18 months ago in my area of Florida, our water plant was hacked. Arsenic and other chemicals were dumbed in our water. Luckily, the SINGLE man who not only adjusts the chemicals but is also responsible for checking the outside, was running late, and saw the chemicals change. He was able to shut down the water, and of course the water authority was called and the police came around telling everyone NOT to drink the water. We get online alerts as well. Now, we have 2 guys each shift... 🙄

There's a way to treat 10,000 gallons of water for pathogenic microorganisms that costs between $10 - $20, called Calcium Hypochlorite.
It's a much more stable form of bleach. Liquid bleach is only good for 6 to 9 months before it returns to salt & water. Calcium hypochlorite is stable for up to 10 years, when stored properly.
It's the active ingredient in POOL SHOCK. Get one that preferably has at least 70% calcium hypochlorite.
The military sometimes uses calcium hypochlorite to treat unknown sources of water out in the field & in 3rd world countries where clean water is scarce. You can find info on how to create the correct ratio for treating water online.

i think i would use vinegar to sanitize a bottle and i would also say its a good idea to have a "key" thats used to turn on water spickets that are on the outside of commercial buildings in an SHTF. Remember also, that one gl of water per person per day is only for drinking. it doesn't account for cleaning and hygiene.

always good information. I would suggest adding one thing to your water mapping...once you find the water..how are you getting it home? what is you have to walk. Are you dipping 5 gallon buckets into a lake and are going to carry it home? its not light. Give it a try and see how to best get it home. :) I am on well, it's a deep well and there is only 1 manual pump company which makes a deep water pump (that I know of). so we installed that, works great, but it's not easy to pump..

My view of the bottled water is that it's great for short term outages and for getting you a jump start on other purification methods. We don't drink the small water bottles regularly, so they aren't something that we could really rotate through. I tend to store larger bottles of water. If we get a boil advisory, we can drink our stored water while we use other methods to make our water safe to drink. It's much easier to store 2 or 3 days of water than it is to store 2 weeks of water. We're a family of 3, 3x14 is 42 gallons (nearly 160 liters) that's a lot of water. Three days is only 9 gallons (34 liters) much more reasonable.

Canned water keeps your jars clean and the water can be poured into the canner as jars are needed. I'm sure there are more reasons but those are what come to mind right now. The Berkey is ‘gravity fed’ so doesn’t require electricity -just get a few extra filters for it - the more you can afford the better! I live in Northern Ireland & found there’s a British version of the Berkey which is cheaper for us. There are videos on CZcams of how you can make one yourself for very little, if you’re ’good with your hands’!!

Hey. The FIRST MATH to do is your SQUARE FOOTAGE of your entire living space.
If you’re like me, you have 300 square feet after all your belongings move into your 500 square foot apartment. Maybe less.
I have NO extra space except for my van to store water. Think about all the Americans who live in 500 square feet paying $1400 per month and working like slaves to pay it. Let’s get REAL.
Don’t forget the Life Straw and the Sawyer Mini
