    That is a bold statement to call a PLAN ship a copy. I served in the Pacific and was moored across the pier from one of these ships in Singapore. I can tell you this particular ship isn't some cheap copy.
    Chinese ships are built on a soviet base design, so their weapons and propulsion systems are very similar. Electronics relating to fire control are based on western designs. The PLAN aquired French SONAR systems to replace their outdated soviet hardware(soviet SONAR is terrible in passive mode compared to US systems).
    Chinese vessels are practically the best of both eastern and western thinking on military technology. The major deficiencies for the PLAN is their low number of carriers(they're working on this) and their small nuclear sub fleet. I doubt that China will focus on nuclear sub developement until their carrier fleet and diesel submarine force fully matures.

      I've also seen Japanese subs pull into our home port in Pearl Harbor. The Japanese have manpads(stingers) posted on the fairwater planes of their subs when surfaced. They base their subs on old US diesel sub designs before we went full nuclear navy. They're decent boats all around.

      JC.Couper from Scottland founded the shipyard after the 1st Opium War and ran it until 1860s; then the shipyards were sold to then Hongkong-based Jardines (the very same Jardines we know of today). And years follows, the shipyards was sold again to the Viceroy of Liangguang Liu Kunyi in 1876. Would be cool with a video detailing the actual and perceived benefits hyper- and supersonic missiles. With modern radar you still see it coming and all your anti-air defense missile needs to do is intercept it before it hits the ship, unless the missile has some sort of adaptive avoidance measures it shouldn't matter much how fast the incoming missile is as it's path is already predicted. To me it seems like cheap sea skimming cruise missiles (regardless if they are subsonic) with a time on target style attack designed to overwhelm defenses is the way to go.

    • @liefsillion2825
      @liefsillion2825 Před 5 měsíci +1

      The effectiveness of an AShM depends on many different factors, of which the velocity of the missile is but only one. Here on CZcams the importance of velocity is generally over-rated as a means to generate click bait and advertising revenue.
      Yes, velocity does make a missile more dangerous because it reduces the reaction time available to air defence systems. However, a higher velocity generates more heat due to friction as the missile moves through the atmosphere, increasing the IR signature of the threat. Limitations imposed by materials require that hypersonic missiles fly at a higher altitude to prevent them from burning up. This makes them detectable at greater distances, allowing more time for an air defence system to react. And, yes, hypersonic missiles are more destructive than subsonic ones with equivalent warhead yields because kinetic energy varies with the square of the velocity.
      However, subsonic sea skimming missiles remain very dangerous because they approach below the radar horizon of a ship's air defence system, leaving little time to react. This advantage can be diminished by having persistent linked airborne sensors with look-down radar but this is difficult for a single ship to provide because they might only deploy a single helicopter, which is not always available, and there are limits to the size of the antenna you can mount on an aircraft which limits radar power output, sensitivity, and range. The US was slow to get on the hypersonic missile bandwagon partly because sea skimming missiles are so deadly, and because more expensive hypersonic missiles are not necessarily going to be more effective.
      Also, mounting a cryogenically cooled IR seeker on the nose of a hot hypersonic missile is not an easy engineering problem to solve, implying that a hypersonic missile would need to employ a short range active radar homing seeker, which can be defeated by electronic means, or be unguided on terminal approach, or be dependent upon an external update provided by an independent sensor which needs to be in position and connected at the time the update is required. And, then there is the communication and sensor blackout problem experienced by a missile which is enveloped in a shroud of plasma, the thickness of which increases at lower altitude, unless it slows down.
      The most important characteristics of an air defence system is the number of layers it provides and the number of targets it can simultaneously engage. For the sake of argument, if we assume that each layer has a 50% chance of intercept, then a system with 2 layers allows a threat to have a 25% chance of success. With 3 layers this falls to 12.5%, and with 4 it falls to 6.25%. Organic air defence, provided by a carrier or shore based assets, can provide an additional outer layer. An effective counter strategy is to deploy more missiles in a ToT attack in order to saturate the air defence system. However, missiles are not cheap, and magazine depth on warships is limited for both offensive and defensive weapons. Attacking aircraft are limited in the number of AShMs they can carry. A swarm of cheap drones is likely to more effective than an expensive hypersonic missile because drones can approach from below the radar horizon, have small radar signatures, can saturate the air defence system, and can progressively deplete a ship's magazines. If you can keep sending drones then it is only a matter of time until one of them will get through, and if the damage caused degrades the air defence system, then you can cripple a very expensive warship with relatively cheap drones. This is why laser weapons are becoming more important. Laser weapons require sustained energy generation instead of magazines.
      You do not need a heavy warhead, or high kinetic energy, to achieve a mission kill on a warship which is packed with fuel and explosives, especially if the munitions are stored above the water line. All you need to do is initiate an uncontrollable fire, or alternatively disable the ship's expose sensors. Western warships cost a lot more than cheaper mass produced Chinese ones partly because Western warships have more water-tight compartments and better damage control systems. This, combined with better training of Western crews to fight fire i.e. every sailor is a firefighter vs dedicated fire fighting teams, makes them more survivable. A large fleet of Chinese warships which will burn to the waterline following a single strike, even if they are equipped with hypersonic AShMs, is not necessarily more powerful than a smaller fleet of Western warships if they can absorb more damage. A damaged warship can be repaired but a sunken warship cannot be replaced in the short term.
      Another consideration is that a missile is useless if you are unable to detect and continuously update target tracking data. The open ocean is a big place, and ships are unpredictable mobile targets whose area of uncertainty grows rapidly with time. Satellites are fast moving and do not remain overhead for long. Airborne assets with powerful radars are scarce, have limited operational range, and require refuelling to stay on station. The ability to strike a ship depends upon a kill chain which can be disrupted in many ways.
      So, hypersonic missiles sound scary but whether they will actually work or not under combat conditions is yet to be tested. First generation Exocet subsonic sea skimming missiles proved to be deadly for British warships during the Falklands War. Subsonic sea skimming missiles are known to work. One should not jump to conclusions and simply assume that Chinese military propaganda is indeed fact. Information warfare can be just as, if not more, effective than weapons systems!

