    Tony needs to have a category, for Ensemble cast in a musical. This would have solved the problem with Suffs. It would have freed up nominations for other deserving actors and actresses. Also you could put Gutenberg in this category and Merrily We Roll along, basically shows where all the characters have more or less of equal importance to the show.

      For Six too. It's such a shame they went unrecognized because the Tonys wouldn't individually nominate all 6 and couldn't figure out which actresses to single out (which would have been worse and anathema to the message of the show anyway).

    The fact that some of the New York critics were so pissy about being confronted with something just a little out of the norm for musicals, but perfectly suited to the medium it's depicting on Cabaret, like Julia Cheng's choreography, informed by her personal work, itself a part of club culture, tells me all about the openness displayed by New York critics. There are a couple of viral clips from the show, and that audiences instinctively understand what the movement work is saying, says a lot.

    So sorry Liam Pearce didn’t get a nomination. Neurodiversity is still grossly underrepresented on commercial stages and this would have been a major win and an important step forward ❤️

    IMHO Lempicka should have been nominated for best new musical. I loved the set the score and of course the performances some of which were acknowledged. Possibly a nomination would have kept it running long enough for it to have found the audience I think it deserved

    You have seen more than I have, but biggest disappointments were the miss by Chip Zien and other actresses in Suffs.
    Was very surprised that Gatsby was not nominated for Scenic Design even though the projections malfunctioned multiple times in Act 1. Less surprised by choreography exclusion for Gatsby. It was still pretty traditional and the shows nominated are just more interesting.
    I will see Tommy soon so will be able to form an opinion afterward about the snubs, although definitely thought Ali Louis Bourzgui would likely get nominated based on other nominations he got from other entities.
    I am curious what you thought of Lempicka given its imminent closing. Looking forward to the remaining reviews.
    Fingers crossed for Suffs and Merrily at the Tony’s.

      I agree about Chip and the Suffs cast. It breaks my heart that Chip continued to be snubbed. That was a tour de force. And I fear Suffs won’t win it all though they should. They could have filled the featured actress category completely. Really rooting for Suffs and Merrily too.

    I saw The Great Gatsby a few weeks ago, and even though I do agree it wasn't as deep or intellectual as many people (including myself) would have hoped, and the score/songs aren't mind blowing, I was so so so completely shocked they didn't get more nominations. Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada were FANTASTIC!!! Not to mention some of the hottest names on Broadway rn so for them not to get nominated is shocking. And seeing the set and lighting live I was even more shocked they didn't get nominations either. The set was INCREDIBLE, absolutely fabulous and stunning. Same for the lighting design.
    I was also absolutely heartbroken for Harmony, I thought that entire cast was way too talented to he completely ignored like that

    One of the best musicals I've ever seen - not only of this season, but of ANY season - is HERE LIES LOVE . I completely understand why it wasn't nominated as Best Musical. But that doesn't change the fact that it certainly should have been.

  • @LightningRound1st

    I loved The Wiz. I was really hoping Phillip Johson Richardson (The Tinman) would be nominated. I thought he was one of the best in the cast. While I didn't love Tommy, I was shocked that Ali Louis Bourzgui (Tommy) wasn't nominated--Broadway debut and carrying the entire show was worthy of a nomination! It was disappointing to not see Alex Moffet or Dana Steingold nominated. Both did excellent work.

    I really need your thoughts on Lempicka ASAP. I was already in New York with tickets to see it when they announced their closing and out of the 7 shows I saw on that trip, it was not my favorite but it's the one I've thought the most about since. I keep trying to put my finger on why this show out of the many this season had the most trouble finding its audience. It wasn't perfect but I think many of the critics missed the point of the show entirely and they are not the Tony voters as you said with Cabaret. I doubt it would have had a long life but I wish it would have stayed open long enough for the intended audience to see it, and sadly most of them never did. Could better marketing have helped keep it afloat, or a Best New Musical nom, or celebrity casting (though I really believe Eden was the right person for this role)? I still wonder

    Apologies in advance for the pedantry, but an important part of the snubs conversation isn't just who was left out, but who got in that shouldn't have. If all these "snubs" had gotten in, we'd have a video's worth of more egregious snubs. That said, I did love hearing a rundown of some of your faves-- can't wait to see the more detailed reviews from your recent trip! And ditto that George Abud would have been worthy of a nomination (haven't seen The Outsiders, Cabaret, or BttF yet to say who shouldn't have gotten in, but maybe one of them? BVD was amazing and Radcliffe the best of the Merrily trio... I said what I said). Also in agreement with you that Steve Carrell wasn't actually snubbed... he was just outclassed, even within his own production. (I'm eager to see more William Jackson Harper!)

