    This is incredible. This video popped into my recommended yesterday and I've been hooked. I've been through every video, and it's nothing short of a masterpiece. From the cylinders and tripods to their laser eyes, the strategic destruction of the electrical infrastructure, and the harvesting in Birmingham. I'd love to see more car/vehicle chases in the future, sort of comparing our latest technology of the time against theirs. Another thing is how well you've blended H.G Wells's novel and slightly more modern 1934 Britain into the perfect alien invasion setting. Furthermore, I do like how you focus more on the mystery and terror of the invasion and less on the war and front line battles. Again, this is great work so far, and you've earned another subscriber. 😁

    These videos are really starting to give me the same feeling as the old "Resistance" games. Mid-20th century humanity, badly outgunned but not defenceless, set against a poweful and enigmatic alien threat... this is rapidly becoming one of my favourite interpretations of WoTW!

    After watching this twice I feel compelled to leave a comment. I have greatly enjoyed this series so far, and this part has completely exceeded my expectations. I've really appreciated your re-imagining of this story, and how you've still managed to keep important elements from the book. I love the choice of how much of the martian was revealed, it really capitalised on the suspense built through the previous videos (episodes? parts?) and nails the horror aspect of them and their appearance. When the cylinder opens in the book and the Narrator comments on the "intensity" of the martian's eyes, that line really stuck with me and my imagined image of their appearance. To me, this aspect has been translated perfectly in the video. The way the martian regards its next victim within that wreckage made my hairs stand on end, it was chilling in really visceral way. All that rambling just to say well done on this series, they've been fantastic to watch, and keep up the great work! :)

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934 Před 17 hodinami

      Love it! Thank you! I'm so glad my intentions and inner feelings(?) of the Martian have come through. He was a tricky beast to animate! I absolutely love hearing reactions, it's my favourite bit, and makes all the work totally worthwhile. I always want to be in the room with the viewer to see the reactions. I'm rather hoping someone does a reaction video at some point, because that would be really fun to watch. Yes, regarding the other versions, I'm trying to honour them (because I'm a massive fan of all of them) but also make it my own. War of the Worlds fans all seem very astute at noticing the references which is also great! Clearly you're one of them! :D I keep retelling old stories, but this whole series began as backdrop videos to a small stage play of the Orson Welles radio version (adapted to be set in the Midlands, UK though). So, it's beginning is very much seeded in that version. But as the channel grew, and it seemed to find an audience (I never expected), I started to dig much deeper into the ideas from the book, and also the 53 film (as that is a favourite of mine). I think it'd be impossible for them not to influence me, though it's certainly becoming it's own thing. It kind of writes itself, and I just have to find ways of capturing it. It's a really fun project, a dream project really, and it's great to share with everyone. Until I started the series, I had no idea that there was such a strong and lovely community around it. Anyway, I type a lot! So I'll leave this here, but thank you so much for watching, twice(!) and the great comment, very appreciated. Have a fantastic evening!

    Watching through these for the first time, I'm particulary impresed at how elements of several WoTW intrepetations have seemingly been brought together! Quotes from the book, radio broadcasts in the style of Orson Welles, designs for the tripods that draw inspiration from the movies and the musical... great work all round! 😁👍

      Thank you Baron! I'm a big fan of all versions of The War of the Worlds, and I'd be remiss if I didn't nod to them here and there. I grew up with the 1953 film and the musical, so it's always been a part of me I suppose. It's so great to work on my own version, work load aside, I'm having a lot of fun making it, so I love hearing from everyone who's watched it and enjoying it. All the best, and see you at the next one! :)

This is a fantastically well produced video. I was very impressed before, but now I'm in awe. Your work just keeps going from strength to strength. It's just frickin' amazin'. Love it. BTW, did you ever use Vehicle Setup Pro in this production?

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934 Před 21 hodinou

      Shabazzy :D Great to see you! And thank you of course, too kind! I'm still struggling with being too close to something for too long, and finding it hard to stand back and assess it. I would say that it's been a difficult birth! But I am most pleased to hear this from you, as I know you understand the difficulties in creating these things. Regarding vehicle setup pro, I didn't this time. I reached a point where the hold up in trying to get it all working was frustrating my eagerness to press on, so I hand keyed the whole thing. Without doubt, in future videos I'll probably use it, but this time I just had to do it manually. I kind of knew that it'd be almost impossible to spot the nuance of a properly rigged vehicle anyway, given the nature of the scene, so I was much happier that I could invest my time elsewhere. What really took up way too much time was creating those damn streets. They're more or less reasonably historically accurate and all modelled from scratch. The street they turn down after the handling machine flips the other truck no longer exists, and I recreated it from many old (and poor) photos. Typically, not much of it is seen and whizzes past the camera in a blur. But the modelling work will be useful in the future, so I hold on to that to keep my spirits up :) It's been a funny one to produce, and nothing like I originally intended. Certainly very costly in time. But still, I'm just glad it's out now, and the reception has been very good which is a relief... making up for my own inability to properly enjoy the result. I'm very sure you know the feeling. In time I'll see it with fresh eyes though. I'm rather hoping that I can finally make proper use of LW2023 moving forward, as the rendering glitch on clip maps really just broke my scenes and I ended up having to go back to 2019. Render times on so many frames has been a real hold back, and the quality isn't what I wanted it to be. I think that is what's bothering me the most to be honest. If i can get my head around Octane, then I'm hoping that will speed up future videos a lot. Fingers crossed! Anyway, great as always to see you, and I very much appreciate your comment. Wishing you the very best :)

