Gold ... Robert Renard (Otto Dobrindt) Tanzorchester (1934)
Today's video features the Leitmotiv from the 1934 movie science fiction movie "Gold / L' Or", directed by Karl Hartl. "Gold" tells the story of a scientist (Hans Albers) who finds a way to turn metal into gold... Realizing his invention will do more harm than good, he takes drastic measures... The record was previously featured in a video with another recording by Robert Renard / Otto Dobrindt. In this video the track is presented with scenes from "Gold".
In this video :
0:00 - 0:14 - Opening Credits
0:15 - 0:49 - The Stars of "Gold"
0:50 - 1:33 - Turning metal into gold
1:34 - 1:48 - Brigitte Helm and Hans Albers
1:49 - 2:04 - Revolt (Hans Albers and Michael Bohnen)
2:05 - 2:32 - Inferno
2:33 - 2:37 - Otto Dobrindt conducting
Just like "F.P. 1 antwortet nicht" (also directed by Hartl), "Gold" was made in both a German and French version. The lead actors of the German version were Hans Albers and Brigitte Helm. Albers was replaced by Pierre Blanchar for the French version while Helm who was fluent in French remained as the female lead. Like Lilian Harvey and Käthe von Nagy the statuesque Brigitte Helm starred in many multilingual versions of her movies. She was as popular in France as she was in Germany. "Gold" was probably the only science fiction movie made in Germany between 1933 and 1945 (apart from the 1939 short "Weltraumschiff 1 startert"). Its sets were designed by Otto Hunte who has also designed the sets for Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" which had starred Brigitte Helm as the female lead Maria / the Machine-Person (Maschinenmensch). After starring in two more movies Helm retired in 1935, married the industrialist Hugo Kunheim and moved to Switzerland. She refused all interview request in her later years.
The video features sequences from "Gold" which have been restored and upscaled to a 4K resolution. They were then colorized (mostly manually using A.I. software). This is purely for entertainment purposes. The colorization is NOT historically correct but the video tries to give an impression of what the spectacular sets and costumes may have looked like.
The record is a pressing made for the French market and in quite bad condition!

Today's video features the legendary song " Flieger, grüß' mir die Sonne" by Marek Weber (1888-1964) and his orchestra with vocals by "Die 5 Songs". The record is a French Disque Gramophone pressing which is in quite battered condition yet plays very well. Interesting to me is the contrast between the "massive sound" of Marek Weber's orchestra and the intimate singing of the vocal quartet. The ...
