  • Today's video features the rumba "Kautschuk" (Lit Rubber) from the 1938 adventure movie "Kautschuk" (aka "The Green Hell") starring René Deltgen, Gustav Diessl, Vera von Langen and Jose Alcantara. The version featured in this video was recorded by Eugen Wolff and his orchestra for Odeon in November 1938. Interestingly the title is spelled incorrectly (Kautschuck ) on the label.
"Kautschuk" tells the story of the explorer Henry Wickham (René Deltgen) who smuggled rubber seeds into the United Kingdom - thus breaking the Brazilian monopoly on rubber. "Kautschuk" features exciting sequences of the Amazon shot by Franz und Edgar Eichhorn as part of a documentary. These were sold to the Ufa Studios who subsequently integrated them into the movie. Scenes from "Kautschuk" were later integrated into the low budget movie "Amazon Quest" (USA, 1949). Vera von Langen plays Mary, the consul's daughter caught between Wickham and Don Alonzo (Gustav Diessl). Beautiful Vera von Langen (1910-67) only made a handful of movies. One of her husbands between 1952 and 1957 was Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. She owned the famous 33 carat "Krupp" diamond which was bought by Richard Burton after her death. he gifted the famous diamond to his then wife Elizabeth Taylor". Since then it is known as the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond. In 2011 it was sold at auction for 8,818,500 US Dollars.
    In this video :
    0:00 Opening Credits
    0:50 Mary and Henry
    1:00 Mary and Don Alonso
    1:08 Into the jungle
    1:18 Rubber !
    1:30 Crossing the river
    1:59 Indigenous people
    2:15 Python attack
    2:28 Fever
The video features sequences from "Kautschuk" which have been restored and upscaled to a 4K resolution. They were then colorized mostly manually and purely for entertainment purposes. The colorization is NOT historically correct but it tries to recreate the warm colors of early Agfacolor movies and does give an impression of what the sets and costumes may have looked like.
