Hi, everyone! I'm Stephen, and I am thrilled to welcome you to "Surviving Schizophrenia," a channel of hope, strength, and community for anyone journeying through mental health challenges.
At age 12, I spent two weeks at UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital. I emerged with a diagnosis of schizophreniform disorder that quickly developed into schizophrenia, accompanied by an anxiety disorder. I have treatment-resistant childhood onset schizophrenia.
You'll find inspiring stories, practical advice, and a raw yet compassionate view of living with a misunderstood condition. But more than that, you'll find a community. As I share my navigation through these unpredictable seas, I invite you to join in, share your tales, or listen to the echoes of triumph and perseverance from different corners of the world.
So please subscribe and become part of a future where we approach mental health with empathy, understanding, and genuine support.
With gratitude and friendship, Stephen

Schizophrenia and Insomnia: My Battle for Rest
Hi Everyone! I'm Stephen. In this profoundly personal video, I invite you to join me as I share my experiences living with schizophrenia for the past 12 years. One of the most significant challenges I face is the struggle to get a good night's sleep, which profoundly impacts my daily life and overall well-being.
The Impact of Insomnia on My Life
I discuss how my sleep schedule has been severely disrupted, with my best sleep often occurring between 8 AM and 12 PM. This irregular sleep pattern affects every aspect of my life, from my eating habits to my cognitive functioning. My extreme tiredness makes it challenging to focus, think clearly, and create content for this channel.
The Vicious Cycle of Anxiety and Insomnia
Anxiety plays a significant role in my inability to sleep well. When I'm anxious, my heart rate elevates, and my mind races with rapid thoughts, making it nearly impossible to fall asleep. This lack of sleep then feeds back into my anxiety, creating a vicious cycle that can be incredibly difficult to break.
Insomnia's Effect on Schizophrenia Symptoms
I also touch on how the lack of sleep can exacerbate other symptoms of schizophrenia. When I'm exhausted, I become more susceptible to hallucinations and other mental health challenges. I must prioritize getting a good night's sleep to prevent my condition from worsening.
Reflecting on My Journey with Insomnia
Throughout the video, I share some of my earliest experiences with insomnia, dating back to when I first fell ill. I remember staying up until 3 AM, trying to tire myself by reading books or playing games on my phone. While my sleep has improved since then, I still face a constant battle.
The Impact on My Daily Routine
The extreme tiredness I experience affects not only my mental health but also my ability to maintain a consistent routine and engage in activities I enjoy, such as exercising regularly. It also makes it challenging to create content for this channel and maintain a regular posting schedule, which I'm working towards improving.
Strategies for Coping with Insomnia
Despite the struggles, I remain hopeful and share some of the strategies I'm using to cope with insomnia. These include exercising, watching comedies to relax, and drinking sleepy-time tea to help calm my mind and body before bed. I also emphasize the importance of being kind to myself and taking the time I need to rest and recuperate.
The Importance of Seeking Professional Help
I acknowledge that if my sleep issues don't improve on their own, I will seek the guidance of my psychiatrist. It's essential to prioritize mental health and proactively address any challenges. Seeking professional help is a crucial part of managing schizophrenia and insomnia.
A Message of Hope and Resilience
Throughout the video, I maintain a message of hope and resilience. I remind viewers that while the journey may be difficult, it's possible to navigate the challenges of schizophrenia and insomnia. I've faced similar struggles and have always found a way to overcome them, and I believe anyone can do the same with the proper support and strategies.
Conclusion
As I conclude the video, I thank those who have watched and supported me. I encourage viewers to prioritize their own mental health and well-being and to seek help when needed. By sharing my story, I hope to provide comfort, support, and understanding to others facing similar challenges and remind them that they are not alone in their journey.

Are you thinking of having family
Yes, emptyness and deep Fear
Having a narcissistic parent causes schizophrenia I believe...all the gas lighting from being young....its no coincidence.
May all your hopes and dreams come true Stephen.
You have healed dear you are blessed
Keep it up God is good always
I am happy for you my guy
Let's hope this is a change of season sleeping phase thing. Whatever it is, it is tough. I'll give you some homework to listen to if you like. It may put you to sleep which might be good but if not it will give you lots of material for your podcast. The podcast series is called " Awakening from the Meaning Crisis" by John Vervaeke.. I found it excellent. There are 50 episodes. Take care Stephen, you are a great warrior!
I had this illness as a child and only found out i had it when i was 48 had no help or support from anyone so lucky to have such a good Dad
I can hundred percent understand how your parents feel about leaving you unprepared in extreme circumstances. As I am in the same situation as your parents. Take good care of yourself! Be strong! Stephen
Hi Stephen, I am interested in knowing what side effects occurred during the beginning period of your Clozapine titration, for example, fast heart rate?
This is just a western trap.🪤
You very well articulated Stephen...big ups young one!!👍
You are awesome man. Just keep on going . You seem very determined and that will take you to knew places you could not even imagine.
Hey Stephen, stay strong buddy🌄
That must be awful. I do sleep, but I keep waking up repeatedly in the night.
There is a lady with schizophrenia who has been youtubing her experiences living with this illness. She has recently tried the medical keto way of eating and has after 3 months gone into remission and most of her symptoms have disappeared. She has been placed on the lowest does of medication. I would love to hear about your journey trying the keto way of eating and talking about any changes you experience.
I admire your courage to encouragement for others... Keep up your efforts 👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏

