As the Tripods have gathered to destroy the power stations, they've also made themselves a target. The RAF and Operation Gauntlet make their first attempt to fight back.

Oh my oh me colour me surprised. This is INCREDIBLY interesting. A few takeaways from this:
1. The tripods aren’t invincible, they clearly have limits and those limits are ones 1930’s humanity can overcome.
2. They are agile in a way we haven’t seen them display because they haven’t needed too.
3. They are tough even if their shield is breached.
4. Their shield is breachable with enough firepower and the heat ray is a very narrow band weapon that strikes a small area with tremendous amount of force.
5. Something large, carrying a awful lot of firepower should be able to bring a tripod down by inflicting a massive amount of damage on the tripod all at once. Like any of the battleships or heavy cruisers present in the worlds navies
6. Alternatives to engage tripods when they aren’t near the coast could be placing a massive amount of explosives (like I’m talking 100’s of tons of TNT here) underground on expected tripods routes of advance and detonating them once a tripod is near on or on top the explosives. Alternatively the heat ray is a direct line of sight weapon so indirect fire with artillery of any kind should be effective, if the shelling is continuous the shield should go down. Alternatively battleship grade guns mounted on railway carriages or emplaced near cities and towns can be effective in a detterent role or as direct fire ‘shield droppers’ and ‘tripod killers’.
7. The humans can win this.

The real challenge is that people are not prepared, and they only know what they have seen so far. Operation Gauntlet played a hunch, that very nearly didn't work and was saved by a skilled pilot with nothing to lose. Only 2 planes got away. I think this attack may have surprised the Martians, and I wonder, how will they respond?
One thing for sure, the Martian pilot of one eye is going to be ruthless in the future.

@@waroftheworlds1934 oh yeah reminds me the british at this point had shelved absolutely monster guns due to cancelled royal navy programs,would be interesting to see some of those guns hastily converted into railway guns as an attempt in damaging/killing tripods
@@louierenault7344 It's a very interesting period of time. Britain was worried about Germany since the early 30s. It's kind of fascinating that it took nearly 10 years to explode into all out war, and things were changing quite rapidly in those years.
So I'm wondering... what speeds were possible with trains back then? An episode around the rail lines is already kind of slated, but you have me thinking now :D
There are so many rabbit holes with military tech back then, and it can be very hard to research a lot of it. Everything was shifting quite quickly.

@@waroftheworlds1934 A top tier passenger express on the mainline would be starting to push 100mph, everything else slower than that. Freight would be 20-45 ish mph depending on the types of wagons used. This is a very loose answer, it can get very, very complicated.

Yes indeed, the 37s carried out their orders, knowing that they were very unlikely to come back. But they certainly left a mark! :)
There is like emotions now in the tripods... Maybe aggress and like this but it's not an emotionless machines now... This mouth-shaped mechanism down the gun-eyes, all that is making a "face" for them, you can really feel the evil (like Goliath's design)... It makes final scenes such epic, really underrated!

I'm glad you recognise the source :D Originally, this piece was to a version of the radio play produced locally. So the pilots voice was in there.
I decided to take it out, as it was drowned out by the sounds and I'd changed it quite a bit, but the actions of the pilot remain. But if you know the source, I think it's probably more fun to watch!

It's one thing I love is when the Martians in WOTW are portrayed as vunerable, it's a callback to Imperialism and the heavy costs to conquer the areas of the world the Imperial powers did.
Furthermore, the agility of the martian war machines, that's something I don't see people do a lot. These things are fast in the books where express trains could be outrun *60-80 MPH* by these machines and it's good to see that back and given how adaptable the martians doubtless are, we'll be seeing a lot more of that.