When I saw how similar we'd approached it (because I based mine on the description in the book, and assume that Ray had too) I couldn't believe it! In a way, I'm kind of glad I didn't see it earlier, because I might have been tempted to change it altogether. Though, that said, I am happy to see it as a huge nod to Ray's work, because as a kid, he was a massive influence on me becoming an animator. First of all, I love how even an individual Lone Martian can evoke what I interpret as curiosity and almost something like sadistic joy at what it is doing to the humans and additionally the design itself seems to be a perfect blend of a bird and octopus which is fitting given how the book describes the Martians’ behaviour and appearance. The Lone Martian keeps looking into the camera too and I think it is definitely curious and perhaps wonders if it was a living thing at first? The visuals are beautifully haunting and existentially petrifying, they feel like the 1906 visualisations given motion here most in this episode. The Martians truly to me feel almost demonic and definitely over worldly but more in a supernatural sense. Just look at what the Martians are constructing around the city, I honestly cannot find the correct words to describe how eerie and disturbing it is because it IS so alien and yet it is deeply uncanny because these Martians exist in the same physical universe as the earth and mankind and obey the same laws of reality… in fact it’s their greater understanding of those laws that allow them to appear as nightmarish gods to us. My favourite part of this episode overall is the ending with that giant (drilling?) Martian machine and red weed…. It does not feel like our world anymore. Also those Spider tripods or handling machines are perfect. The military attempting to fend off the Martians was great. I can’t wait for one of the way way way later episodes when human scientists preform an autopsy on a Martian. The book chapter that essentially dedicates most of its paragraphs to theorising on the Martians’ physiology and culture is one of my favourites of the book.

I always love your impassioned insight into the story, and it pleases me greatly that I'm hitting the right notes. You've been with me since near the beginning, and I've greatly enjoyed our chats. I'm glad you picked up on the Martian and the camera. Spot on. What isn't so clear, but can be observed if you look closely, is that Captain Harrington/Raven pulls a loose blanket over himself to hide right before the truck is pulled over. But the camera, left out to capture the scene does catch it's eye, and it would have picked it up and studied it if he/it hadn't been called away. RE: The red weed. There were certain things I had to get in to this episode before we kind of move away from Birmingham, though it will come up again in some ways I am sure. But the main thing was the process of the red weed, and how it starts. I'm rather looking forward to where I go with that, and after a bit of a look in other places, we'll come back to it, and it's transformative nature. I can't wait to get there! Honestly, making this is a bit like a kid in a toy shop. So many things I want to look at, and it's almost frustrating I have to do one at a time! I'm glad you liked that bit. I'd have liked to have spent a little more time on it, but I so needed to get this out and just draw a line under it so I can move forward. When you work on something for too long, it can become negative, and I don't want that to happen! I need to do something different now, and I think I know where I'm taking us next. Also, the autopsy. I hadn't even thought about that! But now I am! So when that comes up, because I've got to do it now lol... it'll be for you my friend! Thank you for all your support along the way, and again, great to see you and appreciate your detailed feedback and thoughts, always a pleasure. Keep good!

      Yeah. Well, I had to do some paid work in the middle of production, and that sucked up 2 or 3 months, otherwise I'd be homeless and very thin lol. But still, there was a huge amount of work that went into this vid, more from a historical point of view. Those streets (as frustratingly little that you really see of them in the end) are actual recreations of a place that no longer exists (called Jamaica Row). You can look up photos of it, and it'll all look quite familiar. I kind of got bogged down in detail. And when it started to take too long, it kind of dragged me down a bit, and that affected my pace a fair bit too. You've no idea how glad I was to get this episode finished, I can tell you! The Martian sequence wasn't even in the original plan, as the driving part was going to be much longer. But the time it was taking me to construct the city was killing me and the passion, so I thought ok, let's draw a line under it. It all kind of happened organically. The Martian sequence was quite a lot of work too. My mind has kind of blocked out a lot of the laborious steps of it all. But trying to make a rig for a practical tentacled creature was quite the challenge. I went through several versions before I found the best way to do it. Character rigging isn't my strongest point, as I'm more of an animator than a technical kind of person. You have to be a bit of both, but this was tough! That said, I've learned a lot of stuff along the way, and that's also a big part of my drive doing all of this. I'm getting to play with things that a lot of my past work hasn't given me a chance to play with. Anyway, I'm sure you didn't expect an essay for a reply, so I'll stop now. But thank you for your support, and I certainly appreciate the understanding if you know animation and all the jazz that goes with it. Kindest regards!

