  • Apollo 8 - The Launch - Full Mission 01
This video details the countdown and launch of Apollo 8 on 21st December 1968. It is the first of an intended series which will cover the entire mission from countdown to splashdown.
A lot of the countdown video sequences are not available at present and I have pooled TV coverage and some documentary footage to fill in the gaps. From about T-6 minutes the launch is as seen that day through LET and Skirt Jettison when I have used Orbiter to simulate the sequences through to orbit.
The video is presented in 16:9 to allow use of photos and captions on the right of the screen. Apollo Guidence Computer programme DSKY is used once the sppacecraft is in orbit to show Mission Elapsed Time. The video ends with a replay of the launch followed by the first crew ccommunications out over the Canary Island station on orbit 1.
    NOTE -
Some sequences are silent during the countdown so I could include "live" footage in the correct order and timeline.
During the launch of Apollo 8 the astronauts communications with the Capcom were not broadcast - these are heard on the replay of the launch later in the video.
All Video and audio is courtesy of NASA.
My thanks to Jim Lovell for providing technical assistance during this Full Mission series.

In the spring of 1969, Apollo 8 was on a world tour. I was 11-1/2 years old. Apollo 8 was brought to a small german town right outside of the American Housing Area (Sportsfield) at Hanau, Germany. My friends and I were biking around the area and we stopped in the town and there was Apollo 8 strapped down onto a flatbed truck with the hatch wide-open for the world to see. I remember seeing the capsule and how discolored it was and how the heat shield was charred from the steep angled re-entry into the atmosphere that it survived. Whew! Awesome! What a treat that was for us! We didn't even know that it was on tour.

Just heard that Jack King has passed away today - he was The voice of launch control, probably most remembered for his commentary on Apollo 11s launch, but also for this launch, the first moon mission and many others like the Gemini 6 abort. I have listened to Jacks commentary over and over on the audio loops while putting together the Full Mission series, and I am so glad I will continue to hear his comments for many, many years to come. RIP Jack King - 1931 - 2015 - LM5

What I don't understand is why outstanding episodes of our American history like this only warrant 70k views and no one has been on this thread for a year it seems. And the same thing goes for other great Apollo threads/videos on CZcams. Yet (by accident) I landed on one of these dimwitted conspiracy theory sites a week or so back and it was like a hornets nest of activity with 10mil views!?!? What are we coming to here? I'am looking forward to this series, for me Apollo 8 is on of the most historic flights and executed by one of the best crews.

Apollo 8 was an incredible display of American engineering first time human eyes see the darkside of the moon. Tomorrow the SLS will produce 8.8 million lbs of thrust setting a new record most powerful rocket ever brought to service in human history. Although I still say the Saturn V used it's own engines didn't have booster rockets attached.
