I’m Experiencing a Schizophrenia Stress Episode

  • Hello, everyone. My name is Stephen. Today, I want to share with you a deeply personal experience - an insight into what it's like living with schizophrenia, particularly during a stress episode.
    The Onset of Stress
The day started ordinarily enough. I went with my dad to pick out our Christmas tree, a seemingly simple activity. However, on the way back, I was unexpectedly overwhelmed by anxiety and stress. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact trigger, but the experience was intense and disconcerting. This is often the nature of schizophrenia; stress can emerge without any apparent reason.
    Physical and Emotional Impact
Upon returning home, I was visibly shaken. My stress levels were high, my heart rate was up, and I even noticed myself physically shaking - a testament to how mental health struggles can manifest physically.
    Coping Mechanisms
In the face of this stress episode, I've learned the importance of self-care and recognizing my limits. My coping strategies include:
Taking Time for Myself: I find solace in solitude, allowing me to unwind and process my feelings without external pressures.
Informing My Support System: Communicating with my parents about my state is crucial. They understand when I need space and offer support when necessary.
Engaging in Relaxing Activities: Playing games, watching comedies, and enjoying shows like "The Andy Griffith Show" help distract and soothe my mind.
    Reflection and Understanding
As I reflected on the episode, I realized a couple of potential contributing factors. Skipping meals inadvertently (I hadn't eaten properly before we left for the tree) likely played a role, as hunger can affect my mood significantly. Additionally, the act of getting a Christmas tree, reminiscent of happier times before my illness, might have triggered emotional stress.
    Recovery and Self-Awareness
Post-episode, I took a hot shower and allowed myself time to relax, significantly improving my mood. However, I acknowledged the lingering effects: physical and mental exhaustion that might persist for days. It's a reminder of the importance of managing my energy and being patient with myself.
    The Therapeutic Power of Sharing
Interestingly, creating and sharing this video became a therapeutic process. Talking about my experience, even in a digital space, felt cathartic. It helped me process my feelings and, I hope, provided some insight for others into the reality of living with schizophrenia.
    Conclusion: A Continuous Journey
Living with schizophrenia is a continuous journey of managing symptoms, understanding triggers, and learning effective coping mechanisms. Episodes like these are challenging but reinforce the importance of self-awareness, self-care, and support.
I share my story to shed light on my personal experience and offer hope and understanding to others who might be going through similar struggles. Remember, you're not alone in this journey.
Thank you for watching, and I hope this offers some insight and solace. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy day, and I look forward to connecting with you in my next video. Stay strong, and keep surviving.
    Stephen

Stephen ... well done for sharing this.
I run a small project in the UK called 'its Okay 2 Say' who's simple message is to encourage people to talk about their wellbeing and, hopefully, better manage their mindsets.
We always talk about it being that first small step on the longer journey to 'being as good as you can be' in your own special circumstances.

I say this as a panentheist without any particular religion. Keep looking to stay calm and for composure, Stephen. Keep it simple as complications are for the chessboard. Peace :)

Thank you Stephen for sharing this. My loved one suffers from severe stress episodes (panic attacks)with her schizophrenia. Many times these episodes are so severe that she wants to go to the hospital because she thinks she is dying. Her hospital visits have always lead to a medication change which turns out as a good thing. I appreciate listening to how you cope because for her going to the hospital or calling 911 during her episodes are not always feasible. Describing what your symptoms are and what medication you take to alleviate your symptoms will also help me to understand more what the symptoms are and what medication might help my loved one. Thank you Stephen!

Hi Stephen, be not afraid, you are allowed to be stressed now and then. That fast heart beat must be a real pain. Luckily you have a routine to deal with it.
On a nice day sometimes its nice to put on an eye mask and lie on a blanket on the ground in a warm part of the garden ( not too warm). Feel the warm earth under you and the healing it provides. Feel the sunshine on your face. So relaxing.
Do your breathing exercise and perhaps pick a mantra to say. Something like, "chop wood, fetch water" or "Josh u ahhh" whatever. It's nice to do this even if not stressed.
Some people need to run to use up the excess adrenaline. Again whatever works.
    I admire your fortitude.
Maybe touch the Christmas tree and make peace with it. Feel its bark and soft pines, smell its lovely aroma and look up slowly through its branches to where it points and back down to the soft pines in your hand.. Look up the lyrics of the song " Oh. Christmas Tree" and think of these as you touch it. It's there to make our world more beautiful and to provide shelter to wildlife. We chose it at Christmas as a solid piece to gather round. It represent all that is possible with family and friends.
Thanks for sharing Stephen.I like the new haircut, very handsome.

I have really bad anxiety and I watch certain movies I find calming to wind down. Comedies don’t always do it. I watch “where did you go Bernadette?” A lot because i think it’s calming. I can’t explain it. But sometimes slower and serious works too. I’m BP and probably BPD. I’ve never been diagnosed with schizophrenia but I have family who have. So, I look to your videos for clues as to how I might be similar. Regardless, I just think you are a really brave and important person for mental health in general. Fan! Proud of you kiddo!