I was never keen on the short sighted insta-death of the Martians. They're very intelligent. So expect to see them take a much grander foothold on Earth. The thing to remember is that the year is 1934, so it's not quite the same as 1898, and so the story will reflect that too. But we'll for sure see plenty that is familiar along side that which is not. It'll be a fun ride! I'm sure you'll enjoy it, because it's only going to get more intense! Films truncate the story so much that you don't get to see much. Part of the idea behind utilising the "Directorate of military operations and intelligence" is that they are gathering as much intel as possible, because they have no idea what they are up against. Well, it's hard to say. They kind of got lucky to a degree, possibly didn't even realise how close they were... and they were under orders. One thing to bare in mind, is that although the Martians are mighty, they're limited on resources and manpower right now (...). They certainly aren't everywhere. Their presence has cleared the streets, and they rounded up as many as they could. It was very risky, and look what happened. Interestingly, I did actually map it all out, and the roads you are seeing are real roads from the time. The Trucks pick up Raven on New Street, then veer off on to Jamaica Row (which was bombed in WW2 incidentally) and head towards Cheap side, which is where they are thrown down. I think the bottom line is, any activity in Birmingham at that point was hugely risky. They were a brave bunch of lads (and a few lasses). Thanks for watching, and making an astute observation. :)

    I've said it once and i'll say it again, this is becoming the best adaptation of wotw ever. First, it manages to do something other adaptations fail at, making the Martians feel like a military force. While some movies make them move and act in formation, this adaptation makes them feel like a military, with coordinated attacks, destroying designated infrastructure. We even get to hear their communication system. Speaking of which the Martians look fantastic, they look like they've been pulled straight from the book, yet i do love how they have an actual body, it makes them feel more realistic and the ay they feed is so gruesome, i loved it. I also really like the end scene where we see the cage making the red weed out of the bodies, these two last points make me understand why i love war of the worlds so much, the aliens don't care about us in the slightest, they don't want us as slaves or experiments, they want us as food and they brutalize us for it. Amazing, keep up the good work.

      Thanks Marco. I'm really glad you're getting my take on it, and I want the same things as you when I'm making it. I want them to make sense, even though quite alien, there are ways to do things. I'm trying to have a logic to their actions, and even though it's alien and weird, it's hopefully still kind of recognisable. I'm trying to weave the ideas Wells put out there into some kind of realistic situation. Wells, in his time must have had a fantastic imagination. Really glad you agree on the body aspect of the Martians. I added that, because I wanted to give them more physicality. Somewhat recognisable as similar to man, despite the differences. I want them to have a presence. It's really pleased me that I've had such good feedback on them. It can be quite nerve racking doing something beloved. I guess the film interpretations have been a little disappointing from my point of view, so there was no way I was going to take the easy route out given this opportunity. And yes, the Martians are callous, and if ever there was an embodiment of pure ego and self grandeur, I'd like the Martians to be it. They do not care about man, do not fear us in any way, and why should they? But of course, on a grand scale, there is always a bigger fish, or a microscopic one :) Thanks for the great comment, I love that you get where I'm going with it. It helps to remind me too. Lightwave is pretty much a self contained studio, and I don't really need to go too far away from it. The only exception would be texturing, for which I do most of it in photoshop (though I'm looking to move away from Adobe, maybe over to Affinity). I cancelled my Adobe sub back in 2020 when things were very tight. I still have the final CS version on disk, and Adobe are so poor at updating their software, given the amount they charge, there is barely a difference. But yes, I'd always recommend Lightwave. It went through a bit of a bumpy patch as it was sold to a company who didn't care for it. Thankfully, they sold it on to a group of people who actually use it and love it like I do, and they're making massive strides right now and getting it back on track. Amazingly, they seem to be adding all the tools I really need for future videos, so I'm over the moon :) It costs a bit to get on board, where as Blender is free, but there is a certain organisation of the software that just makes it much easier to use. In fact, if you can find my twitter/X account, there is a newspaper front page I created, and one of the articles is about Churchill warning of military build up in Germany. Originally, this series was going to be kind of cross platform, and unfold in real time (with an 88 year time difference). So the very first tweets have a couple of articles of the events captured through telescopes on Mars. The twitter didn't get any traction though, but the youtube audience started to grow quite quickly, so I placed my attention here and decided to go with an episodic approach instead. But that stuff is still up, and available to read for anyone interested. Though the series is rather dark and brooding, I think the positive aspect will be the unification of man against the outside threat... and even if they can't beat the Martians, it'd be nice to see humanity undivided, especially in light of the world that is outside the window.