But you know, now you mention it, I can't remember where that particular idea came from. I mean, I know the story pretty well, and what it should look like, so in retrospect, it was a strange design choice. I think it just seemed right somehow when I was doing it.
I think I just like the idea of seeing scary glowing eyes up in the sky in the darkness. It feels threatening. And having the beams come from that glow just made sense.

lol, I know the one! And cheers. I've actually rebuilt a lot of the tripod model between the last and this video. The new version appears in quite a few scenes of this. It is most obvious around the neck, as I removed the big saucer plate as I never really liked that. But it should look better overall. I'll probably keep tweaking it over time as and when a scene shows something closer in. Cheers War Machine!

yet another great upload. I love that the pilot just kamikazed that tripod lol. So unfortunate that the tripod's heat rays were the only thing that was damaged. Poor humans. The operation failed I guess.

Hopefully this isn't the peak by a long shot. But I am proud of it as a piece though. Especially the fall at the end came out just as I imagined really.
I haven't had enough time since the intensity of making it (and watching it over and over in the edit until I'm numb) to be objective about it myself. Black Out on the other hand came together quite quickly, so I could watch that one without too much familiarity.

@@waroftheworlds1934 indeed a lot of work , i can simply imagine the Axis powers speed building their battleships , previously done for the tensions WW2 would cause but since the Martians landed they would try to help , and send Bismarck and Yamato , they would successfully take down a few tripods and then ultimately lose , but that's a concept
@@Battleshipfan The problem with ships is the time it takes to get around the world. I've got to do some thinking on the logistics and reality of the war soon when it comes to things such as battleships. With the whole world under attack, and no core target, I think the military's aren't sure where to focus their efforts.
I'd actually like to do a bit of globe trotting to see other places, and how they are handing it. The Yamato would be a fun battle wouldn't it! In fact, it's triggered a thought from a story telling point of view! I'll think on it Battleshipfan!
@@waroftheworlds1934 you probably don't even have to do it , you can just throw HMS Hood , Prince of Wales and HMS Thunderchild along with all the ships of the Royal Navy , have Hood blow up the same way she was sunk by the Bismarck , let the thunderchild Kamikase itself by taking down 3 tripods and end the battle with heavy casualties on both sides

This is glorious work! one of my favorite takeaways was when the pilot suicide bombed the martain, seemingly killing it. when i saw the foot, i thought one of other martains had come to render aid by repairing it. only to find out that no, the pilot merely damaged it, but not enough to kill it. i'm looking forward to more of this and what other plans you have!

Bloody brilliant, the 1930’s feel is superbly done both in visual and audio presentation. Thanks for a real treat. Have you borrowed from the “Dune” concept of a relatively slow object (as in not a bullet or shell),can pass through a shield ?
Thanks MandS T :) Really glad you've enjoyed it so far. I'm working on more right now, and we'll get into the shield aspect soon. Though I do like "the slow blade penetrates the shield" reference :D it's simpler than that. But I'll get to that soon.

I don't like about the story is how undefeatable this things are. Even if it's hard as fuck. But you can defeat them would make the story better. In the latest movie story they were absolutely completey hopeless... Takes out the will to fight spirit out of the story. Which is actually one of the best parts in movies.
Well, to be fair, the story really is about facing an undefeatable enemy. It is nature and/or God (depending upon your perspective) that balances the scale in the end, and not man. I mean, it's really a comment (when talking about H G Wells) on British colonialism and Empire. A kind of, "How would you like it?". So, in a sense, you're not supposed to like it.
However, regarding this telling of the story, don't worry, the fighting spirit will be there. But at the same time, there are boundaries that I have to stick to when telling this story in order to stay reasonably faithful to the originals. But I feel as you do. I want there to be an actual war, not just an extermination. But all I will say, is that if you actually look at what has happened in the story so far, the Tripods have emerged from the cylinder, had a single fight with a few mid range tanks and then destroyed a power station. And then finally here, we see a failed bombing run.
Technically, it's still very early days in terms of the story. I'm currently working on the next batch of videos right now during this break. I can't promise it's going to get any less hopeless, but you will see a will to try to get beyond that by the humans.
One other thing i will say about this version, is that it is also leaning into the horror aspect of the concept. Most versions seem a bit light on that front given the horrific nature of it all. Films like Independence day created the War Or The Worlds with the action human saves the day angle. But this isn't that (even though sometimes I want to go that route, because it's quite hard to write a hopeless situation, for the same reasons that you don't like it either). Anyway, all I'll say, is that there will be a little more balance coming up.
Just bare in mind, that they have been invaded and caught off guard in a very difficult year, unprepared, and still trying to work out who or what the enemy is. There is much to explore! :D