      @@michaelkendall662 thanks for the info. I just looked up, the current Mk 48 ADCAP sub-launched ship killer has a range of between 38 or 50 km depending on the speed. Meanwhile, the Mk 54 lightweight from a ship tube has a range of 9 km. place that on top of an ASROC- RUM-139C which can throw the Mk 54 out 22 km before it starts to swim and a ship could, in theory, strike a sub out to 31 km (more likely less than that to give the Mk54 time to find the sub). So, a Sub could still safely strike a ship if it was between 31 and 50 km away. Of course, the ship can use an MH-60R to drop that Mk 54 on top of a sub more than 100 km from the ship, that's the best defence. But I don't see a reason for the tube launchers on a ship anymore, if the sub is within 9 km the ship is already dead. I would think a couple ASROC's the Mk41 VLS in case they get surprised and can't get the MH-60 up in time (or sea state is too high to launch), but if you are actively hunting subs then having two MH-60's so that one can be up all the time would be best (in my opinion).

      Yes, I noted the 40 year time, I wasn't trying to say you were wrong, I just listed the current weapon ranges to show that now, in 2024, it no longer seems to make sense to have tube launchers on a ship, unless the lightweight ship launched torpedo can be used to intercept the incoming heavy weight torpedo like an SM2 would intercept an incoming Harpoon type missile. Do you recall what the range of the sub-launched torpedos was at the time?

  • @MotoGreciaMarios
    @MotoGreciaMarios Před 5 měsíci +1

    Something that's bugging me about ship specs is the maximum speed. 6 years ago I embarked on a big ferry boat (double car & truck deck) that went Igoumenitsa- Ancona (Greece-Italy) in the Adriatic sea and while onboard I kept taking readings of speed with my phone's GPS. It was a constant and very consistent 52Km/h which is equivalent to 28 knots. How the hell is such a big & bulky ship able to cruise at that speed and the sleek military vessels that don't carry such weight only manage it as top speed? So, I'm not buying the military numbers - the true ones are definitely much higher.

They could potentially be cheap one day, but it is not today. I'd wager the cost is not dissimilar to a phalanx salvo right now. The advantage is the laser can be used in a lot more circumstances where a salvo of hot metal would not be appreciated or safe- drones can easily use neutral or allied civvy vessels as meat shields. Maybe even used on civvy drones in port.

Our latest fishing boat 055A, the 10th one is about to be outfitted. We have reserved a complete power reserve of the Aleburk 3 for electric grilled fish. If necessary, we will equip the next batch of 055B with CM40 gas turbines and continue to install four, which will be two times the power level of the Aleburke 3.
