On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American in space in this Mercury capsule. He named it "Freedom 7," the number signifying the seven original Mercury astronauts; NASA called the mission Mercury-Redstone 3 (MR-3).

Those scaffolding towers at 6:42 were 50ft tall camera platforms. We were still using those into the 1990s for Delta, Atlas and Titan launches.

STS-1 no doubt was the greatest test flight because of the live, human cargo but this all up test of the massive Saturn V has to be a close second. I'm always a bit disappointed by the network coverage and calls of these historic and incredibly risky and dangerous test flights. There's almost an expectation things will go just fine and the likes of Cronkite, Bergman, McGee et. al. never did express the gamble NASA took with this test. The entire man on the moon effort could have ended with a mishap on this flight (if the Saturn V had a first flight like Space X's super-heavy booster, that would have been the end). Uncle Walter's call is by far the best as he loses his cool, overwhelmed by the sheer power of the S-1C. "AWRRRUGH IT'S TERRIFIC our building is shaking! Look at that rocket GO into the sky at 3000 feet!!!

From the way this flight director talks you wouldn't know 7 people were killed... Are we to believe he had no idea Thiokol and Marshall debated the safety of this cold weather launch? I say this because he speaks as if he has no idea of what may have gone wrong. I find it to be deceitful...

I think it was simply so far ahead of its time the world had moved on to other problems or priorities. It took the world until now 60 years after Apollo to catch-up and to go back. What I expect will happen when we do go back. The current NASA and space agencies, SpaceX etc. They going find it a lot harder than they expected to do and to be deeply impressed (ie awe) with how this was done with 1960s technology, the bravery and smarts of the engineers and astronauts to achieve the moon landing. They didn’t have smart rockets, AI or computers to navigate. But even with all of our technology advances we are going to struggle repeating their steps. There really was a level of human excellence achieved with Apollo. But so glad we going back.

Wait! Who, how, what?!? I don't understand how they got the cam to pan up. I mean, it's almost perfect. The timing would've been hard to be sure of. Even today, we have a 3 sec delay on landlines on calls from the states to Africa, Iraq, etc.. But, hhmmm, maybe they could have timed it so close due to them timing different cams during the mission. Ok I'm back to being a full believer..lol Whew! 😅
