USS Scorpion SUBLOSS SUBSUNK
The USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Skipjack-class nuclear submarine of the United States Navy that tragically sank on May 22, 1968, with the loss of all 99 crew members. The submarine was returning to its home port in Norfolk, Virginia, after a deployment in the Mediterranean. The exact cause of the sinking remains uncertain, though theories range from an internal explosion to mechanical failure or involvement in Cold War espionage activities. The wreckage was discovered in October 1968 at a depth of 9,800 feet in the Atlantic Ocean. The loss of the Scorpion remains one of the most mysterious and somber incidents in U.S. naval history.
The term "SUBLOSS" in the context of the U.S. Navy refers to the catastrophic loss of a submarine, typically involving the sinking and destruction of the vessel, often with significant loss of life.
The term "SUBSUNK" in the U.S. Navy refers to the confirmed sinking of a submarine. It is a formal designation used when a submarine is lost, indicating that it is submerged and has likely suffered catastrophic damage, making recovery and survival of the crew unlikely.
side bar correction: USS Thresher, the other nuke sub the US Navy lost, sank in 1963.

I am not one for believing conspiracy theories; however, you can’t say the Soviets were not involved, because “they” only knew of 1 sub in the Caribbean and same subs in the Mediterranean. We have seen time and time again “they” (US Government) tends to lie as much as it tells the truth. I’m not saying this was the cause, by you can flippantly dismiss it.

Personally, I’ve never been convinced by the trash disposal theory because it just doesn’t seem fast enough. Even if an incursion of salt water caused a fire, I still think the boat would have enough time to surface or send some sort of communication. Is there something I’m not understanding? Also, some of the SOSUS data is pretty compelling. Perhaps again, there’s something I don’t understand.

The Chinas weren't partners, just suppliers of components; the hull being based on a Soviet design (the super structure is Indian), similarly the Brahmos cruise missiles are a localised Soviet 800 Onik design, as are the AK guns and anti submarine launchers, while the turbines are US, the diesel engines are German, the radars and BARAK air defense missiles are from a joint venture with Israel, the helicopters US, the 76mm cannon and the project management are Italian, while the concept, colour, ensigns, uniforms, doctrine, are derived from British patterns.

The Russian's sank her while she was on a recon mission on a Russian Flotilla exercise. The ex-Navy traitor John Walker secrets given to the Russians enabled them to detect the Scorpion & subsequently use an ASROC to sink her (partly in retaliation in the perceived sinking & U.S. recovery of the russian boomer K-129).

Cutting and welding steel before the Design and 3D Models are complete, for a proven off the shelf design; sounds a bit backwards, then again the FFG-62 label is rather backwards, unlike the UK/CAN/AUS/NOR/... TYPE-26, or the German F-126 programmes. Those NEW Designs have complete 3D models, and hulls, that are currently being fitted out, unlike the off the shelf, time and beer token saving, US programme. They may also be as, if not more capable.

  • @taraswertelecki3786

I've heard of the MK-45 nuclear armed torpedoes, I had no idea their range was THAT limited in relation to the lethal bursting radius of the nuclear warhead......no doubt the crews were not sorry to see them withdrawn from service. No doubt there's nuclear armed MK-48's and especially MK-48 ADCAP torpedoes in service, but the U.S. Navy will neither confirm or deny their deployment at sea. As for the cause of Scorpion's loss, is it possible a battery explosion killed or incapacitated everyone in the forward compartments, leaving the boat to wander uncontrollably until it sank to collapse depth? If so, the Scorpion was lost for the same reason the Argentine submarine San Juan was lost. Hopefully, the U.S. Navy will declassify documents from its investigation so the families at least could get some closure.

Minor security point; you stated 'the boats I was on never had it [Mk 45]'. When asked if there were any onboard the ships I served, the only answer was: I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear material onboard, but it is nuclear capable. I know in other videos you have made, you stated various ships that you served on. I know - I'm nit-picking on this, but it was pounded into me (sometimes figuratively and sometimes actually) for 20+ years. Not something I forgot.

I have no knowledge but it sounded to me like a device which was being tuned to a longitudinal pressure wave. Just like a blown musical instrument you tune it by varying the length of the column. Let me guess at this. You expect some frequently. It has bounced off many things but if your detector is at the centre of a curved plate close to a flat plate it will preferentially accept a certain frequency. The frequency which is selected by how the plates approach each other. You can steer the direction of reception by tilting one plate, slightly to the side or further round. Just a guess.

For what it's worth, I was on a 594 (the Haddock) and a 637 (the Pintado) in the late 70's- mid 80's and both boats had CO Standing Orders that the Chop had to be present for TDU Ops to ensure they were done correctly, so what you're saying may have something to do with that... hmmmmmm.....

Weren't the periscope and mast(s) in the raised position as shown on the wreck photos? Wouldn't this suggest they were at PD? If so, and a message could be flashed out very quickly, why no message? Also, I believe the wreck analysis indicated the batteries were damaged in a way consistent with their explosion. So, it does sound like a battery issue, but why no SOS message?

A couple of thoughts: The lead-acid battery (Guppy-1 Mod c) evolves hydrogen during normal discharge as well as during a charging evolution. That H2 is removed from the atmosphere via the CO/H2 burner, which converts CO into CO2 and converts H2 into H2O via a catalyst. The H2O (water) drains into the AMR (Aux. Machinery Room) bilge and is eventually pumped overboard. The CO2 is captured in the CO2 Scrubber and pumped overboard. Also, though the loss of the Scorpion occurred nearly 8 years after Thresher, SUBSAFE had not been fully implemented in the fleet and boats like the Scorpion, built before Thresher were not built to the SUBSAFE standard and had yet to be retrofitted in a major yard-period.
