    OHMYGOD HEY!
With National Theatre Live having recently celebrated a significant milestone: their 100th broadcast of a live show, I'm recounting the one hundred pieces of theatre that they shared along the way.
For over a decade, they've been sharing productions like Fleabag, One Man Two Guvnors, Follies and more featuring stars such as Jodie Comer, Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Hiddleston, Jonathan Bailey and Sir Ian McKellen.
Check out today's historical documentary to learn more about the history of National Theatre Live as well as how it impacted the theatrical upbringing of yours truly...

Thank you so much for this glorious retrospective! NT at Home is honestly one of the hand full of things that got me through the early days of the pandemic. As a theatre artist living and working in the USA, it was wonderful to have access to those shows on CZcams. I wish that the USA took as much pride in the arts as the UK and Europe! My workplace (a large university) has given us access to many of the past NT Live productions thought the Library and I watch them often. As for my favorite, it has to be Small Island!

I love NT Live so much. It's not that there isn't a thriving theatre scene here, it's just that it's hard for me to enjoy much as I don't understand Polish! So this allows me to keep up with theatre while abroad.

This program is so iconic and I love how it has made theatre so accessible in the UK and abroad!

I had heard of National Theatre Live, but I did not know that it only started in 2009. And I also think as a German I cannot really find these productions anywhere. I know sometimes there were shown in a few movie theatres here, but never anywhere near me.

I've only seen one NT Live broadcast (Follies), but I watched everything they put on CZcams. That led to me being an NT At Home subscriber. Since I live in the US, it's the only access I have to these amazing shows.

I'm so grateful that these theatrical experiences are available online and that I can access them and enjoy them in Canada. They certainly helped during the lockdown and they continue to allow me to enjoy shows I would never get to see otherwise!

All My Sons really stands out to me as one of the best plays they broadcasted. I saw it with family when it was streamed in cinemas, knowing nothing about the story at all, but I remember just completely sobbing. It's so incredible that the National Theatre gives people the opportunity to see their shows - I never would have seen half the shows I have seen without it! I even went to see All About Eve because I saw the broadcast!

What an amazing recap of the NTLive history, I'm suprised at how many of those productions I had seen, my first was Frankenstein and most recent was the repeat of Vanya last night. I have too many favorites to list, I agree Skylight was a theatrical masterclass, Curious Incident was pioneering but Angels in America was some of my favorite hours spent inside a theatre. I'm so grateful that NTLive exists, its a way of spreading theatre to the provinces and capturing a moment that would otherwise be lost. Thankyou

What an absolutely fantastic recap Mickey! It took me far too long to make my first visit to the National - it was actually once I’d started teaching and I took my students to see A Taste of Honey (another incredible set!) and do a backstage tour. I’ve seen many of the NT Live productions over the years. Notable ones I saw in person include Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Bridge (always standing!), Angels in America, Everyman and All About Eve. And War Horse and Curious Incident I saw in different productions, as well as their NT Live incarnations. The CZcams offerings during 2020 kept me sane and I was so grateful for them. I live in Ireland now, and would need to travel two hours to get to my nearest cinema that shows them, so I think I now really need to invest in their streaming service and get caught up on what I’ve missed!

Thanks for the history. This needs to happen in 🇺🇸 too!
Producers need to talk to National Theatre to get advice on filming and start doing this. At least Purlie Victorious will be on PBS soon.

Loved this! Got hooked on NTLive in the US with One Man Two Governors and have been lucky to see a number of these. The Kitchen might have been my favorite- remarkable. I am so excited to make my first actual visit to the National Theatre next month and will be seeing London Tide. I know nothing about the show but know the quality will be top notch.

I think I really got into pro-shots because of NTL. I had to watch a live production as part of each of my college theatre courses, and pro-shots counted. The first ones I remember watching in movie theaters were “Frankenstein” and Hytner’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream.” I remember being REALLY blown away by “Midsummer.” Fortunately after that I found out my college not only had access to NTL shows but also RSC shows. I watched quite a number that peaked my interest from my undergrad to graduate years. Since then I’ve been looking at websites like PBS Great Performances, Netflix, Disney+, and even Tubi for pro-shots. Thank you, NTL!

Brilliant video! Thanks to the NT live steams and also the movie theatre showings I have enjoyed many plays that I would not have had the opportunity to see. Most recently saw Motive & The Cue and Dear England at Picturehouse .. loved them both.

I've caught a dozen of these. While I don't always love the plays themselves, I love the communal experience of watching the screenings with fellow theater fans. Their "Angels in America" would probably be my favorite. I have mixed feelings on Andrew Garfield's work but Nathan Lane and Russell Tovey were excellent and made me hear the text in new ways.

I first saw NTLive with Frankenstein, in New York. I always find it funny that half the audience treats it like theater (deadly quiet, applause at end) and half treats it like the movies (munching on popcorn, leaving the second it ends). I continued seeing broadcasts through the years, and when I went to London, I had to see a show at the National Theater. This was March 2020, so I saw The Welkin right before everything went to hell. I know that show had been intended for broadcast but didn't get the chance. During the pandemic, I was watching on youtube every week--one of the things keeping me going was my date with theater each Friday. When they announced NTatHome, I was like, this is for me. I've watched everything on the service--at some point it became a project to watch and review (on my friends-locked blog with a half dozen friends subscribing) every single play. I agree with you--A View from the Bridge is absolutely one of the best. My personal favorite is this version of Twelfth Night. I have to say, though--the American accents are always a little bit cringey. Thank you for this summary! It just shows how many other things they have in the archive that they haven't released on the service! I know some of those are rights issues (curse Straight Line Crazy for not being available to stream in the US--it's about New York!), but I keep hoping all the other shows will make it onto the service at some point.

My first NT Live was also Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch as the creature. I think it was a matinee rerun. Saw it on a whim and never looked back. I've always loved theatre and can get to London maybe once or twice a year if I'm lucky, so it's so nice to get the opportunity to see good shows with the stars rather than the second rate touring casts or more likely not at all.

@@emhu2594 That definitely can happen. I'm all for touring productions but it's not fair that if you live more than an hour from London that's all you get. Why shouldn't we get to see Frances De La Tour and Maggie Smith on stage.

The play they produced on the Labor and Tory parties( forgot the name) was thrilling. Wished they brought that for a limited run at the Beaumont. That space would have fit that play like a glove.

My favorites have included ANGELS IN AMERICA, BLUES FOR AN ALABAMA SKY, and THE HABIT OF ART. (Least favorites include Frankenstein, Streetcar Named Desire [not sure what they were thinking with the set] and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof [I'm not a prude but was the prolonged nudity really necessary? And Big Mama was an acid trip].)
