I'm Confronting Schizophrenia Loneliness

  • Hi everyone! I'm Stephen. Welcome to an intimate glimpse into my life as I take you on a poignant journey through my experiences with schizophrenia, loneliness, and the intricate complexities of mental health. This video, filmed amidst the tranquil backdrop of Point Vicente in Southern California, delves deep into the heart and mind as I attempt to reconcile feelings of depression, isolation, and the stigma that often accompanies mental illness.
From the outset, it is evident that Stephen's intention is not just to share his own story but to shine a light on the often overlooked and misunderstood challenges faced by individuals living with schizophrenia. His candid reflection on recent weeks provides a raw, unfiltered look into the emotional turmoil many suffer silently. Stephen's self-awareness and vulnerability stand out, especially when he recognizes his depressive episodes - a challenge familiar to many who struggle with mental health.
Stephen's recounting of his battle with COVID-19 further layers his narrative, offering viewers a unique perspective on the convergence of physical and mental health challenges. His descriptions of feeling "hollow," unmotivated, and empty, even amidst the beauty of Point Vicente's scenic coastline, capture the quintessential essence of depression. It's a powerful testament that mental health issues can affect anyone, anywhere, and anytime.
Yet, even in despair, Stephen finds a beacon of hope. A simple card from a cousin is a turning point, reminding him of the power of familial love and the often-underestimated impact of small gestures. This personal anecdote serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most minor acts of kindness can make a significant difference in someone's life.
Stephen's journey is not just about self-reflection but also about community and societal perceptions. His candid discourse on the lack of social connections and relationships in his life is a heartbreaking reflection of the challenges many face with mental illnesses. The stigma, heightened anxiety, and the very nature of schizophrenia can hinder social interaction. Yet, Stephen's resilience shines through as he acknowledges the need for human connection and strives to combat his loneliness.
Amidst personal anecdotes and raw emotions, Stephen also touches upon the broader implications of how society perceives mental health. His dream of speaking on larger platforms, like talk shows or TED Talks, underscores a deep-rooted desire to de-stigmatize schizophrenia and encourage open conversations about mental health. Stephen's brave stance against negative portrayals of mental illnesses in the media resonates strongly, urging viewers to reconsider and challenge their preconceptions.
Visually, Stephen invites his audience to share his surroundings' beauty. Shots of the breathtaking Point Vicente coastline serve as a serene backdrop to his narrative and a symbolic representation of life's ebbs and flows. The ocean's vastness mirrors the complexities of the human mind, reminding viewers of the infinite depths and potential within each individual.
Concluding on a hopeful note, Stephen looks ahead with optimism. Despite the hurdles, he believes in the power of change, growth, and community. His story is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the belief that even in the darkest times, there's always a glimmer of light on the horizon.
Engage with Stephen on this heartfelt journey, and join him in his mission to advocate for mental health awareness. Your support, in the form of likes and subscriptions, is a step towards building a more compassionate and understanding world for those battling mental illnesses. Remember, every conversation is a step towards change. Let Stephen's story inspire you to be a part of that change.

My 28 year old son says this same thing. He wishes he had friends. As a mom I always feel so sad for him but I know his anxiety gets in the way. There are so many young people who are feeling this same way that can’t imagine why we can’t get friendship groups started. You have so many people who love you so this was quite surprising to me. I appreciate your honesty and openness. Stephen you are so talented and creative there has got to be a way to create these type of groups around the country.

I do believe a lot of people deal with loneliness if fact it is an epidemic in some places. Not just you Steven but you are making a difference in making your videos. I think you are one of those people whom others naturally gravitate to as you seem to be a nice human being and you speak honestly. You guard against being to naïve in which a lot of people don’t and others can walk all over them. Unfortunately a lot of people will take advantage of others they sense are too trusting. It is a fine balance. I will always be on guard for people who may take advantage of me. You stay strong and be just who are a wonderful human being. Lots of people wish they could do what you are doing but are too scared. You share your humanity with us and so many people are with you in struggles in life. Peace and love to you my virtual friend. Will look forward to your book. Fantastic idea!

I applied to volunteer at a local school. They did a background check and I never heard from them again. I had a stay of commitment over 20 years ago. I was never a danger to anyone, aside from myself. The stigma is still there, after all these years.

Hello Stephen, just thinking bc you love the ocean and swimming so much maybe you could join a swim club to meet others who love the water.
And if meeting people in person is too intimidating perhaps connecting on zoom with a few people would be a start.
Maybe there’s an online class on writing your autobiography.
You’ve got a compassionate personality. I’m sure people will be drawn to you. Just be yourself, respect your limitations and let people know you have some anxiety issues and are not always able to participate but once you reset you’ll be back.
You’re doing a great job with your channel. I don’t have schizophrenia and I could not do what you’re doing. So keep up the good work of destigmatizing mental health issues.