You said you are affected by all the complicated stresses and triggers of the holidays. It is hard on so many of us. Being aware of how you are feeling and working through it, is what you do! Relax. You've got this! Also, I wrote before that my loved one developed schizophrenia from a vitamin D deficiency. However, there are a ton of articles online about how gluten or food sensitivities can trigger schizophrenia. People also eat different foods around the holidays, combined with stress, can definitely make things worse. Also, my son is allergic to certain pine trees, molds and pollen. If he starts to feel stuffed up, it can turn into a full blown panic/asthma attack. He knows to use his puffer, down a bottle of room temp. water and wait for it to pass. Also, don't underestimate the power of water. Dehydration causes your heart to race which can start the stress triggers to kick in. My son finds his water/puffer routine really empowers him. If you haven't had your blood tested for food or other allergies, I would highly recommend it. Doctors often neglect looking into what triggers these kinds of episodes. You do great work Stephen. Be well! Also, love Andy Griffith! The old shows are simple and relaxing.

Hi Stephen! I hope you're feeling better. Being emotionally overwhelmed means to be completely submerged by your thoughts and emotions, to the point where you lack productivity and feel frozen or paralyzed. When you begin to feel overwhelmed, cortisol surges through your body and leaves you overloaded with intense emotion and anxiety. When you're emotionally overwhelmed try to take a deep breath, accept your feelings, be kind and don't blame yourself. Just remember that the feelings you’re having are temporary and they’re going to pass. Thanks for sharing your experience with us and take care!❤👍

I absolutely love what you stated accepting feelings. My nephew who is bipolar had an emotional episode a few days ago yelling about just wanting to be "normal." He's extremely intelligent and wired high during manic attacks. Those feelings go for all of us who have mental differences, or know someone who does. I love him tremendously and have educated myself on mental health. I will always be there for him.

Is that PTSD? Something about the whole Christmas tree shopping set it off. Could be the tree, the people random movement and noise around you or something. I was at a medical office for someone else the other day, I had to leave with tears because certain things set me off, including the wall it was too much the pattern/picture too big😂 It's something triggering you, not you going mad, so just run a deep bath to cover you, or close your door and cover your self with a blanket so you can get back to safety and reset xx

Take care Stephen, & if you need any extra ‘ talking ‘ support or being signposted, I’m UK qualified as a mental health nurse (full disclosure that I haven’t practiced/worked as one in years, but willing to offer freely if you ever need that kinda assistance. I say freely as I once offered advice & the person thought I would ‘ secretly ‘ extort payment from them, so just yeah, I just wanna help where I can, because I can, with a skill set I still retain). Bipolar myself too, so ‘ hyper-stimulation ‘ in environments I feel 💜🖤🧡

Thank you for sharing. You seemed to understand the process, and how to deal with it. I have experienced similar things, though obviously not to the same degree. Dealing with the big feelings associated with memories where the differences post illness and pre illness are obvious are fairly normal for anyone with illness. Especially childhood memories and illness. So that is totally understandable. Normal even. Illness is traumatic. Especially the kind you have.
But you developed a plan, took the focus off yourself, and showed others a little about a vulnerable time for you. Which is serving the purpose of education and discussion itself. Which seems to be a portion of the meaningful purpose you’ve crafted for yourself.
That’s actually probably a great outcome for two reasons. One is that it helps you to work through the problem, so you can get through to the next thing.
The second is that it means even in one of your most theoretically “unproductive” moments, which is a difficult monster for all chronic illnesses. That feeling like your illness is somehow taking away your worth. It’s not, but it feels like it. But here you are, doing something even in the middle of that, that helps to accomplish a meaningful task. Which is educating others and yourself on this thing that is not discussed, and tremendously painful and difficult.
On that last part, it doesn’t have to be a meaningful thing in the way people ordinarily think of them. It can be a painting. Folding laundry. Watching a show you think is good. Poetry. Or a video. Those are meaningful expressions if you find meaning in them.
The last thing I’d say is that even if you hadn’t, after you had your time, got back up. Not with any recklessness. But deliberately. When you had the strength. Which is progress. We all need progress.
On my days where everything is hard, I get up at least. Show up at least. Because wallowing in my pain tends to happen when I don’t. Which is a deadly habit.
Good luck man. This life is hard, but we are rooting for you, and appreciate the insight. Thank you.

Hi Stephen, I remember in a previous video your dad and you said you were going to go in for an Autism Evaluation. What you describe (to me) sounds like a Fight/Flight response of the nervous system that can come from over stimulation of the senses (seeing stuff, the amount of trees, people, decisions to make, etc..). Stephen I wish you well and recommend that you check out some research on autism spectrum condition.

I wonder if your blood sugar or metabolic health plays a roll in this? I have found that eating protein, healthy fats and whole foods keep me satiated and less stressed, than current ultra processed breakfast foods. I also can't eat wheat or gluten, so those foods are easy to exclude. They no longer hold any power over me. I also take some key supplements that tests have shown I am deficient in, that have helped me greatly.
