down?? what if they inverted the damsel in distress trope with that??
The lack of human Star, as well as "this song can be applied to any situation so it can be played on the radio" songs, shows that the "heart" of this movie is just a money bag.

I want to know when Disney will stop slapping together thoughtless concepts in a last minute rush because they aren't giving their teams enough time to iron out kinks (in every area, apparently). From so many behind the scenes of recent movies from them, it's clear that crunch is HEAVILY weighing on everyone in the studios. There are so many concepts and things they cut and then give no time to properly rework, and it's dropped their quality down the drain.
We know they have the money to make it work. Stop relying on name and nostalgia alone and let the artists (of all mediums) you've hired for your movies actually have enough time to breathe. Believe it or not, selling your cute sidekick merch works a lot better when the movie they're attached to is actually something people enjoy watching.

concept art is good bcs you see the actual creativity from the artists without yet getting strangled by corporates and ceos

Once upon a studio, a 8 minutes short has: more talent, more creativity AND respect for animation than Wish. More emotion too! I almost cry when i saw Mickey thanking Walt for all theses years of magic and dreams. It was adorable 🥰This short is, to me, the real 100 years celebration of the compagny.

What infuriates me is the costume designs. They dont tell me much about the characters or culture (But hey, havent watched the movie).
As you said about magnifico his design is semetrical and screems perfection, enven his slicked back hair (It would be cool to see a shot where his hair gets messy and he huffingly shuves it back in place.). I also like that his colour palet is white - useually having connotations of purity light or hope, which is a stark contrast to the "Villan" role he "plays" which (would have) been and interesting irony for the veiwers.
But asha? What even is she wearing? And i do not see any cultural anything from her outfit. Furthermore she just blends in to the backg characters, kinda forgetable and nlt really what you want for a main character. Remember encanto and the culture there? On top of that infeel like Ashas hair moves very wierdly and more in a block than actual hair strands. And we know disney can do this, the did it with mirabel, Rapunzel. Missed opportunity.

Magnificent did the hair brush 2(?) times if I remember correctly 🤔 once in the beginning when he helped Asha w/ the security spell and once after “this is the thanks I get” so the perfectionist in him is there they just didn’t integrate it into his personality and opted in for vanity instead 😔 I heard someone said he switched roles w/ Amaya somewhere during preproduction and I kinda see that in his design, if anything they should’ve just changed him back and make him regret using the book imo
I think Asha is Afro-Latina??? I just know rosas is supposed to be in the mediterranean sea and the citizens are all immigrants 🤷‍♀️ but yeah the purple only makes sense when she’s standing w/ the teens bc it’s a rainbow color scheme

Yeah, the design also bothers me because I'm from Spain and I know it was suppose to be base on our middle ages, wich is such a cool period. It's often refered to as the three cultures because musulims, christians and jewish people lived together (before the Inquisition), and you can still walk through some cities and tell where each group lived by the architecture. It was such a blend of cultures, wich would work perfectly in a story where the concept is people of all the world came to the kingdom, but they made it feel soo bland. I've heard that Asha is suppose to were purple to reflect her north-african heritage, but there is nothing to show that this is kingdom made up by people from all over the world.

@@CarrieTooTired ive been watching a couple other wish videos all day today. asha is moreso afro-hispanic, since afro-latina would be like latin america, and shes in spain i think. the purple was because that had to do with her amazigh heritage and was supposedly mentioned in the art book

That’s because the song “at all cost” was originally for Asha and the Starboy and was a love duet with each other, but when they changed the story, they kicked out the Starboy and just change minor things in the song the song, again, it sucks because the original plot they had for this was much better than what we got.😒😔

Wish constantly tries to appear diverse without ever bothering to actually to characterise, flesh out or center any of the characters that are usually underrepresented. But the best version of this was sitting right in front of them !!
It’s so weird hearing concept artists talk about how Starboy couldn’t at once be a ‘mime’ character and humanesque. Like, deaf people who choose not to speak .. exist !?? U can ? Take advantage of Disney’s catalogue of globally-known iconography to create a sort of universal sign language ?? It would be inventive and unique and striking and resonate with deaf ppl irl and it would hav been better in every conceivable way ..?? Head hurts

I think you're confusing "deaf" with "mute" here. Like, I know there is some overlap with the whole "not speaking" thing, but they are two *very* different afflictions. Starboy would have been mute, not deaf, since clearly he could hear the other characters talk.

@@bobbobbobbobbohhh right yeah, sorry. I meant to write that he could have been one of the kinds of deaf ppl that prefer not to speak. It would have made loads of opportunity for Asha to be the ‘visually expressive’ type they clearly really wanted her to be, in a way that didn’t feel clumsy and forced + Starboy gets an underrepresented reason for preferring to shapeshift than speak
