- Apollo 16 - Full Mission Day 5 (Landing at Descartes)
The fifth day of the mission starts with a wake up period, followed by Young and Duke transferring to the Lunar Module Orion and checking out the LM systems prior to undocking. After undocking, Ken Mattingly, alone in the Command Module Casper encounters a problem in the back up system for the Service Propulsion System engine which means the circularisation burn could not be completed. The crews were told to close the gap and station keep with each other in case a re-docking became necessary and the LMs Descent Engine was needed to help them get home. After several orbits of evaluation, it was determined that Young and Duke could attempt the 5th lunar landing, which occurred some 5 hours late. The coverage ends with the crews sleep period.
Note: During the mission the CSM and LM radio loops were separated with 2 CapCom's in communication with each spacecraft. The audio for Ken Mattingly in the CSM is not available complete. Some of the comms he had are included but it should be noted that this is incomplete and only recorded by PAO on this loop sporadically.

There is no better coverage of the Apollo missions than these videos.
It’s the only place that the captures the everything in one place. Truly invaluable for historical reference.
It’s fun to follow along with checklists, and timeline, and see the astronauts handwritten notes on them.
Those are really kind words, thank you. That means a lot as that's the precise reason I do these for. Regards LM5
I had the pleasure of watching many videos of this mission when I was 6 when John Young came to our city and spoke of the mission and brought moon rocks and signed pictures of him saluting the flag on the moon. Someone stole my picture when I was 35 and still haven’t gotten over it. Best wishes from the moon it read. Signed John Young
First landing I can remember. I was 4 years old. Seeing this i thought anything was possible.
I remember walking home from school that Thursday afternoon expecting them to commence PDI and land at Descartes, only to have a three orbit wave off due to the problem with the TVC servo loop in the SPS.. After the three orbit delay, I actually got to see the almost first quarter moon low in the southern sky above the awning covering the west facing living room window in our house in Monte Vista, Colorado. And I used my dad's binoculars to watch the moon during PDI, as well as watch the coverage on CBS News. It was Amazing to see the moon in the sky at the same time they were landing on it. Thank you for bringing this historic Apollo Landing back to me and everyone else as though it were live even though it's over a half-century ago now.
Thanks for sharing your memories...glad you enjoyed it second time around too
When Eagle landed, I was at my cousin's house listening to it on the radio. We had dinner and came home, my Dad had my Newtonian telescope out in the backyard and we looked at the moon trying to find them lol My brother were lucky that Armstrong and Aldrin were too keyed up for their scheduled rest and they moved up the moonwalk. We got to stay up and watch it that Sunday night instead of trying to wake up in the middle of the night.
One thing wrong in the Apollo 13 movie is when Tom Hanks is laying in his chaise lounge and covering up the moon with his thumb. The moon had set in the west before that and would not have been visible. The moonwalk of Apollo 11 was received by the Honeysuckle Creek and Parkes satellite dishes in Australia and sent to Houston and then to the world.
A very late night/early morning for me back then following this...and now i can do it again in SO much detail, AMAZING SIR!! Thank you
As always, you are welcome silver
I love how Irwin just flat out refuses to say 'all balls' :)
What a great holiday gift for us here in the U.S. during Memorial Day weekend - showing the best of what humanity can endeavor to achieve - even during a period of time when so much conflict cost so many lives. Thanks LM5 !
Thanks Scott, it was a pleasure putting it all together
Thank you for doing this. It's important history
Thanks for this. I absolutely love the dynamic between Young and Duke.
They were an awesome crew. Thanks for the comment
Thank you so much for this! You're a TREASURE to the community, an absolute treasure!
You are more than welcome
Wonderful stuff. It’s really cool to hear them all going through problem solving. Amazing. Thank for this 😉
Welcome as always Bas glad you like it
Absolutely outstanding content once again. This shouldn’t be so entertaining, but I can’t put this stuff down.
Your content should be preserved as some of the most complete historical records of the Apollo missions. Thank you once again LM5
Thanks! That means a lot as they don't get many views, but know that those that do watch it means something to. Hopefully the video archive that is CZcams will be available for a very long time to come
Absolutely amazing video graphics - as always high quality work. Thanks again for putting in so much creativity, energy and commitment.
Thanks Oliver...3 months to do, but enjoyed it and looking forward to the next one ...EVA 1
16 is such a special mission. Thank you x 16 !!!!!!
Simply awesome work thank you so much for this top class series!
Thanks Peter, really appreciate your comments and support - glad this one is in the can as it were...looking forward to attempting the first EVA day next regards LM5
Superlative work - again - LM 5 🙂
Thanks as always Pat
outstanding work like always. I didn't realize how close Apollo 16 came to not landing because of a technical glitch. Can't wait to see your next masterpiece grade is always keep them coming. Cheers and regards Jim.
Thanks Jim, you can hear the resignation in the crews voices the longer it goes on
Another gem from LM5. You sir are a godsend.
Thanks Gregg glad you liked it
RIP T.K Mattingly ❤
Hello @lm5, awesome awesome awesome work...! I absolutely admire your skills in visualising what was happening out of the (only audio - sometimes pretty poorly) records!!! ❤
Bit off topic but I'd like to mention it, nevertheless: The extra snippets of the operation desk are very funny (and surreal), the shiny ashtray and the single smoking cigarette made me laugh - - - bc that's probably not exactly what it looked like during an ongoing mission 😂
Yeah I know what you mean about the desk. Will ask Paolo to rough it up a bit! And with regards to visualising what's happening, there are a lot of clues in the audio and pictures they took which give an approximation for visualising what's happening...it's a bit of an ear and eye strain lol especially trying to show the LM /CSM during the "wave-off" period for this video, because the simulator wants to focus on one of the spacecraft, it's not easy to show distance....but all good fun
Love it. I had to go and make a coffee and spark one up!
Ken Mattingly passed away today 11-2-23. RIP
And here we go for another landing! Another beautiful episode about Apollo 16! Thank you LM5.
Hey LM5, I was wondering if you know if the images from the Apollo missions (and others) that are in the National Archive catalog are free to use. Why some of them say they are possibly protected causing "Copyright".
If they are from NASA missions they are copyright free as far as I am aware
Strange, I didn't recall how seriously abortion was considered on Apollo 16. I was 18 years old, maybe youthful optimism blotted that out of my mind, heh!
Awesome work, as usual, LM5!
Yeah it was really touch and go for almost 5 hours. Thanks for the comment and support
Outstanding!
Great work Simon, thanks for posting!
Always welcome Mike
I hope we get more video from you soon! It’s been a minute.
@@campbellmays9900 am on holiday at present, taking a break from the video work and am on annual leave enjoying a break from work too. I have half of the final day of Apollo 10 complete, so will be working on that on my return
@@lunarmodule5 I was talking to Mike
@@campbellmays9900 lol 😂
God speed the crew of Apollo 16
To lunarmodule5.....is there a way of contacting you by email or website? I would like to further discuss on Apollo 16 and other missions as well. Keep up the great work!
Hi lox lunar_module_5@yahoo.co.uk
Was this 11/71? Can not recall the date. Hope Artemis 2 is a Day time launch in 4thQ of 24.
04/72...
i wonder if you could do sts 126 if you could
I have a lot of the audio but not all the video of the EVAs - Its something maybe for another day when i can source all the footage needed and give it the time it deserves to construct
by the way. they were filmed by Soviet cosmonaut Leonov in the orbit of the moon. Leonov filmed several Apollo missions orbiting the moon.

Clean out your space helmet and adjust your O2.
What is this? A cartoon? Is this a CGI version of what happened? Why is it so clear?
