Very important/necessary information: Different systems pull different levels of vacuum. Brake bleeder pumps, on average, pull from around 17 to 22" Hg. Not a very good vacuum. You want something that pulls around 28" Hg or more. This is what the commercial vacuum sealers typically pull. (As well as 2 stage vacuum pumps that start at around $100 US or so). Allegedly, the Pump N'Seal pump pulls a surprising 28.9" of Hg. That is beyond adequate. Btw, your average Food Saver system is like the brake bleeder pumps. Very few of them go beyond 24" Hg or so. I have a Weston commercial vacuum sealer (ALWAYS used _foil lined_ bags for maximum gas blocking) and a Pump N' Seal system to cover all and any needs I have. But if I had to recommend one and only one, it would be the Pump N' Seal, because it is the most affordable (and reliable!), at around 30 dollars. It doesn't work well for bags, not even their special bags, but it is awesome for glass jars. (And you can use the Food Saver and F.S. like attachments with the P.N.S. system and forego the pin/hole and check tabs, at least for standard sized mason jars [regular and wide mouth ones]). Anyways, point is that _not all vacuums are created equal._ A low-medium vacuum (brake bleeders, most Food Saver and Food Saver like in store vacuum sealers, etc) will *_not_* preserve near as well as a medium and medium-high vacuum (2 stage vacuum pumps, commercial grade food sealers, Pump N' Seal, etc).

With the Pump N' Seal, if you're using standard size mason jars (whether regular or wide mouth), you don't need to poke a hole and add a check tab, _if_ you have the Food Saver or similar lid attachments, you can put the pump directly over the hole on the top of these.

Our milk is Canadian sold in plastic bags, I throw 2% milk bags in the freezer, when I need it i place the frozen bag in the sink in cold water it defrost fast or leave it in my fridge for a day, shake the defrosted milk and back to normal, yum and no waste.

As seniors, it didn't make sense to me to have items with a 25-30 year shelf life. Not much point in having foods that will outlive us! Better for us to limit our storage to no more than 5 years shelf life & just keep rotating. And after Prince Charming's heart attack 2 years ago that required quite a few dietary changes, we thankfully didn't have a huge supply of foods to get rid of in favor of more heart healthy options.

I use evaporated milk and dry milk. But you can store milk in breast milk bags for up to a year in the deep freeze. It will last in the refrigerator freezer for 6 months.

I've had milk last 3 months in the 'fridge. I've also had it sour and curdle before it hit the expiration date. As Forrest Gump said, You never know what you're going to get.

Also look at the Itehil RO portable, solar compatible, water system. Great value for what it offers.

Great advice! I use powdered milk quite a bit for cooking. I don't have a freezer, and the apartment I live in is not large enough for me to have one, so freezer space is really not an option for me. Storing and rotating powdered milk is though, so that is the route I go. When I first started doing this, I was surprised at how quickly I went through the milk. Thanks for always sharing tips that help to keep us safe!!

7-10 days for skim milk? I only used to get 2 days once open and stored at 33F, that is why I now buy that 'lactose free' milk. I never compared the price but the '2% lactose free' lasts for months.

My aunt buys extra milk and freezes it. They pour out a glass from the carton allowing room for expansion and then they thaw the entire half gallon when they need it.

I live in South Louisiana and as you know hurricane season has started for us. What would be the best option to store it? I was planning on using it mostly for baking or cooking. I was wondering if powdered milk would be alright on my baking shelf

There's also shelf stable liquid milk in aseptic cartons (they look like giant juice boxes with a screw top lid). They're UHT pasturized at a very high temperature. They keep for a really long time (check the date on the container) and you just use them like regular milk. We keep a bunch in our pantry because our kid is lactose intolerant and we can get lactose free shelf stable milk. It also doubles as the backup liquid milk for my spouse that likes milk in his tea or coffee. They sell regular (not lactose free) milk in the cartons as well. Some people say the milk will last for 2 or 3 days at room temp after it has been opened, but I've never tried that.

Love this. I have learn if our milk smell bad? Pour it in a canning jar then smell it again. 9 times out of 10 it the bottle smells. My milk has lasted longer in a jar. If my milk start to curdled in my coffee, then I know it’s no good.

We switched to powered fat free milk a few years ago and it's been really convenient. We were finding that the milk from the grocery store was going bad in only a few minutes days so we decided to switch.
