The Martian Invasion of Surrey - Ch 5: In London

- Chapter 5 of my ongoing serialisation of H G Wells's novel War of the Worlds sees the narrative switch to London where the seriousness of the Martian invasion is beginning to dawn on the population. The narrator's brother is eager for news and travels across town to Waterloo intending to catch a train to Woking, only to discover that Woking has been destroyed along with other Surrey towns. Londoners are woken early on the Monday morning with the terrifying news that the Martians are advancing on London and using poisonous gas "The Black Smoke"
In this chapter, I have tried to re-create what central London would have looked like in Victorian times. Serious traffic congestion in our cities is not a new phenomenon - just look on-line at old film footage from the era.
This animated series is made using Lightwave 2020, FCPX, Affinity Photo, Metashape, Makehuman, Logic Pro & Mixamo (for the MOCAP animation), and now software from D-ID.com (for mouth animation)
My apologies for the delay getting this chapter out there. There is a lot of animation here and I have also been otherwise engaged filming a family of Tawny Owls (which will eventually appear on CZcams) - Krátké a kreslené filmy

i hope we see some of the more obscure correa moment like my favorite where it shows a tripod trying to rip off a railroad from the ground and it looks like its really putting its back into it

You follow the book particularly closely, and I agree with and understand the elements you've left out to move the story along. The background detail is astounding, as is that of the NPCs. Funny you should say that. That pub, in Chalk Farm, was one that I and my friends would occasionally visit in our University days (during the '60s), which is why I included it. It is also very near to Regent's Park, where the main character lived. The drunk could have been any one of us!
I love these. A few years back I read WOtW again for the Nth time and that time had Google Maps to follow along with all the locations mentioned in the book, which are all real.

Hi, thanks for your interest. Yes, those machines will appear in the appropriate chapters in due course. They will be based on Correa's illustrations, of course.

Thanks for your interest in my project and your suggestions. I am following the book chapter by chapter, including as many of the "set pieces" as my animation skills will allow. I am not sure adding text will achieve anything as anyone with a copy of WOTW can follow the narrative.

Well spotted!!! Although electricity was in use back then and quite widespread.
No motorcars and no autobus in London around 1904? I have other photographies of that time
An early motor car (a Humber 1904 model) appears in Trafalgar Square and Regent's Park (in the last scene). Although motorised omnibuses were being developed and some were in use, the horse drawn buses were still, at that time, by far the most common. Certainly, archive film footage of London traffic shows only horse drawn buses with the very occasional motor car and these films are what I have based these scenes on. Thank you for your interest.

Superbly done but I think piano music of more dramatic quality by more sensitive in talented musicians would have been done better back in the day.

The humans need to find a way to fight back they know a weakness to the martians are the artillery cannons so they need to use those more but there aim is not that good so I don’t know how the humans are gonna fight back air strikes maybe I don’t know

This is so amazing and I look forward to every installment. How many chapters do you expect there will be?
I'm about half way through the book, although some of the later chapters may be condensed as they are a bit "wordy" - not good for a silent film. Next chapter has the Martians regaining the offensive and using the Black Smoke - will be finished in a couple of weeks I hope. After that will be the mass exodus from London and the "Thunderchild" encounter, which everyone seems to be waiting for. Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for your interest. Chapter 6 will see the Narrator hooking up with a Curate, and the Martians deploying the "Black Smoke". Only just started it, so will be a few months away. It's only me producing this serialisation, and I do have other projects on the go!

@@rgnogstar This chapter sets the scene for what eventually happens off the coast of Essex, when the tripods engage with the "Thunderchild". The narrator's brother is fleeing London and will make his way eastwards and will get on a steamer heading to the Continent as the tripods close in.
The next chapter, however, will return to the narrator currently unconscious on the banks of the Thames. The tripods are re-grouping after their set-back, but return with new tactics - the use of the "Black Smoke". My animation follows the book closely, so get hold of a copy or read it online and you will see in which chapters the tripods are active.

@@rgnogstar Chapter 6 will include the narrator falling in with a curate and witnessing the Martian Tripods using the Black Smoke and Heat Ray to overcome the artillery. Handling machines and Thunderchild come in future chapters
