    Dude. WinRAR is what is known as a "nag ware".
    The free trial never ends. The idea of a nag ware is to keep nagging you until you eventually feel bad and pay for the full version.
    The full and trial version have basically 0 difference in terms of functionality.

    I use _7-zip,_ myself. There's not commitment to buy, no ads, it integrates itself with Windows in a non-annoying way, and I can open all sorts of compressed directory / folder archives, such as RAR, LZH, and even the long-forgotten ARJ.
    I think it can only compress to ZIP and 7Z, though. But that's all I need.

    I'm with the mug guy. Zip folders are way better. Winrar barrages you with ads but 7zip doesn't. Every time i extract a rar I cant browse my folders in explorer. The fast speed takes away your computing power when you are doing other things.

    Leave it to Godot to find a way to get his computer hacked trying to download WinRar for free or an alternative. He probably tried turning the system32 folder into a .rar or .zip file on the process. All while saving $29. Happens in the best of families.

    zip is more portable than rar, if you are distributing files cross-platform then you should be using zip. Also encryption isn't to prevent viruses, it's to ensure that only those who know the password can view the contents. If you don't password protect your archive files, then there will be no encryption.

    Fun fact: To crack winrar, all you need is a valid license file. It doesn't check online if that is valid. And you won't get a virus because it's essentially a text file.