What you've been doing with these videos is amazing for the budget. It reminds me of what Kerry Conran did with his original independent version of "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow".
Maybe you could eventually raise enough money to make a faithful adaptation of the book. It would probably put the Pendragon Pictures version to shame.
Thank you :) Yes maybe. I'm just taking every day as it comes. The series is a lot of work, and I don't know if I'll have the energy to do it all over again once I'm done (beyond making a final complete edit, with a few upgrades and additions). But I would consider it. Though, I imagine I'll be looking at other projects beyond this, for which I have a few ideas... maybe even more H G Wells.
My missus wants me to tackle some H P Lovecraft too, so that is a possibility. I'm not thinking about it too much until I have completed this series. I really do appreciate the vote of confidence though, and for watching :) Thank you!

I'm gonna point out something and it's that the Vickers Wellington's first flight was on June 15, 1936 and entered service in October 1938
Yeah, it's a hang over from the animations origins. It was originally to accompany the radio play set in 1938 for a theatre production. When youtube changed all the channel naming conventions, I chose 1934, and later found out that the Wellington wasn't around at that point (though it was in early testing phase at this point in time, but it looked a bit different to what we have here). But, I decided, despite this, that I would use them anyway.
If you look at the special features video czcams.com/video/giSLclxKO-A/video.html you will see the original version of this episode, and in the video description i explain fully why I ended up a little out of time.
But hey, this is an alternative timeline, and so I guess it was developed a couple of years earlier than in ours :)
I hope you enjoyed it non the less. If I had lots of budget instead of zero, I'd have remade it with appropriate planes. I may replace them and rerender this whole sequence later on when I compile the whole thing into one long video. We'll see. Have a great Sunday!

I just realized that the sound of it diving was the Stuka dive bomber *Hitler taking notes* and a *BATTOTAI INTENSIFIES*
Yeah. It's really a cartoon audio shorthand for freefall dive, and wildly inaccurate :D I'm perpetuating a myth that all planes make this sound when flying towards the ground, and I can live with that for the sake of... erm... art. Hehe.
However, I sleep at night by knowing that the diving bomber had been damaged, and the wind rushing over the holes in it's shell and propeller just happen to sound very similar to the stuka. Any similarity is merely coincidence. :)

It was kinda smart to crash in the tripods than bombing them or using tanks.
The only thing that wasn't smart is that the the tripods have automatic system So they can be controlled Without aliens.
Edit 1: Also soon they will get their automatic machine broken due to walking or using other stuff too long.
2 things...most of those aircraft types did not exist in 1934, and the term 'kamekaze' never came into use in the European Front, as it was derived from Japanese aircraft attacks in the Pacific theater.
Hi Mike, yeah. Unfortunately, the Wellingtons are kind of a hangover from the origins of this project (for a theatre production) and that was set slightly later in the 30s than this is.
When I came to naming the project and setting a time frame (1934-35), I hadn't even thought about when Vickers had produced the plane. But so much work had gone into what had been done before, I felt I just had to go with it despite that.
It is simply an unfortunate misalignment, and I tip my hat to your knowledge (that would pass most people by).
Quite simply, I've had to frame it in my own head, that this is a different timeline, maybe a different Earth, and some things happened earlier in this one. Yep, that's an awful cop out, but it is what it is. But honestly, beyond this point, that kind of discrepancy won't happen because I am quite intent on being reasonably historically accurate as much as I can.
One thing I will say though, is that gathering information on military hardware of this time period is quite difficult and time consuming. It's also really under catered for in terms of premade models, so I'm having to do most of it myself.
I really wish I'd set the story slightly later, but it is what it is. I hope it doesn't spoil your enjoyment too much though! Perhaps when I reach the end of the story, and I come to compile it into a longer work, I'll replace the planes with something that is more time period specific. For now, it'll just have to stay as is.

