Utensils and hand tools are not mutually exclusive because a utensil is a type of tool for household use, and most tools are operated using hands. However, the argument that spoons are shovels doesn't work because the 'head' of a shovel is a blade (an essential part of the definition for 'shovel') for cutting through ground and moving loose material, whereas the 'head' of a spoon is described as a bowl and is used for foods and liquids. The argument that they are comparable because they superficially resemble one another is also invalid because it relies upon a spoon only being recognisable as something which looks like a shovel and vice versa, but this is negated by the fact that both shovels and spoons are recognisable tools in their own right which, upon being seen with no context, prompt most people to respond by labelling the spoon as a spoon and the shovel as a shovel, because each have automatic associations. Furthermore, spoons and shovels evolved differently for different purposes, so comparing them based on aesthetics is like comparing a shark to a dolphin because they share a few similarities while ignoring that they come from different taxonomic classes. One could argue that given the broad variety of animals labelled as 'fish' or 'crabs' despite having different evolutionary lines, labelling spoons and shovels the same due to aesthetics despite different origins has a precedent. Also if Cyclops-looking guy wanted to use fictional media as evidence, he could have mentioned the opening scene of Chicken Run where the main character attempts escape by digging under a fence with a spoon.

It is actually possible to write without knowing how to read, and I have historical evidence to back me up. During pre-colonial Bengal region of South Asia, it had extensive network of primary village schools. Since palm leaves manuscripts were fragile and hard to read, students did not read texts. They only learnt to write. Teachers dictated portions os texts from memory and students wrote them down. Many thus became literate without ever actually reading any kinds of texts. I wrote this word to word from my history book. So perhaps Manfred is from 1600s Bangladesh. XD
