  • Today's video features a rarity: the French version of "Mein Herz hat heut' Premiere" (My heart is heaving its premiere today) from the 1942 musical comedy "Wir machen Musik". In French the title became "Partir au bout du Monde" (Leaving for the other part of the world) and as such has a completely different meaning.
The singer is Nila Cara (1916-99) - one of the most fascinating and mysterious voices of the wartime years in France. Known for her long blonde hair and a husky deep voice, Nila Cara made only four (commercially issued) recordings for Pathé between 1942 and 1944 (she made a few more in the 1950s). These records are quite rare and highly sought after. Her singing style is very bluesy as are themes of her songs : "Je vends des hot-dogs" talks about racism and drug addiction, "Pour cent mille francs par mois" about prostitution", "Je vous déteste les hommes" (from the 1941 movie "La Venus Aveugle") about the poor treatment of women by men... As such the songs from "Wir machen Musik" (French titel : Vive la Musique) seem like an odd choice. Nila Cara recorded French versions of "Mein Herz hat heut' Premiere" as well as "Wann wirst du wieder bei mir sein?" which became "M'ami, je garde mes baisers" (Lit. My love, I'm saving my kisses for you). When listening to these songs, they sound very different from the original versions recorded by Ilse Werner. The song "M'ami, je garde mes baisers" will be featured in another video. According to the little information that is available about Nila Cara, she continued to sing in cabarets all over the world and lived in Argentina in the early 1950s, where she made recordings ("Donne-Moi" by Aznavour and Bécaud) and appeared in the movie "Más pobre que una Laucha" (Lit. Poorer than a mouse) as Mme Patachón, a cabaret singer. Her performance of the song "Béguin" can be seen here : • Video . Nila Cara's final performance was in the afternoon tv show "La Chance aux Chansons" in 1990.
The video features sequences from "Wir machen Musik" which have been restored and upscaled to a 4K resolution. They were then colorized purely for entertainment purposes. The colorization tis not historically correct but it does give an impression of what the sets and costumes may have looked like.

"Partir au bout du Monde" / "M'ami je garde mes baisers" was issued on the red Pathé label with "PD" catalogue numbers which is somewhat of mystery. The red label was mostly used for classical music yet in the summer and autumn of 1943 several singers under contract to Pathé recorded songs which were subsequently released on the red instead of the usual dark blue label. The one thing they have in common is that all were translations of songs featured in German movies. These records are extremely rare and include the following artists and songs (I only have the Rose Avril, Nila Cara and a few Lucienne Dugard records in my collection) :
    PD 26/ Lucienne Dugard :

"Wann wirst du wieder bei mir sein" singt sie als Blues. Das Video ist jedoch noch in Vorbereitung.