p.s. I assume you are referring to other comments regarding kamikaze. Really, the whole scene is more in reference to the original Orson radio play. The crash wasn't really intentional, and was a result of engine damage. "Dropping on them, bombs and all"!

Hm, I wonder why the fighting machine didn’t fire the heatray at the wellington that flew into it.
You can see that it charges the heatray but it hesitates. Maybe it is curious to see what the wellington is doing.
And I wonder what they’d think a plane is anyway.
In the book, the martians first fired black smoke at the thunderchild because they thought it was some organic entity that was tamed by humans since they had the mindset that humans could never build something that complex.
Either that, or the wellington succeeded out of pure luck

I like the show but you should add the alien got 3 legs and only 2 eyes but the eyes are deep black that make the eyes creepy and the head would look like some sort like tripod but alien got a mouth and you should add like army attack the tripod and manage to kill 1 tripod with the German big artillery that bypass and destroy shield because strong shell it would be cool.

Thanks for the thoughts! Though the Martian is already designed, and I promise you it is creepy! And though it's not quite how you'd imagine it, there are similarities. But we won't be seeing it up close any time soon. It's closer to the book than the 2005 film. Not completely like the book, but the description in there is what inspired it. I can't say more than that right now!! I've given away too many spoilers in the comments already :)
As for Germany, and downing a Tripod, well... we'll see what is happening in other places in the future. I'm currently in the middle of mapping out the future episodes right now. Honestly, we've barely got started! :)

That... is the question isn't it! A discovery to be made. Operation Gauntlet was based on a simple theory, but we'll find out more about that in the future.

Hi Ovi, I really do appreciate the enthusiasm, but I'm making this for my own enjoyment, and designing and modelling is one of my main factors of pleasure. Take that away and i'll start to wonder why I'm bothering to make the series and not continue. Though, I would recommend that you grab a copy of Blender and see what you can do with it! Why not bring it alive yourself?
Beyond that, (and I don't want to give too much away) I'm already further along than you may realise. There is a lot of preparation work involved in these animations. I'm sorry if this answer is a bit unsatisfactory, as I can tell you are keen. It just defeats the purpose of why I'm doing it. I think it's great you are designing and drawing though. Keep going!

:) Heh. I expect this is the thing I will have to explain more than anything. Basically, it's a hang over from the origin of this series, which was a theatre production of the radio play . That was set a few years later (1938).
The original reason i made this channel was to get that work out in the world (as opposed to lost on a hard drive, though I am greatly expanding on it).
When youtube was changing the naming convention, I realised I needed to give the story a name that unique so that people can find it.
So I settled on 1934/35 as a period that is far enough away from the 1938 radio play that inspired it, but close enough to fit with the work that had been done already.
Unfortunately, it was only during the production of this particular video that I realised the Wellington was still in the development phase in 1935 (which is when this video is set). But I decided to go with it, because otherwise I'd have to redo a heck of a lot of things and I couldn't afford the time to do that unfortunately.
So we just have to imagine that this isn't our timeline, and that things are slightly different. H G Wells wrote The Time Machine after all!, so :D
But really, in the future, you shouldn't find any more inaccuracies as I do like to research. It's just an unfortunate hang over from it's origins (in which it actually was time accurate). It's just a quirk.
Though I have to compliment you on knowing your aviation history! Always a good thing :)