I relate to your experiences with depression and loneliness a lot. It's good that you openly talk about it because more often than not there's other people going through something similar, and it sort of lightens the burden to know that. I think you're on the right track even if it doesn't always feel like it :)

I completely understand buddy. I was a nurse before I became disabled. I have Asperger’s (autism) with PTSD, MDD, and GAD. I’m now disabled and I hate it. Everything I do is scrutinized. Once you get a diagnosis with any mental illness, it does indeed carry stigma. People assume it’s your illness and they won’t listen. I just turned 45 in September and I live in Georgia USA, but I will be your friend if you need someone to talk with. Be your best self. My name is Steven as well.

I also find your project of writing a book an excellent idea. As a mother of 15 years old dealing with mental illness, with no one to really share with my concerns and questions about it, it would be great to read your book. Also, some of my closest and most understanding friends are my cousins, so I’d encourage you to reconnect with your cousin who just reached out to you. Never too late to catch up and form a new friendship.

Hey Stephen, I stumbled on your video’s recently looking up stuff about anxiety and depression “, since I’ve been dealing with many similar issues as you and totally relate to everything you say, so it’s was reassuring to me I am not alone. I was surprised to see the areas you walk are the same areas I walk nearly every weekend just to clear my mind which has really helped me. I usually walk loops around Abalone Cove, Pt Vicente, Lunada Bay, around Paseo Del Mar and PV High, which I just finished. Hope to run into you some time on my Sat and Sun afternoon walks in the area and would love to chat and share experiences with you sometime . You are doing a great job and appreciate your honesty and candidness. You definitely helped me with just one video. Exercise and walks always improve my mood. Cheers and have a great weekend! Hey Stephen, nice to see you again. I've been mildly depressed myself lately, very little motivation, I guess if I could put it in gamer terms, it's like I have certain amount of "work energy", and boy does it get low when I'm depressed. Just brushing teeth at night or taking a bath becomes a challenge for me. Not to mention going outside or doing any chores. It comes and goes on occasions and it's just something I learned to live with. I'm glad your depression lifted after such a nice gesture from your cousin. You know, there's a reason why he/she wrote that they miss you, I'd put you in a category of people who make other people feel good when they are around them. You're radiating massive positivity and inspiration and I'm sure that's why people love to be around you, not just in real life, but over CZcams too. I'm thankful you got through covid safely, I think your depression was probably somewhat fueled by it. Don't know what else to add, best of luck for your book and TED talk, but don't stress over it, stress is horrible for us 1%, do give it a fair try I guess but if it gets stressful my advice is to skip it. Best wishes Stephen :)

You opening up in your videos makes me feel less alone thank you ! I don't have schizophrenia so I can't imagine what it must be like for you, I'm a 23yo boy from the other half of the world, I've been feeling low and struggling with my identity for the past 3 years, it affected all aspects of my life, I've stopped going to college, I isolated myself from my best friends, I didn't mean to... I love them to death and I'm planning to visit them soon, I'm slowly focusing on my art more and hopefully getting back to my studies, it's just hard my anxiety tells me that everyone hates me but I know it's not true I won't let it get the best of me, I feel so alone at times even when I'm around other people, and in that deep depsair and loneliness, there are some instances where for exemple the cashier or waiter would be nice to me, and somehow it would make my day, that's why being kind to other people is so important ! you never what someone might be dealing with, thank you once again for sharing your story !

Stephen, some times, I think you are too hard on yourself. You just had Covid. It is absolutely normal to feel totally depleted and empty. Physically your body has been through a lot, fighting infection. Everyone feels like that after being sick because our bodies are in survival mode. Constantly monitoring your feelings and emotions can become a source of stress in itself. I have OCD and can put myself into panic attack mode just by over thinking. I have strategies to keep unhelpful thoughts away. Deciding that I can take a day off from thinking, monitoring or problem solving has really helped. Sometimes it is alright to zone out and just be. Glad to see you walking around that sunny, beautiful place. I wish you would do a CZcams video with Chris from SBSK. He is awesome and has a couple special interviews with people with your condition. He has a huge following and connects people from all over the world. You are touching so many people with your story and you are loved!