I'd love to be friends, ur such a good inspiration and a nice friend to have.
Am I the only one here who doesn’t know anyone with it but wanted to learn about it.
I like this channel's thumbnails. Very straightforward and straight to the point. Nothing click-baity.
Stephen you are a very brave guy and I pray that you will find a great partner that will help and love you try and stay positive and I always say the power of prayer is always good. God bless you young man.
Hiya, I’m new to the channel. I’ve always had a deep interest in the way the brain operates, internally and externally (sounds funny). Has it ever crossed your mind of schizophrenia being a spiritual battle? Rather than a physical one taking place in just the brain? This isn’t my definite belief, but through things I’ve seen, heard, learnt, and even experienced, I’m starting to lean more towards that. I could be wrong! But if that sounds somewhat plausible to you, I hope you find more of what you’re looking for through it.
I appreciate immensely you sharing what you experience. It helps me understand better a loved one.
❤❤❤❤
You are in my thoughts and prayer..😢 dnt worry u will heal slowly. Just be strong and positive in ur thoughts and believe in God and urself..its hard but I pray u goin to get better everyday. God bless u. Sending love and light to lighten up ur life. Tke it easy..you are a very smart lad. ❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Steven, thank you for sharing, my son is 22 years old now and having Schizophrenia too after I found out around 9 months ago. My son went into trouble in compulsory national service as a soldier in army, in Singapore... Due to this illness, he has committed A war without knowing the consequences and facing a court marshal soon. As a father, I am trying to help him in whatever ways I can. I also hope to understand more on how you could control it and becomes better. Following your updates soon. 🙏
Thanks Stephen I am very happy that you are doing so much better, you have a lovely smile. Reading is really good to take things off your mind, keep reading it takes one to different places of the story. I am.praying for your full recovery. I am from South Africa.
I just found your videos and I want to say thank you. You really help give me insight into what my little sister has gone through that she can’t explain to us. She has Down syndrome and she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and psychosis at the age of 13, it was scary and heartbreaking she, was gone for 3 years before the doctors we could get her back. She is 27 now and she was never able to express how she feels about dealing with this as she can’t still sometimes whisper to herself when left alone for a while. I’m very thankful for you, I hope you continue in good and better health
I’m the same
Good for you keep up the good work. Im proud of you!!
Stephen you are an example of A POWERFUL FIGHTER on the LIFE FRONTLINE battle. On that self positive outlook I just wish your wishes come true. STAY POSITIVE STEPHEN!
You are such a Hero Stephen!!
I love your family! And really thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences.
Thank you for sharing, Stephen. You've done a very good job of making these videos. Watching your video always makes me think of my son. He was such a bright and good young man just like you. Now he is stuck in a severe relapse. We are still observing the result of another medication. Clozapine will be then next, if this one didn't work out. As a mother, I am really hesitate to put him on a medication like Clozapine. I watched your videos with your dad about your experience with it. I don't know if my son is able to choose right now, what decision will he make? It's so hard for me to decide. And it's extremely hard to suffer everyday...
Hello Steve...I feel so motivated by your story....I found your CZcams page recently....how do you manage been on medication and weight gain?
I know because I told the both of us. 😂
Thank you both.
What about self triggering. 99+ percent of stuff is about OTHER people triggering it, but what if it triggers every time you eat.😢
I stopped driving for 6 months because of a fender bender and my schizoaffective disorder acting up. Now that I feel a little better, I started driving again. I don’t drive tired or when I have anxiety. I’m obsessed with being able to drive and it feels great. I just need to be careful. I think people with schizophrenia are careful drivers and know when they’re unable to take the wheel.
I sat here feeling for you both. My Mother suffered from this all her life and was hospitalized many times. You know what i would never have changed her for anybody else. she was caring, loving, clean, tidy and looked after us all and managed to run a perfect home even when she was at her worst points. I bet your dad is worried about the future, but you will cope and live a normal life as possible as long you have loving people around you. My mum had years of suffering this condition and lived up to 89, she would still be here if it was not for cancer. She settled down in her later years with no more episodes. Your relationship will always be special together like me and my late mum. Keep up the good work. Look forward to restarting your new life. It will come and you will find happiness. Thanks for you Videos
Hey man thanks for making this video. I have this too as well as autism. Do you suffer with tinnitus as well?
Tysm 😊 your a amazing person ❤
Well done Stephen your effort is amazing and encouraging. May you go from strength to strength. I do not have schizophrenia but admire your positive efforts.
I wish you both all the best. You're very fortunate to have eachother. I wish you both comfort and kindness and of course health and safety. I have two brothers with schizophrenia. The onset of their illness was at age fifteen for both of them. My oldest brother doesn't have the same degree in severity of symptoms. I understand and appreciate how heartbreaking it is to see a loved one live with this disorder. Like Steven, there were no early signs socially or cognitively. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge and also for your desire to learn more about schizophrenia and ways to manage it. I can see the kindness in both of you.
Hi Steven went through 3 months of being sectioned last month. I briefly went into an experience and wanted to share it here. I literally became the devil and talked to the whole world, i could hear this cheering as if people had awoken to me being the real God. This happened in a seclusion rooom, i remember hearing my mum and looking out the window and could hear her calling me and saying why cant i see her, then she said my face looked hollow. Also i had this ability to talk through minds and believed i was in the year 2050. Another thing that happened is i was strapped to a stretcher with electrodes attached to my head and they fried my brain, they were trying to kill me and realised i was immortal. At other times i was being tested on and the scientists said they had permission as the government had run out of money so we were been used as lab rats. Scary shit
It was the worst experience of my life. I have Schizoaffective disorder
God bless you dear boy!! Be proud of your scholastic achievements which you attained despite your mental problems. If you make that your foundation, you don't need to fear the future. You WILL succeed again! ❤
Any girl would be lucky to have you Stephen. You are so sweet. Try not to worry so much. Sending hugs to you man.,