    • @WhenNerdsAttack
      @WhenNerdsAttack Před 2 měsíci +1

      I have to say as someone who saw George Abud not only in Lempika, but as Nixon (!!) in the Hunter S Thompson musical, he has such a distinctive voice that I find just so interesting and lacking in regular Broadway stuff, and his acting is totally up to par with those nominated--I hope he gets the chance to come back to Broadway and be up for a nomination again

  • @WhenNerdsAttack
    @WhenNerdsAttack Před 2 měsíci +2

    I was incredibly bummed about George Abud. As someone local to La Jolla who has had the chance to see him in multiple rolls here, I find his singing/performances to be *so* compelling, and he really sells his roll in Lempicka--I was shocked he didn't get nominated.

    Here are my opinion for tony awards snubs. Greyhouse Tatiana Masley & Laura Metclaf. Best new play and scenic design for scott pask. For JaJa African Hairbraiding they got sub of an actress nom, they also had music in their show. Heart of Rock N Roll Corey Cott, McKenzie Kutz should have gotten a nom instead of Maryanne Pluckett. Back to the Future for Casey, Dole, Liana Hunt, and also Best New Musical. Lempicka def costume design. Great Gatsby Jeremy Jordan instead of Eddie and Eva instead of Gayle. The Cottage Laura Bell Bundy, Lili cooper and best new play.
    I'm rooting for Hell's Kitchen to win best new musical and Jaja best new play, Eden and Maleah, Hell's Kitchen best choregraphy, shoshana and amber. Might not watch the tony awards since we know who will win already.

    First of all, I apologize for sounding like a "know it all" correcting you on your pronunciation of Illinoise. I failed to realize there was an "e" on the end of the name, which means you did pronounce it correctly.
    I think this year's Tony Awards shows there are many great show on Broadway that don't get nominations. Just because the show didn't get a nomination doesn't mean it's not worth seeing. I saw the revival of Spamalot in January and it was SOOOO much fun, but it didn't even get a revival nomination. Several nights later I saw BTTF and was blown away! One nomination? Again, SO MUCH FUN, and the special effects (especially the car) were pretty crazy! No nominations for lighting, and other visuals that brought the car to life? Many good performances, but Likes was exceptional as Marty McFly (Batrt wasn't on that evening). Trying to put his own self into the character as well as somewhat channeling Michael J. Fox was impressive.
    It would be interesting to know the politics behind the Tonys. It's sad that many good shows that don't get the Tony bump are destined to close early. Thanks for your very informative videos.

    Everything I’ve heard about Heart of Rock and Roll praises its cast, so I was surprised not to see Corey Cott and McKenzie Kurtz get nominated for Best Leading Actor/Actress. Other upsets to me include Casey Likes for BTTF, Jeremy+Eva for Gatsby, and Ali Louis Bourzgui for Tommy. I was also shocked to not see Set, Costume, and Choreography for Gatsby, because everything online that I’ve seen has been fantastic. There was also no Lighting and Sound design for Tommy, which was definitely robbed, considering a major plot point in Tommy deals with the sensation of sound. This season was incredibly tight, packed with talent, so I am looking forward to the Tony’s and seeing who wins, but it’s unfortunate that only so much of the talent from this season gets to be recognized. Thank you for making this video, because the recognition for shows that weren’t nominated is still very important, even if the Tony’s passed them up

      @@hollymcl The Great Gatsby score certainly isn't even in my top 50 scores, but this season, where you had pop writers who know nothing about writing songs for the theater trying to write for character, this was written by two people who have had successful Broadway scores in the past-- Amelie actually being one of the great scores of the last 10 years! So it easily stood out as the best. Not that musical theatre writing tenure means everything-- Lempika might be even worse a score than Notebook!