I struggle where I live to find friends too just because I have trouble relating to people unless they experienced similar experiences. It’s interesting to say this but I feel so comfortable with the people that I have met at treatment centers or psychiatric hospital, just because they understand, they are less judgmental, it’s just a different connection I get. Do you watch the CZcams channel Living Well With Schizophrenia? The woman running that channel is super helpful & entertaining too…her & her husband (who doesn’t have schizophrenia) talk a lot about relationships between schizophrenic/non-schizophrenic partners & navigating the issues involved with that dynamic! Plus much more, including family life in general as they have 3 kids together. Just thought it might be a source of hope or guidance for the future for you regarding potential dating & beyond…

Hi mate, always look forward to your insight and friendly demeanour.
As someone who supports people living with complex mental health issues, your videos are wonderful resource.
This may have already been suggested, but Stepping Stone Club House can be a great place to recover and build networks.
I think you would be an inspirational peer support.

I know it can be hard, the only texts coming in are spam or what not. Having friends for a while, then not so much for a few months maybe years. Maybe people are starting to have babies or getting Better Jobs so they're working more, Maybe even moving away. That's what happened to me. I watched a lot of people that I cared about have families and then I became friends with New Waves the people over time. who I realize didn't care about anything that really mattered. Sometimes I have to remember that I'm first I am last and I am all the time. Maybe you can start something local at a park near you. Or in areas in your city or near you that have a mental health awareness culture and start advocating there. I hope you feel better soon. Definitely relatable. 🖤🧚🏽‍♂️

You may also be aware of another UTube Channel called
“Living Well with Schizophrenia “ which I follow and is very helpful like your channel. I have Bipolar Disorder and now live alone as my adult sons have left home and I am currently going through Menopause and navigating all of that. A specialised psychiatrist in mental illness for women with menopause would be great to find.
I am an excellent researcher and have great insight to my symptoms so this is just another stage to deal with.

Thank you.

You describe depression very well and If you have covid you're probably feeling a little low on energy anyway. All of these feeling are well within the scope of the average persons human experience. Given your diagnosis it's probably understandable that you experience depression. But more importantly the meds you take for schitzophrenia do interfere with your dopamine expression and dopamine is a pleasure hormone. What is notable is that you express your emotions and feeling well. Usually the negative symptoms of schitzophrenia mean a rather flat emotional affect. You seem quite emotionally connected and expressive and that's great.
If you like media and would like to work in the news area, have you considered further study. Maybe community collage would give you a better careeer oppertunites and certainly give you a chance to meet new people. I think for you education would be one of the best means of meeting new people. You're a smart guy and the last ten years probably has really interfeared with your education. Maybe now that you're more healthy and stable it's a goodf time to further your education and have some really good educational and social experiences.

There is a reason that the 1st Amendment of this Country is about Free Speech. I’m no being political. I’m talking about the underlying idea.
Speech IS the the structure of the world as we understand it. Through dialogue we think, and accept others thought. Then we speak on that.
So yes. As far as I can tell, to speak on the realities of living. Of thinking. Of experience. We can help to correct and build new ways. Or revitalize old ways. Thinking of the love and joy that helped inspire you to speak in this video. To take a walk. To live. Was just a letter from someone you care about. And who wanted to show they care about you.
Now I have a religious framework personally. That aids me personally in seeing where I want to be. I won’t speak of that, because it’s not really necessary to this. Only the consideration of it for the purpose of a few things that are universal. Love. Which is between people and is worth living for. Belief. Which is the consideration of what is true and acting on it. And hope. Whch is what can be done to see and prepare for the future.
As I understand it life and meaning is found in setting yourself to aim for what is good and true. And with your strength and focus aiming at it. The most important as your family has shown me, is love. It is the origin, or beginning of those others things. So start shooting I suppose is what I’m getting at. You’ve got the most important part.

I hope some day we can help more people with psychosis than we do now. It makes me sad to know how many people are dealing with this and no one even knows. Depression is biological probably, it's chemical imbalance maybe. Just don't take it personally if you don't have a connection. Lots of people don't have time for a social life in reality. It takes a lot to maintain relationships. Tbh I think loneliness is an epidemic. My son doesn't have a gf. Maybe he's introverted like me. Thanks for the nice view. 😊 (Maybe just have a good cry sometimes and release all the pain. I know, for me, I should do that more. It's hard for people to do that for some reason. We don't have time to schedule in a good weeping session. We're too busy trying to be happy all the time. 😂)

Stephen what does it look like if things worsened to the point you again struggled with schizophrenia?
I also woke from a schizophrenic coma, I feel like I had my second awakening one year after my original wakening. I’m also lonely though I’ve signed up to take standup comedy classes to help me learn to be more social and practice communicating.
Sounds like you do not want your mental health to deteriorate. What could you loose.
